I honestly don't know what the hoopla is about Laine. He hasn't been good in ages. And newsflash... humans don't improve with age. Like, he's at his prime and he sucks. He's going to get even better PAST his prime? It's not impossible but few have done it and even fewer still who suffer from the mental and physical maladies Laine suffers from. He's a mess. As if he's suddenly just going to be dIfFeReNt. He also has a poor attitude, is lazy, focuses on his image and ego (which is especially uncouth when his play lacking) and at the mid point of his career, has demonstrated that he's not really willing to develop his defensive game. Basically, he is hot sh!t only when his team is doing well, his line is doing well, his ego is being fed, his mind is healthy and his body is aligned. What a nightmare. The only reason I'd take him as a GM is to flip him for picks.

As a Columbus fan, I think people are missing the point from our perspective. The main goal was to not retain any salary with Laine and we did that. Yes, we didn’t get anything substantial for him, but we had zero leverage. We’re not as tight to the cap as before and it gives Don Waddell a lot more flexibility to form the roster for the better.
@cheddarandsourcream
@cheddarandsourcream 23 дня назад
Agreed. Everyone saying “fleece” as if Laine didn’t publicly multiple times demand a trade. His trade value was non existent. Getting that cap out of there with 0 retention is a win, Jordan Harris is serviceable and a 2nd round pick is a crap shoot. Win win for both teams. Waddell has his work cut out for him still so we’ll see what else he feels the need to do in his first year to attempt to rebuild one of the most sad and pathetic franchises ever. Too bad Merzlikins is unmovable cause that’s another guy who needs to be out of that dressing room asap.

The trade makes sense for Columbus but Waddell still got fleeced. Maybe he had no choice but it doesn’t change reality.
@Beavie
@Beavie 23 дня назад
A fair bit of cap, but Montreal can probably find a way to make cap if needed. With two years, it is tradable if it doesn't work out, even if some retention is needed, but this can be a good position for Laine to reset mentally. Granted he is going in one of the most passionate hockey markets there is, but he's got young players to play alongside and he can probably be a solid guy in the top 6, assuming he is at 100%. As much as it'd stink for my Leafs if he rediscovers his game and does well on our division rivals, given everything he's been through the past couple seasons, I'm rooting for him personally to stay healthy mentally and physically and enjoy a fresh start.

@Jimbo7P 23 дня назад
As a Habs fan I like Jordan Harris, a lot. Probably more than the average Habs fan. Even then, I absolutely love this deal! We have too many young defencemen, especially on the left side, and Laine is only signed for 2 years so there's basically no risk. I mean there's 15M+ of Geoff Molson's money at risk if Laine ends up a bust, but I really don't care about that. I'll be keeping an eye out on Harris, I sincerely hope he becomes the player I envision. CBJ fans this is probably not feeling too good, but I honestly think you've got a real player in Harris.
@JaStargazer

