Yep. Write for yourself first and derive what you will from that. As with anything creative, it doesn't have to make money or gain attention for it to be rewarding.

Variety _is_ the spice of life. Not straight, white, able-bodied, mentally healthy cisgender men... although they can be OK. They're kinda like carbs. You don't actually need hardly any, but you gotta admit, just having lots of them for all occasions is a really convenient and doable option in this economy. ...I'm gonna go eat a bag of mixed nuts.
@cameronstandifird8210
@cameronstandifird8210 2 года назад
The variety is very important, but making that variety feel genuine as also important. Inserting all varieties of people just for the sake of doing it isn't great. It's pretty easy to tell when somebody's pandering towards a particular audience, and it's generally much more offensive than helpful. Additionally, there's so many varieties of people it's very difficult to insert everything. If you insert a lesbian then a gay guy might want you to also have a gay character, you insert a black guy, then a Latin dude may feel that they want some representation, people are always going to want characters that are relatable to them, so there's no end to it. You probably need to insert a hundred people or more to include all the sexualities, races, and other sub+genres of people, like the disabled mentally or physically. Those who are vertically challenged as well. I digress, I do love how he handles most of these things though.

Thank you Mr. Rothfuss for your time and advice :) I can honestly say, your book came to me by pure and virgin like curiousity, literally seeing your book in the shop, not knowing anything about it or about you, and buying it because I fell in love with the title and the cover, as simple as that At first I was skeptical when I started reading although I was immediately captured by the first few chapters but then I worried it would be too similar to Harry Potter and the likes, but how wrong I was when I continued on reading and I literally swallowed your book whole in just a matter of days, and now I'm already half way through your second book and I'll surely be waiting eagerly for your third! If anything, you will leave me dreaming of the scenes and the characters and jealous coz I want to create such a world as well but oh Lord I'm sure that's not an easy task 😅 a bravo from a complete stranger, enjoying your story, knowing it deserves to be a movie(s) or series but even then, it wouldn't give your creativity justice! Thank you again for your work and world! God bless 😊🍒

Want to write? Write!!!! That’s like asking someone how to run a marathon. Are you supposed to go through a description of the physical act of running? No. You just do it. One does by doing. It’s like a Forrest Gump quote; simple and deep, both at once. To write, write. To write better, write more. To write even better, read when you aren’t writing. But above all else: get the friggin words down, dummy! You aren’t going to be Hemingway, but you (hopefully) won’t be on par with your friend misspelled FB posts. One word, then two. Then three. Keep going until the end. There ya go: the secret to writing!!!! Shhhhh! Don’t tell anyone! It’s a secret!

You got #1 of Heinlein’s Rules for Writers down Pat (Pun intended), but need to work on 2 thru 5. Robert A. Heinlein’s 5 Rules For Writers 1. You must write. 2. You must finish what you write. 3. You must refrain from rewriting, except to editorial order. 4. You must put the work on the market. 5. You must keep the work on the market until it is sold. Amateur writers often think the more you edit the better your work will become.

Name these other great Authors that wrote two books in a trilogy, then a side book to that trilogy, and is now telling all his fans to fuck off you get the third maybe when he gets around to it. I'm not a writer, but a passionate reader. I believe you can make supporting characters feel more omnipresent by affecting the protagonist in a certain way and feeling this affection throughout the story. One example from Pat's Books would be Kvothe killing the wrong Edema Ruh after leaving Ademre, doing somthing that Vashet or Shehyn propapably would dissaprove with. I thought:" What would Vashet think if she would see Kvothe now doing those horrible things". So she and the other Adem felt present without being mentioned. You maybe also thought of his parents, as the secret rules and signs of the Edema where mentioned. Or of the story he told Simmon and Wilem about choosing water over wine. You need to make it subtile yes and the wine story was on the border of being to obviously intended to to cause a flashback, but this kind of writing is what is setting a good story apart from a genius story, at least in my opinion.

I like to write as a hobby and it makes me happy doing it, but sometimes family members make snide comments like that is a waste of time unless you get it published otherwise your a bum not working. I have a job but only a few hours a weeks and I also care for two kids 11 and 13 years old. I really enjoy writing to express my creative and imaginative side of who I am, but each of those snide comments is like a dagger 🗡to my side and confidence. In the end I just don’t talk about my hobby and so I hide away my passion about books and writing as to not provide those likely to have a go at me about being a failure. I also get the comments why don’t you buy a computer and type up your stories. I just prefer handwriting them for some reason and they even have a go at me for that and say you will never go anywhere if you don’t type it up and get an agent, editor and publisher, but they don’t see I am happy just doing my hobby. I just like to hand write stories. I don’t tell them to stop doing or enjoying their hobbies if they don’t go professional like breeding dogs, baking, gardening or tinkering around the shed or garden. Your words provided great comfort and made a lot of sense in regards to hobby writers predicaments. I guess going pro is a choice and not all want to go down that path if it ruins their enjoyment of a hobby. I worked in a bookstore once and learned a valuable lesson one can love books and enjoy talking about them, but in long doses of time explaining them to others and attempting to sell them to customers it can ruin your love of books. You can get jaded very fast. I go to one of my favourite sayings now ‘too much of a good thing can end up being a bad thing’. Just think 🤔 on that a bit.

I also liked how you talked about BREVITY briefly lol. My old University lecturer now deceased tragically and sadly :( once just wrote on a paper I did a single word BREVITY! I got a high distinction but was over word count by a fair bit well I admit it a lot. He was kind to me that day and I never forget it, so I learned a valuable lesson often in life we think more is better but not always. Quality of substance and thought is way better than quantity full of rambling and something without structure. From one word BREVITY written on the bottom of my paper I learnt my most important life lesson get to the point fast and then get out!

If you wanna be a pro writer then understand that's 10 years away. Your goal for every chapter or book that you write is to write better the next time. Meaning the end goal for having written a book is you becoming a better writer not to have that book make money. Embarrassment is the cost of entry. You gotta just keep practicing. You'll notice within months your quality is increasing that will hopefully motivate you to continue honing your craft. Then in 10 or 20 years you would be a much more refined writer that will get 2nd looks by publishers.

Why did you bother publishing the first two books? You choose to put it in the public space and now are pissed at people because we want to know how it ends. Sure you could just write for yourself, print out a single copy and stick it own your own shelf. Done! Your problem is of your own making. You choose to publish the first two books and the companion book, implying you would finish the story. We are not being unreasonable expecting you to finish the third book in a reasonable time period. My (unsolicited) advice pick a draft of your book, the one you least hate, send it to a copy editor, then publish that, and be done with it.
