The deputy rings the bell and the killer woke up. He began screaming "Aaaaaaaaaaaahhh!" The deputy knew the killer was hiding in the belfry and continued ringing the bell. He knew it would summon the Sheriff and the townspeople.

@@Irunwithscissors63 Pat Hitchcock was probably miscast - but I didn't think she did a bad job. She successfully hid her very British accent, and registered fear pretty well. She studied at RADA, Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, so it wasn't as if she hadn't earned a spot in a little episode or two. She was also in Psycho in a very small role, and in a larger role in Strangers on a Train. Give her a break, she didn't have her looks going for her.

I am glad I am not the only one who knows that Bell would not kill him! I went to a one-room schoolhouse just like the one in the film, with a very similar bell on top, and the worst thing that would happen to a person if he was in the belfry would be a couple bruises to the head!!!

Seen this episode a few times. The one thing that always irked me, is how you can clearly see the bell's rim level with the top of the belfry enclosure (8:00) allowing it to swing freely, yet from the inside of the belfry (9:30), it's a half-foot lower, at his eye level, where it would hit him against the wall.

If the bell didn't hit him, it would certainly deafen him.

Got Nepotism? Patricia Hitchcock was on 10 different episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents from 1955 to 1960. That was her entire “television career” . Patricia Alma O’Connor (née Hitchcock) was married from 1952 to1994. She always used her maiden name Hitchcock, so is it nepotism or isn’t it nepotism? She was only in 6 films, 3 of them her father directed. “Stage Fright” 1950 as Chubby Bannister, “Strangers On a Train” 1951 as Barbara Morton and finally “Psycho” 1960 as Caroline. All bit parts. P.S. I don’t know which spelling error was more offensive “I ll”, “Git” or “To”? (I’ll, get and too) I hope she wasn’t his teacher.
