That was my thought as well. Sabrina actually deserved the medal, but since the judges totally screwed everything up, a 3 way bronze would solve everything.

Yes, and the review process for inquiries should not be separate. The coaches should inquire about difficulty and penalties at the same time and not have to file them separately, and there should be a VAR system in place to determine out of bounds deductions that are too close to call.
Yes, if we have technology why not use it? I believe that a fair score is better than going fast and not taking time to review video footage. Judges are human too, so they should take a second look to award a just score. At least at this level of competition!
The medals are awarded by merits..Extremely rare in gymnastics to have identical score, which does not seem the case. Only one deserves bronze...and one should get it. What judges can do, for future, as it is not first time with disputes and appeals..is to be objective and to delay the awards, till they check angles on camera, as they do in other sports
Because there was not the same score. In gymnastics it is extremely rare for the gymnasts to get same score, having different programs, difficulty and executions..The score was different, so, only one gets a medal

It has been so frustrating watching mainstream media talk about Jordan Chiles getting the shaft while completely ignoring Sabrina, the true Bronze medalist of the floor routine. This is the first I have heard anyone even mention her since the actual event when they showed the replay.

If it's an individual competition, the previous gold and silver winner shouldn't be allowed to have more than 1 athlete in a country compete in the same event. Once they make it to the Olympics within the limits of how many athletes can comprise a team, those in the final should be those who scored highest in qualifying, not those who scored highest except the third athlete from one country, who is skipped over as a better scoring athlete on the day it matters for finals placement-quals-who is left out in favor of a lower scoring gymnast from another nation. There are sports that allow the podium to be comprised of athletes from one country. I also think a tie should be a tie-you get the same score, you get the same medal, because breaking the tie, especially using the e-score, which contains the most subjectivity, is ridiculous. In situation Ms like this, where judging incompetence and errors isn’t the fault of the athletes, per prior precedent, all should be given a medal in a three way tie, and those judges promptly removed and replaced from the panel. Also, if judges just used more technology and utilized slow motion and zoomed in video footage from all angles to determine every score to achieve better accuracy and not force countries to have to pay to have judging mistakes corrected. Just super scrutinize and score every routine that way and eliminate the majority of inquiries to start with!

I vehemently disagree. As an American spectator rooting for her team, I still say there were three distinct scores and only one winner of the bronze. However, the situation should be thoroughly investigated to determine the correct winner. This is the Olympics and there should be no participation medals awarded. I sympathize with Jordan Chiles, but she must accept defeat if it is determined that one of the other women has actually won. The same argument is brewing over the men's 100m and 100m hurdle races. Judges wrongly scored her. Appeal made, and they corrected her mistake. The Romanian gymnast who was in third should have been in fourth as they wrongly faulted the one for stepping out of bounds when she didn't. Appeal from Romania and without any proof, they changed their corrected ruling to a wrong one. USA appealed and showed evidence that the Romanian appeal was wrong and they say 'ah sorry we aren't capable of correcting a wrong ruling even when proving we are wrong' and now the result is that the 5th place gymnast is getting bronze. It was a competition, and Jordan lost. Everyone knew it. She knew her routine wasn't better. The US commentators were shocked she won. When US commentators who are Olympic gymnasts like Laurie Hernandez don't even believe you won and your score shouldn't have been higher, it's pretty clear she lost.

It is easier to find an excuse why they can't give Jordan the medal than make it more complicated and say, “We underscored Sabrina, and we shouldn't have given Jordan the point because she didn't complete it.” They would need to admit two mistakes. Instead, they are blaming one thing outside of the judges. If they were doing it correctly they would give the medal to Sabrina but they can't without admitting the judges scored incorrectly.
Well, according to the US team, there is video footage that is time stamped proving that the inquiry was made within the 1 minute time limit. So, if that video is produced, that evidence should be accepted. I think that the scores for each gymnast should be corrected and recalculated, and whoever has the highest score should get the medal. Unfortunately, it is the judges that made these errors and they should also be held accountable. From what I read, there is a sensor which is triggered when a gymnast steps out of bounds, so if that is the case, the other Romanian probably did go out of bounds but it might be difficult to see on the video of her performance. In any case, I feel sorry for all these gymnasts who have had to endure this situation, but to me, awarding all of them the medal doesn’t make sense because there is a way to determine the true winner by simply correcting the scores.

