For all its benefits, why is liberalism failing, and making so many people unhappy, asks Patrick Deneen? Liberalism failed because it has succeeded. Its liberation of the individual coincides with a sense of political and economic powerlessness for ordinary citizens. The rise of a populist reaction ought to be understood not as evidence of “anti-democracy”, but the legitimate evidence of the need to reconsider classical commendations of the “mixed regime” theory.

In my opinion it’s one of the greatest books ever written. The demise of the west is happening. It’s success will be it’s failure. I do go beyond Deneen and think it’s not even liberalism, but rather raising the faculty of “reason” to the highest degree.

@@ramon2008 Hello, Ramon! I am not sure if it is one of the greatest books ever written, but at least it is indeed informative and enlightening. I also agree that sadly, Western civilization is collapsing. Could you elaborate on this idea of raising the faculty of reason to the highest degree? Are you referring to the Enlightenment Era rationalism, sort of?

What could we begin to do right now to start to live out a post-liberal future? Deneen's book is an excellent diagnosis of the problem, but it offers little in the way of treatment, other than predicting a post-liberal future. But, as he says here, this is not destined. Which means not only that we should think hard about what kind of post-liberal future we want, but also that we need to take action to create it. We are free to create that future right now. I'm ready to start. Anybody else?

Start with the personal. In your own individual sphere (somewhat ironically) try to exercise temperance, control, and virtue - essentially self-governance. If you can cultivate that liberty within you, not be a slave to your desires, then you can move to act in your family, look to the remnants of community and rediscover what it means to live in a relational world defined by self-governance on a wider scale. To frame it as a cliché, be the change you wish to see in the world.