I feel like it’s the first time in my existence as a young habs fan that I see an actual « superstar » ne traded to my favorite childhood team and even crazier that I learn that they traded him against Harris. A telented defensement that was just being there and not letting Xhekaj play. Now I can see Xhekaj play more often and PATRICK LAINE in the top 6 AND a second round pick where we could draft an other guy like Hutson who could possibly became our next Cale Makar. I’m living a dream.
@GeneralMcNugget
@GeneralMcNugget 23 дня назад
At one point Laine was on a path to become a superstar but he never was one. A star sure, a really good player definitely but never a superstar and now its in the past its highly unlikely he plays a major role in the top 6. Hutson IS NOT A MAKAR nor will he become one, you are living in a dream for sure.
@ZraM_tv
@ZraM_tv 23 дня назад
@@GeneralMcNugget you’re telling me that a player that *average 40 goals per seasons and is 26 years old, 6’5, with still the potential to enter in his prime won’t even make a big difference in a top 6 ? What’s the joke ? I can truly tell you he will be better than Armia at his position. Yeah he maybe isn’t a superstar, but the only thing that kept him from reaching that level is his health. And I don’t think he’s gonna directly be injured like every seasons. Look at Monahan. Nobody wanted him. He was just someone that kept being injured all the time. He played 82 game and was really really good with Montreal. We can believe in the possibility that he will have a really big season this year (If Dach and Newhook are not injured and play like they should be playing) since he is finally playing in a team better than Columbus and last time it happened. He scored 40 goals. I have my reasons to believe he’ll be good. And for Hutson. Only the future will tell. But so far, yeah I’m exaggerating by saying he’ll be a Makar. But HE DOES have the potential to become a superstar. He has a mixt of assets from great defenseman like Makar for some parts, other similar to Karlsson. But he as great talent. Not speaking about the points he put on his 2 NHL games but. When you look at the way he moves. His Hockey IQ, puck control, playmaking abilities. He’s gonna be great.
@GeneralMcNugget
@GeneralMcNugget 23 дня назад
@@ZraM_tv Patrik Laine averaging 40 goals a season??? Are you High??? He did it ONCE and never came close again in 9 seasons. using the average to get bigger numbers is a fancy way to give you hope but the fact is he never did reach his potential and probably never will. Hell Columbus GAVE mtl a second round just to get rid of him because they knew they couldnt get a better deal. What you think will happen is irrelevant when you consider facts. Laine will be a top 6 player but not a key contributor, Also you are spouting alot of nonsense about Armia and Monahan, Monahan was one of the premiers centers and an excellent TWF in the nhl for years, had a skillset that any team could find use and rarely something bad was said of him. Laine has already been on the player help program twice is a lazy player and do not play defense. the comparison is absolutely terrible. On hutson time will tell, everybody can tell his offensive prowess and iq will be off the charts, but on the 2 games he played he directly made the habs lose one there will be drawbacks top him, that being said sky is the limit.
@ZraM_tv
@ZraM_tv 23 дня назад
@@GeneralMcNugget On Monahan I don’t mean that he was bad coming to montreal. But teams were passinf offerts on him and telling Calgary that they weren’t interested because yes he was good but he was also aging and always injured. Calgary wouldn’t have given their 1rst round pick if they would have believed in him that he could be good again and restart playing more games. So they send him to Montreal where he proofed that he was still a really really good TWF and just really good player veteran that could bring a lot to the team. Well with Laine. Yes he only had ONE 40 goal season. But he also only had ONE full season. And even if he don’t even score 40 goals again. He can definitely (if he stays healthy) easily put 30-35 goals seasons with some assists there you have a 60-70 pts player on your second line. And with the help of Martin St-Louis I’m sure they’ll do nothing but improve him offensively and defensively. And I see the « lazy » thing as well with him but… I would wouldn’t be really happy as well if I knew I was a really promising potentially 50 goal scorer once and since I got traded started getting injured and played with a bunch of Pee-Wee player where all my goals needed to be incredible solo efforts because nobody can make the plays. I would have spend some time with the Player Safety Department as well. But coming to Montreal after multiple seasons with injuries and still putting up near a point per game. And arriving in Montreal, a team with a decent top 6, incredible coaching staff and trainers. And really talented and good teammates where he’ll get a lot of touches with the puck. He can bounce back to what he was or at least not too far from it. And improve his game. And for Hutson. I agree. Defensively he’s really not there but… After only 2 NHL games it’s hard to tell, obviously he’ll do mistakes. Take a look at Barron who since he arrived at Montreal pretty much only made mistakes in the defensive zone but I really think he will also improve defensively. We saw him playing really really good defensively during the World Juniors and his last NCAA season. A bit of time at Laval and even more hardwork (offensively as well) and he could really become a star.

And even if Laine is still a bust, at least we tried, and we made a little clean of the 7th and 8th defensemen in Montréal... And we have a 2nd round pick as compensation... A+ move by Hughes. I was ready to give back Anderson, a B- prospect, and a 2nd or 3rd round pick... But we pretty much have Laine for free... Bow down to Hughes!

