The Lion Butterfly is a rather discrete fly in the deadly yellow lion colours. It’s tied with our brand new Butterfly tying technique. It’s a great moving fly - translucent with the important characteristics from the fish's point of view. We really like this mobile design and we fish it on slightly coloured to clear waters. The Lion likes the sun, with a bit humus colours to blend into the shades. This is a new exciting favourite of ours - hopefully it will become one of your favourites too!
If you want to tie or fish your own Lion Butterflies, we offer you customized packs with fly tying materials and ready flies. Buy one-time packs, or better-join the subscription and get the packs delivered to you automatically every month at a beneficial price.

Thank you very much for explaining the proportions of the fly in the video, I now understand how to build the bodies and work out the dimensions of each part of the tying. Many thanks for the knowledge you provide in your videos and for sharing this awesome design. Chris Efstratiou.

love your flies and I think the new butterflies will do good! The first fish caught this season was on one of my favorite flies, the sillen, and it was the butterfly one. Awesome work :)

PART # 2 : I also use Plugs, & a challenging method called "Drift-Fishing". With this method, we use a Small piece of Yarn under a special knot (We call egg loop), but if a Float is used even a young kid can catch them. We bounce the Weight along the river bottom about every 25 cm. The weight is made with Parachute Cord filled with B.B. size "bird-shots" & burn the ends with a Lighter. We call this a Slinky!! The advantage of a Slinky over long sections of hollow lead is that it doesn't get caught in rocks on the bottom of the river. The Steelhead we fish for is an anadromous Rainbow trout. Unlike All 5 Pacific species of Salmon (which die after spawning), Steelhead don't necessarily die. If after spawning they are still in good condition, they can go back to the ocean, stay a couple of year or so & come back into the river.

Frödin talking down on Blacker's work, it's like if One Direction was talking down on Led Zeppelin... Don't forget those who laid the foundation of what you are doing. I mean, I get what he meant, but I have taken my majority of salmons on Victorian style salmonflies, tied the correct fashion of course, not tied with a big, tall and stiff leaf-wing, but lower and more chaotic wing as they more often were tied back then. Anyway, it would be really cool to see a video where Michael talks about Victorian salmon flies, and maybe show us a few from his private collection of antique salmon flies. Maybe even go through his old wooden Farlows box.

Please I was not talking down Blacker... and never will! He is one of my great tying heros. Just saying that the art of tying the salmon fly has changed into what i think is more effective flies.

@@frodinflies I was mostly joking about the Blacker remark you made, and I know you are well read on the history of salmon fly tying. I agree with you that the development has led to more effective flies, but personally I've found some of the old feather wings to be quite deadly when tied correctly. The problem is sourcing all those rare materials to traditional flies, so the use in modern flies of more available materials from less endangered creatures is something to be appreciated.

PART # 1 : Come to Oregon, and I'll show you how to catch Chinook (King Salmon)!! Very few people catch them on Flies, but I'm like the late Lee Wolf. What I mean is that, I'm not a Snob :-)>- !! Even-though I Caught the World Record Steelhead by fly fishing with a 10 Weight Sage "blank" -which I crafted myself into a beautiful fly rod!! Sometimes I bait-fish with such live-bait as Sand-Shrimp (some fishermen catch their own on the Ocean beaches), or Salmon/Steelhead roe (from State or Federal Fish Hatcheries) and even lures like Mepps Spinners.

"false hackle" is what i learned to call it in the start 90's esp. on shrimp mouth parts or feather underwings for small wetflies. for danish trout.
@frodinflies
@frodinflies 4 года назад
well iw ould say a flase hackle is a bit different from this... loose fibres mostly and not the whole feather..

@@frodinflies we had some shrimp patters where we used the full stem without the tip as the back shell ribed and brushed down as legs and in front as antenas might have been mallard. latest i did is was on some cdc shrimp done as above.as for wetflies father/i made some red cardinal's "various colours" in # 4 and 6. but i get your point i actually never did what you have done here to broaden the profile of a flie /kind regards.

@@christiannilsson4071 yheee... seen those shrimps great way to do it... rib down the feather makes it strong! These feathers are so thick they do good without the ribbing... love to see some more of this!

Hey Michael can you also spin the fibers in a dubbing loop?
@frodinflies
@frodinflies 3 года назад
Hi, if you mean the dubbing so yes ofcourse... if you mean the ostrich so no, the broad profile comes from them being on the feather.

Hello, May I ask you a question,Have you visited the Norwegian Salmon Factory and found some sick fish? Because someone in China used your video and put it on the TikTok. They said sick fish come from Norway and maybe causes the spread of new coronavirus. I just want to know the truth. in video you photographed sick fish in fish factory, is it in Norway? I really need to know. Thank you so much! I am looking forward to your answer.
@frodinflies

I cant tell you anything about the spreading virus to human population - but yes i did film the Norwegian fish farming industri and yes the fish are sick.. many of them.. last year 53 milion salmon died in Norwegian fish farms. The industri is devastating for the wild salmon and the ecosystems in both fjords and rivers, Please have a look at the film Artifishal at the Patagonia RU-vid.

There seems to be no end to the range of flies that will take Atlantic salmon. It seems that you can catch it even on a cigarette butt if you are in the right place at the right time and able to make the right presentation - the rest is just advertising!
@frodinflies
@frodinflies 4 года назад
...well - thats a pretty boring approach to the art of catching Atlantic Salmon on a fly.
@flyfishinghome3792
@flyfishinghome3792 4 года назад
@@frodinflies For all the variety of feelings that we experience in the pursuit of our passion, the adjective “boring” does not take place. And yet, it would become really boring if it were easily achievable, and if it were easily achievable, it would destroy the art of catching Atlantic salmon! Fortunately, this is not possible! With all due respect...
