The Netflix show "Tiger King" brought plenty of attention to a still-growing problem of people trying to turn giant wild animals into pets. Lions, tigers and bears are still being bred, sold and abused across the globe. For the last four decades, Pat Craig has fought to protect the animals. Jeff Glor has more.

The contrast between this gentleman, his generousity and his big heart, and the titular character from Tiger King is simply mind-boggling

@@demetriuswillams972 I can't say that I met him, he was there one day and I saw him taking to some of the people, but I just listened and didn't bother him. He is so busy with the animals I didn't want to slow him down from what he was doing. At that time they were bringing in the animals from Puerto Rico Zoo.

Pat Craig is amazing. Give to him and his sanctuary... Tiger King is one greedy man among many worldwide, was so abusive and negligent, his entire sanctuary was rescued by Pat Craig from that horrible Okie Joe's horrid conditions of animal prison life in tiny cages, neurological damage, mental and physical abuse and life long malnourishment.

You need to do a segment on the other party shown in Tiger King. You need to do a segment on BIG CAT RESCUE in Tampa, FL. They are a GFAS accredited sanctuary and also have a premiere bobcat rehab program for FL bobcats. Joe Exotic profited from his use and abuse of big cats. Carole Baskin wants nothing more than to pass THE BIG CAT PUBLIC SAFETY ACT and put her sanctuary out of business! The House of Representatives has passed the bill. It is pending in the Senate (S1210) and is being held up by ONE person - Senator Lankford of Oklahoma.

Great story Jeff.. please know Pat Craig and the Wild Animal Sanctuary are not alone in this fight. Other reputable sanctuaries such as Turpentine Creek & The Wildcat Sanctuary have taken in big cats from Joe Exotic. What Pat failed to mention is the Big Cat Public Safety Act S1210 which is stalled in the Senate by Oklahoma Senator Lankford.. Oklahoma for crying out loud where Joe Exotic had his menagerie and in June where another shady facility abandoned some big cats and left them to die. Hugo Oklahoma is a cesspool known for being winter home for circus animals..

I wish we could care about more than 1 species than ourselves. Between this and the ground shaking technology being applied to food waste. Why can’t we do more for the other beings besides humans?

My own eery experience several years ago was in the Denver zoo. My son and I were just walking around. the animal parks and enjoying ourselves that fall afternoon. (At the ape house, the gorilla was angry. He would stare at the visitors there, passing by and .he was caged up.) The birds were just happy. One small green jeweled colored bird was out walking the pathways with us humans. The bird was free and the gorilla was angry. I felt badly for the weighty looking gorilla that day. Canadian wild geese were even flying into the beautiful lake park that evening and loved walking around! It had been Thanksgiving in Denver.

Damn so that right there is an issue that this causes right off the bat, going to 100+ Walmarts and buying what they have; it’s literally causing food shortages in areas (at least for meat eaters.) All these hunting safaris and stuff they have in Texas and stuff need to end, all this Joe Exotic type behavior too.

That wouldn't work for arboreal animals like orangutans, but it works so wonderfully for the land animals.

I need to get in contact with him because I know of two tigers and two brown bears that are in terrible condition in Quinlan Texas. The Tigers are being kept in small cage, surrounded by chain-link fence with no top and no shelter, the Bears are kept in a small pen about the same size as Joe exotic had, and the woman that has them has mental problems. She “rescues” horses that are starving from auctions, and when they end up dying, she feeds them to her tigers and bears. There are carcasses everywhere

Fun fact: After Joe Exotic went to jail, many of his tigers went to a MUCH better rescue, with huge wide open grassy fields they can roam, water areas to soak in and much better feed and care, and that does not breed cubs just for cub petting parties. The new bad amazing Colorado rescue area and the tigers themselves can be seen here on YT on 60 minutes..overtime. So Joe Exotic going into a small cage got his tigers out of a small cage.

If we follow the news today, we see a world about to collapse, as if we were experiencing the worst time ever. Therefore, we are able to believe that our grandparents were right, longing for "the good old days." Grim indicators abound-extreme heat waves and raging fires in Europe and the United States, America bleeding between one mass shooting and the next, inflation reaching historic highs to the point that recession seems likely, the unending Russian war in Ukraine continuing to cause shockwaves across the globe. Britain and Italy face political instability. Sri Lanka sank in front of people's eyes while its leaders fled the country. The quiet country of Japan saw the assassination of its former prime minister in the daylight. As shocking as everything looks, nothing has changed that much in the world. The main change has been in the accumulation of information and people's connections in the world. In past times we set out on walking tours to hear what was going on in the neighboring town and rocked inside a ship for two months to get to know a distant country. In later periods, we bought a ticket for a high-speed train or took planes to land on a distant continent to know other realities and people. Now without getting up from the chair and with the press of a key we are there, in the heart of the world. In less than a second, the entire colorful, noisy and bustling reality unfolds before us, stunning us with its growing influence. We hear and see, feel, admire and respond to everything that happens to everyone in every corner in real time. Communication between us requires us to absorb an intensive flow of information which we consume like addicts. How often does someone read a book and go to a friend to share, "Listen, what a good book I read!” We are in a world that is all news that we are not built to absorb, engagements that we are unable to tolerate. As a consequence, people are getting sicker physically and mentally. The endless bonds formed between us are cold, flat and alienated. They have no depth, warmth or identification. They lack sympathy and willingness to approach, and do not take into account that we are one. If the world seems full of crises, it is the ties between us that are broken. The physical bonds between us have become tight and fast, and so it should be, but we need to adjust ourselves internally and emotionally to it. We need to insert warmth within these bonds that will strengthen and connect us instead of breaking us apart. You can turn off the news a bit, open a purposeful book, talk to each other, and feel each other. Instead of running around with eyes on the monitor and absorbing fragmented pieces of information, we can get a real picture of reality when we look at creation as integral, knowing that it has direction and purpose. All of reality, past or present has a single purpose: to make us perceive that we are one, like nature, and to understand that only through our mutual guarantee and interdependence will we be able to overcome any hardship. When we achieve this perspective, the perception of the world that we see will finally come into a beautiful balance called peace.
