This was probably the only show that not just I, but also my mother, grandmother and her 100-plus year old grandmother could all watch and enjoy. I still love the memory of watching this all together and eating strawberry shortcake with my great Grandma Wonderful as I called her, while she apologized that she hadn't made the cakes from scratch. I'm so grateful to have those memories with her!

You can see how she totally transformed Hyacinth over the years. In the beginning, she was a lot more condescending, later, she was more acceptable but still acted with privilege. She was brilliant with this character.
@Normal1855
@Normal1855 4 года назад
I think she was figuring out her character. Most actors are like this at the beginning of a series. They have to fine tune their character. In real life, she, and the person playing Onslow, were best friends in real life. She was really hurt when he passed away. 😥
@triandiscrim558
@triandiscrim558 4 года назад
I think the scrips allowed her to transform over time. She had to deal with the different incidents involving her father, and with resistance, recognizing her son had some "unique tendencies", that he was gay (but she would never admit to it)! She remained "uppity" with her sisters, and drove her neighbors, minister, mailman, and everyone crazy! LOL from the states.

@@johnbell3621 true. For me, it was Pippa Haywood as Brittas's wife who carried the first series. Brilliant comic actress and had the best moment in the whole series. Britta's was critically ill in hospital with her at his bedside. A colleague arrived and extolled Gordon's virtues, stating that he was a good man. Pippa sighed, said "I suppose you're right" and plugged the life support machine back in.

This scene really had it all, summing up the entire series in just a couple of minutes, which is pretty remarkable. You've got the classic 'Bucket' trope, of course. But you also have the candlelight supper, how she intimidates Elizabeth, how she treats Richard, how she obsesses over 'breeding' and social standing, her sense of self-superiority, how she handles interactions with others like the postman, the reference to her rich sister and her father. So much packed into one scene.

Me too. My Gran late used to go to school with Patricia Routlage who was a year or two younger than my Gran. What people didn't see much of is that Patricia Routlage, in complete contrast to Hyacinth Bucket (I would call her Bucket & not Bouquet to irritate the heck out of her if she wasn't fictional), is so down to earth. She's also very talented, but doesn't brag about it. You can see her musical talent when Hyacinth plays the piano "out of tune", but still with the perfect major or minor key change to make it out of tune, but still with the "right" notes. That takes true musical talent. Being a musician, I can say that with complete truth. I think playing Hyacinth truly showcased as many of Patricia's talents as possible in a single role. I also enjoyed watching her in Hetty Wainthrop later on.

And the idea is just brilliant. A common housewife living and believing she was born to a higher social class and refusing to accept the reality of it all. Truly brilliant. And for once it's the men that are the sensible ones. You'd never find that in American shows. Men are always the dolts. I love how she saw her sister Violet as the epitome of upper class, but in reality Violet was dealing with a marriage from hell. I wish I could come up with such an original idea like this!

I first saw Clive Swift on Tv in "Barchester Chronicles" a series based on the Victorian era novels of Anthony Trollope.It's about the lives of Anglican clergymen in an English cathedral city.Swift played the part of a henpecked husband there too-almost the same role as Richard in "Keeping Up Appearances" except that the role was a lot more serious and the wife in it was a sinister piece of work.

the most brilliant was the complete denial Sheridan was living with his boyfriend, what mattered was that he was living with a friend of high standard. And of course Richard first reaction when Sheridan called home was: "How much?"

I read somewhere, perhaps Wikipedia, that Richard was not at all like the man who played him. Clive Owen was very much a lady's man. Patricia, on the other hand, MUST come across on some level as a bit overbearing as she has never been married. BTW, watch the movie To Sir With Love, Ms Routledge was in the original (1960s) movie and looking almost like what folks called an ingenue. She also is featured on several RU-vid videos.

@@howardkerr8174 Patricia Routledge has a very posh sounding voice in real life. Although she isn't as snobby or stuck up as her real life voice and Hyacinth voice come across. she has been known to give to charity. She didnt get married as she didnt want to.

She appeared in a Fig Newton commercial, I think it was, that ran on American tv a few years ago. You can also catch her in the British series Last Of The Summer Wine, she had a semi regular role for a year or two. She played a lonely librarian who was very interested in "hooking up", not necessarily getting married. The creator of Last was also the creator of Keeping up.

One of my favourite sayings to annoy her when customers came in the shop asking for her, was saying “ She is around the bend in the Bag Dept “ in a loud voice! It always got a result . Happy Days!
