79 years old and still learning. I’ve made a lot of clothes for myself in my younger days but never, ever knew even half of what you taught in this video. Can’t thank you enough for such a great tutorial. By the way, your sweet, happy, disposition comes out in your face. Bless your heart. Keep your great videos coming and do stay well.
This is so needed for us newbies! I wish every pattern had a video walk thru. I’m a visual person and I’m often so confused by the instructions! It can be so frustrating!
RU-vid has some great algorithms! I got on here to search for this video you mentioned in another tutorial and it was the first video that popped up when I opened RU-vid!
Hallelujah! I needed this information 50 years ago when I was learning to make clothes for myself and my little girls who are now 52 and 54. HA! So much I never knew. Thank you sweet sister in the Lord.
Thank you so much for doing this series. I teach beginners sewing and my first 2 classes are these discussions. It is amazing how many sewing classes do not include these discussions! I get students all of the time that say they took a class at a store, etc. and no one ever taught them how to read a pattern so the item they made turned out alright, but they felt clueless to make something on their own because they didn't know how to make sense of the patterns they liked. I was surprised to hear that you began sewing in 2014 and were self taught. You are amazing in your sewing and fearless in taking on all types of garments. Congratulations to you on your journey and thank you for offering blessings at the end of each video. We all need them, especially now!! Thanks again.
Hi Brittany I am 53 years I am teaching myself how to sew, about 3 years ago I was about 220 I am only 5'3'' After being diagnosed with diabetes, I started losing weight, then I got H-pylori than Achalasia, it went undiagnosed for almost a year crazy right I went down to 119 pounds finally diagnosed and treated, yes I have been watching a lot of you videos YES I saw your health issues as well. Anyway, food and weight have been a problem for me most of my life I truly thank God for my husband who loves me no matter what weight I am. I have the body type of a young boy lol. I had decided to take in all my clothes that did not fit, then I thought why not sew clothes just for your me my body. I brought a singer simple off FB and I want to thank you so much for your videos, I have so much to learn but with your peaceful smile, I THINK I CAN DO IT. Also Thank you and your family for your service to our country keeping us safe. I have so many questions thank you for your sewing tour I have a lot to learn.
I hadn’t sewn for years, and had my first project cut out to a size 22 (or I should say, I had the bodice pieces cut out on an old bed-sheet to do a trial run before using my expensive and beautiful fabric), according to measurements on the back of the packet. But after this video, with your instructions to use “finished garment measurements,” I went back and re-cut it into a 16 (my finished garment measurements were actually a size 14, but 16 was the smallest size of the pattern I’d bought), AND IT FIT PERFECTLY! So the skirt pieces I was worried about my hips, I cut out in a size 22, but marked the sewing lines in a 16. It fit perfectly in the waist, but snug on the hips, so drew in the size 18 lines for hip downwards, merging to size 16 at the waist. IT WAS A PERFECT FIT. So then I was so excited to then cut out my beautiful fabric, and had the confidence of fit. I’m so happy how my dress turned out!! I owe this video so much, thanking you, for helping me to get back into sewing again😘😘I cannot wait to start more projects!
I just sewed McCall’s 8035 and your sew-along video helped so much. I’m inspired knowing that you taught yourself and make such lovely garments! Blessings to you and your family 💕
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for this video! I purchased a sewing machine and tools in February and started sewing in March of this year. I'm teaching myself so blogs and RU-vid University are my go to for help. Blessings
I’ve been sewing for so many years ....I don’t even want to say how long. You did an excellent job of explaining the sizing and the info on the envelope! The finished garment measurements are the best way to decide on the size to make for sure!
👋 Brittany. Oh my lord the finish garment size. A complete game changer Thank you 😊. See you next post looking forward to it. Blessings to you and family too.🙏
Oh my god THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!! There are things in this video you have explained that no one else has and I appreciate you so so much for that! Thank you for not missing out the little things and explaining everything in such a clear way! ❤️
Thanks for a very informative video, Brittany! With the retail cost of the big 4 increasing, and the number of pattern sales decreasing, I'd like to mention the little cousin of the big 4; New Look patterns. Not as many views and options to choose from in each, but generally one envelope carries all the sizes, and they are $4.99, every day at your craft store.