Sports where the outcome is based on points given by a jury should not be part of the Olympics. Go for sports with measurable metrics like time, weight, distance that can be compared between competitors.
I know most of the people here are supporters of JOrdan. And that is fine. But some of us really support all of these fine athletes. There are so man point of views. Someone said re judge the event and that appears to favor Sabrina. To be fair some say her foot somehow set off the sensors so that suggests maybe score wise Jordan would win. On the other hand looking at Jordan's elements the one where she got an additional .1 was not clearly done cleanly and arguably should not count or lowered in execution which would put her behind Sabrina and Ana most likely. I like a lot of people were so proud of Jordan and with her excitement of winning an individual bronze after the disappointment of the All Around. Her comments to some were a bit brash and seemed like she was gloating but she was very proud of her self and her accomplishment - give the girl some credit and a break. It may have been hard on Ana who had just lost the gold but such is life. I cringe when people say the medal should go to the rightful owner and then say Jordan. To be honest a lot of judges in the judicial system may be former colleagues or bosses i working for the Crown/District attorney and someone becomes a judge. The issue is can they use the legal parameters and apply the rules without being biased. Everyone may have a preference but can you separate it. That's one thing that comes out in the "tone" of a lot of these posts. They tend to favour a certain or one gymnast. I think Jordan has had some "bad luck" not being allowed to compete in the all around and now this. It is clear she has huge supporters and powerful names behind her. But there is good precedent with 2002 Salt Lake City where they gave out two gold medals. Neither should be penalized due to bad judging and likewise here.
They need to look into why these judges are making so many mistakes because I read somewhere that to put in a dispute. It cost like over hundreds of thousands of dollars for someone to dispute the judges score and I am wondering if it’s just the money grab on the judges part and they thought they were gonna get away with that shit and they didn’t becausepeople are streaming they can rewatch the footage. Yes, even if there is proof of Jordan's coach challenging the score at 47 seconds, they still won't consider it. Similarly, Sabrina’s video showing she did not step out of bounds, along with the difficulty score error, was also dismissed. My only hope after this unreasonable outcome is for significant changes in gymnastics evaluations going forward, to ensure that this never happens again.

During qualifications and her floor team final routine she received a score of 6 or 6.1 if I’m correct, while the individual floor routine was scored 5.9. And she had the exact same routine for all three events.

So until they release the video evidence it's a he said, she said type of thing. Apparently, Cecile Landi (Chiles's coach) requested the inquiry 47s after the score was posted but it was submitted officially at 1min4s (apparently). Barbosu did not submit an inquiry but Voinea did. She inquired her D-score but it wasn't the correct inquiry. It isn't very known but you can inquiry out of bounce deductions. What McEnroe's point is though is that the judges messed up badly and the athletes are getting punished. Had the judges properly judged the rountines Voinea would medal. Had they applied the rules and rejected Chiles's inquiry because it was late, it was Barbosu's. But since they deducted an OOB and accepted a late inquiry, Chiles ended up with the medal. In my honest opinion (as an american too), it should be Voinea's. But I agree that the damage is done and the only way to make this right is to give all three gymnasts the bronze.
I understand the challenge rule, don't like it but understand it. That being said, justice requires truth and truth demands justice, and the truth is Sabrina's floor exercise was the 3rd best floor exercise amd that is what should merit the brinze medal.

It should go to Jordan Chiles. The other gymnasts coach did not challenge this.... Which the challenge is the whole reason Jordan has to give her medal up. Jordan's coach did challenge in time and won that challenge for the move that was unfairly judged. If that's the rule we're going by, then Jordan Chiles deserves that medal. The triple bronze is an alternative, but if we're going by the rules they set, then Jordan Chiles earned that medal.

And here is where you are so wrong: Sabrina's coach DID challenge her score but the judges didn't give it any consideration and rejected it. Secondly, I am not one of the judges who scored them. Maybe tell them that. Third, from the video I saw...(and Sabrina's and Ana's video are really hard to find), it does look like Sabrina stepped out of bounds during a spin/movement of her foot from certain angles. It was mentioned by some that her team did challenge it and the judges upheld their decision. It's also stated that when Jordan Chiles review was done, they made a correction. I'll even note that the video I saw was just a performance, not whether there was a challenge or not afterwards. Keep in mind that none of us are the judges on this and throughout the history of the Olympics, there have been a number of questionable scores, ratings, calls, etc. Maybe Sabrina did step out of bounds. Maybe she didn't. That's up to the judges to review during the time they have to do so. What is known is that based on the rules that were set and in place for the gymnastics team after review of their performances by the judges, Jordan Chiles is the legitimate bronze medalist after all is said and done. You don't have to agree with me, but I am basing it off of the rating system that they made at the Olympics and their standards of judging. If we're going by that for all of the athletes, Jordan Chiles is the bronze medalist, and that's with no disrespect towards any of the amazing athletes that performed. And again, be respectful.

I don’t agree with his assessment. The point of matter is the party that challenged the scoring did so within the established rules. The with medals is not the athletes don’t deserve the bronze. The fact is that a challenge to a poor judgment resulted to award for the challenge which had been submitted on time. So, to come back to claim that the medal be returned, even though a video evidence proves that time requirements were met, is the issue and the troubling concern. US must fight this for credibility.

Except her DV score was supposed to be a 6.2 yet the judges scored her from a 5.9 which was incorrect and that’s what the Romanians were originally appealing but it was unfairly rejected when they appealed it the night of.
She never should have had the medal in the first place. They tried getting an all black podium and were caught rigging the competition, they gave the medal to the person who deserved it on MERIT. That is what is confusing people.

What??? This has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with incompetent judges that won't acknowledge their mistake. Did you watch that final? What exactly qualifies you to say which routine is adequate and which isn't? All 3 should get a medal. What's more, if the judges had done their job correctly then Jordan Chiles would have finished in 4th place. Do your research before commenting. This situation is more complicated than that.
That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard in Olympic medals. Jordan showed up with sass and little class, too loud for me. Loves Simone and Lee, but I’m happy to see Chiles tears. I need more tears.
Jordan has always been all sass and no class. She's always petty and insufferable. It's like she thinks that just because Simone is like her coach, she's just as good. People allow her to be petty just because she's black and female. It's what we call empowerment these days. I'm a female and black.