I expected him to go to Utah, because Utah has all that cap space and wants to make a big splash in their first year in Utah. It seems like a strange trade for Montreal, I still don't know if they're a good enough team to make the playoffs. But they get a second round pick, so I guess it's still a good trade for them even if they don't make the playoffs either of the next two years.

Question for everyone? Does this push them to a competitive 80-95 point team? Top 6 looking sweet now. And if they can stay pretty healthy and Hutson plays well. I could see them being a 35+ win team.

So long we don't put our self in a 'Oilers' cap space OF issues. A couple of yr we got Xhekaj/Hudson/Roy and Dach.. I have a feeling Demidov (sooner than later) that have to be signed. Also Barron to consider. Yep we gonna lose salary too of course by then. Laine gonna be the next 'Monahan' project.. If he can play a full season and score 25+ and show chemistry with players.. its gonna a fun yr to watch the habs.. win or lose. Still would preferred Kakko.. but hey still early..

@purgedome2386
@purgedome2386 23 дня назад
More of a pat.. Hehe.. Laine's a project and so would be Kakko but one doesn't come with baggage and a 8.7 price tag and a quitting mentality or nomadic lifestyle. BUT If Laine can stay healthy.. an easy 1st rd from PO teams on his last yr.. though by then I rather get young NHL ready calibre prospect then a draft pick. Kakko would be age 25+ by then and we would know by then what we got. Laine plays a good Fortnite though.

Thought his contract was worse than just 2 yrs. Also thought the return would be more for columbus. Harris was very expendably and probably wouldn't have cracked the lineup once all the prospects have developed

i'd have traded a salary with harris. they may not have wanted anderson or gallagher, but the expiring dvorak contract could have been sent here. if laine doesn't work out this year, we have all three retention slots next year. harris is a solid bottom pair guy who plays a smart, unspectacular game and cbj will be glad to have him. i wish him luck. but, he was expendable here, and he just got expended. clears the way for struble to make the team.

Really like Harris but it was becoming obvious he was the odd man odd on the Canadien's D. Laine is high-risk but if he doesn't pan out they can cut ties after the season and they still have a high 2nd rounder.

As a Columbus fan we are breathing a sigh of relief that this is done. The second round pick is fine. Its the cost of doing business. Now once we move Elvis on or buy him out, we can move forward.

I don't know folks. Taking that entire contract of a high risk player seems a bit crazy for a team who has a ton of RFA coming up. Maybe it works out and I hope it does but not making CBJ do atleast 25% retention is actually ridiculous.

I know the habs arent gonna be bottom 3 in the NHL this year, but we're also not gonna be in the playoffs. In 2 years, once we renegotiate Laine's contract to a desirable amount, that's when the window of opportunity will be for the habs. Risk free transaction since I don't expect the habs to go ape shit at next year's free agency. We're just using our cap space.

As a Jackets fan, I'm REALLY not a fan of this one. I get the return. We're not retaining salary, there wasn't a market for him, he hasn't been healthy, and he publicly refused to play for the team anymore. But given where the Jackets are now and what the team needs, this is just a totally unacceptable. There's no reason he shouldn't have been able to play at least a portion of the season to prove he was healthy enough for a trade, and there's ZERO reason to not retain any salary whatsoever. We're a bottom-feeding team without a 2nd-rounder for the next two years who just got strong-armed by a player with no leverage and no room to be making these kinds of demands. Make him play through December, trade him half-retained to the highest bidder, and we probably at least get assets back. F***, man. That's so bad.

I think this is a win for the jackets laine is so lazy he’ll be fast with the puck when going to the o zone. But the back check is so dumb he doesn’t try that’s why he was traded out of Winnipeg he’s been benched a lot because of that he’s a good goal scorer and smart with the puck sometimes great goal scorer but lacks of back check is ugliest stuff I’ve ever seen. Love the content