You are so fun to listen to and learn from! Do you do speaking for your profession? You really do a great job. Thank you, I am looking forward to (finally) learn how to use a pattern! Sewing for 20 years and can't do yet! I am going to change that, with your help!
Thank you, You just don't know how many of us you are helping get over our fears. You are such a great teacher and have definitely mastered sewing quickly and extremely well thanks for not forgetting the beginners ;-))
Thank you so much Brittany -- It is so hard to learn how to sew and you have an awesome talent for knowing and understanding that a beginner sewer is exactly that, and most of us beginners need details and lots of them. Thank YOU so very much, for your time and your talent!!! You will see me here quite often. I am 66 and have never sewed. It is something I want to do. So now I believe I can and will learn how to make clothes for myself. I am 6 feet tall and believe me, I need to learn. God Bless and Thank YOU once again!!!
So good!! I am a "seasoned" (ie not "old", LOL) seamstress and yet, still learned new things. And it's always good to get a refresher on the basics. Great info on ease. As always, you are beautiful, inside and out, and you brighten my day. Thank you so much!!
Brittany, thank you for sharing this information. I’m in my 60’s and have sewn all my life. When I was younger,I wore a 14 I bought a 14 size pattern and cut out a size 14 without blinking and it fit. After marrying and having kids I wasn’t able to sew much at all so getting back into it I saw how the Big 4 changed the patterns and it freaked me out. I did a lot of adjustments and couldn’t figure out what and why the patterns changed so much. My sister and I discussed this and she figured we needed to take the finished garment measurements into account. It was still a little confusing to me until I watched this video. Wow!!!!!! Thank you so much. Your explanation turned on that light bulb for me. I’ve been subscribing and watching your videos for quite a while and your fantastic. Thank you again.
Hi Brittany. Is there anyway you can do a video on how to layout your pattern pieces on a single layer fabric? I don’t know when the pattern piece should be printed side up or down, flipped or not, etc. I see sewers cutting on single layer but no how-to videos on it. Thanks
Thank you for making this video. I've made a few items as a new sewist using the measurements from the flap and they were huge so yes, look at the finished measurements! Great tip!
I’m teaching myself to sew, this is the first video I picked and I’m so grateful that it was!! Ms. Jones is very helpful and kind, I can’t wait to check out the rest of the channel 😊
My goodness! What a gem! Thank you for your many gifts and contributions to newbies like me who have decided to learn to sew. My grandmother was a seamstress and my grandfather was involved in leather making. Perhaps I am feeling sentimental, but at 55 I've decided to seriously consider working on a new hobby! I've been losing my hearing and have tinnitus...so I have given up on my horn playing. Thus, sewing has won out for a new hobby for me! (I hope my grandmother would be pleased!) In the past couple months, I've been reading various materials and watching plenty of videos. I have gathered many sewing materials and got a sewing machine for Xmas. I don't feel inclined to make dresses and such, although I might for my mother-in-law. Still, I found your instructional videos to reveal many techniques that I will inevitably use in whatever other projects I will do. I'm in the process of preparing for my first project - a tote bag. All the same, I just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed watching your videos. I'm feeling much more comfortable now that I have watched this four part video on reading and using patterns. Thank you so much!
Hello Brittany, I just watched your video and I found it very informative. One thing you didn't cover on the envelope is "with nap and without nap". I've wondered about this for along time. Can you explain with this is? Thank you.
Thanks so much for your video. It’s hard to find someone to explain the back of pattern envelopes as slow and concise as you’ve explained. And it didn’t take an hour. LOL.
Thank you for this video! I've only been sewing since February but figured I'd watch your whole series since I can still learn more about the basics! Looking forward to watching the rest of the series!
You are such a good teacher, Brittany----I've been watching quite a few of your videos over the past few weeks. I've already learned some new things from you in this video. I really appreciate it and your lovely, sweet demeanor. God bless you.
Good information! I have a few patterns that I purchased the wrong size, because I didn’t know about the finished garment measurements. Have a great day!
Hello Brittany!! Thank you for that very informative video. I am new to your channel and also new to sewing and wondering if you could show how to alter patterns when you cut the fabric in your part 3 video. I am 5'8 and most bottom clothing pieces are too short for me. Thanks!
First...your hair looks great! I love it! Also, thanks for a great video, I am a new subscriber but so look forward to your videos. I’ve learned so much from you already and love your spirit!
I had no idea that the width of the fabric meant the total width when the fabric is opened up. That was awesome information. Thanks, Brittany, no one ever tells you those pearls of wisdom. I got you on the ease, but I'm wondering how much ease is good. For instance, you went with a medium. How did you know the ease was what you wanted?
Thank you so much Brittany, I’m not a beginner, but it doesn’t hurt, to go over this a few times, just to reacquaint yourself with the pattern too. I’m looking forward to the next update to see where you are going with this pattern pieces and the instructions too. Please stay safe and well too, xxx Mags.
Honestly, the first time I grabbed a pattern and looked at it I felt exactly the same way I felt in high school, when I flipped through my 1st algebra textbook, lol. Thank you for putting up this video. Moving on to Part 2. ♥
Thank you! I will be sure to pay attention to the finished garment measurements. Your Awesome!!! I know you are proud of yourself you have come so far for a self taught sewist. God Bless.
Another great video!! Tha ks so much for sharing your knowledge. I'm a beginner sewer and just when I'm about to give up (because nothing I make fits) you inspire me to keep going. Many blessings to you.
Keep at it, take it from me your skills improve with every project. I had not sewn in over 30 years and decided to get back into sewing. I started with a class in my area and the ladies encouraged me to keep going. Next I went to RU-vid and found Brittany Jones, mimi g, and Anita by Design. I watch and learn and comment and they respond with valuable feedback for the subscriber. Small projects gave me confidence. Keep stitching.
Hi Brittany! I really like this type of video! Please consider doing more like this. As for the makes, they are outstanding! Thank you for sharing. I believe my favorite is the mustard dress. I also like the jacket, and the Sydni shirt dress, and the Mimi G dress. I guess I like everything! lol
When you get to cutting out patterns would you also include the best way to transfer markings. I find it difficult to transfer dots and darts and such. Blessings to you!
Love your channel Brittany. Thanks for explaining how to read a pattern. Looking forward to part 2. I feel l can sew it's just the whole pattern fitting body which is hard for me and also trying to figure out shoulder angles.
Hello, just found your channel and I’ve literally learned more about how to sew clothes than anywhere else 🎉. I do have a question and maybe I missed it. How will I know how much fabric I need or how many yards of fabric based on the size chosen on the back of pattern pack.
I wish I knew about the sizing and measurements, went and bought a whole bunch of McCall's and all the patterns are all to small.. now i gotta cut into the patterns to add space .. thanks for sharing.. you look great
Will you please consider doing a sew-a-long for McCalls M7604? I'm brand new to sewing. The McCalls RU-vid channel says this is a great pattern to start with, but I can't find a sew-a-long for it. I'm a little nervous to start & having someone walk through the steps of a first project as I go along would be great! (Your hair is beautiful!)
Thanks Brittany for another great video I have been taking sewing lessons for three years I really love it .can you do a video about reading a ruler, and seam gauge have a blessed day
Thanks for the reminder to measure yourself and check the size. I just realized I bought a MISSES pattern!!! Good to know I won't be fitting into this *laughing crying*
You know what's funny? I've been watching you for a while now and just realized you didn't do a "pattern reading" video.....well thanks for this one also!
Thank you Brittany. very informative! I am always eager to learn More about sewing. Also if possible could you zoom in a little closer when you discuss pattern measurements.
