How lovely to be able to join you on your deck on a warm day whilst it is pouring with rain here in the UK. Loved seeing your yarn choices. The farm looks so green. The potato fields are blooming well and they contrast well with the rich red soil. 🇬🇧
Thank you for another lovely episode. I was watching in my sunroom and there was slight breeze blowing just as there was one at your house. For a few seconds, it was an odd feeling seeing the trees move on my screen and outside my house. I love the cowl pattern. Also, the potato plants reminded me of growing up on my grandparents’ farm in Virginia (USA). As a child, I thought the flowers were beautiful and spent many hours picking up potatoes. The harmony song was lovely as well. Happy knitting!
Dear Kim, So very glad I signed on to listen; I just registered for the Rowan event; I look forward to it so much. THANK YOU ! I hope you all find respite from the heat. Nice to see you relaxing outdoors. xoxo
Always a great Friday to see a new episode - ❤thank you for all the lovely ideas, inspiration, and beauty you share with all of us each episode. I couldn’t resist Simone’s new pattern - so now I get to try your luscious yarn too!! Who knew the potato fields could be so beautiful! Diva’s such a treat to watch - glad she’s hanging on and healthy.
I love your podcast. I’ve been watching since it started. I think it’s fantastic when you engage with Betsy and Simone. I hope you can do a little more with the spinning. Keep up the great job.
What a FUN episode!! Loved the scenery with you all sitting outside.... loved the shawl and ornament reviews, the book reviews, everything! I enthusiastically look forward to drinking my morning coffee, knitting, and watching you every time a new episode goes live! May I recommend the book, Life in 5 Senses to you! I'm enjoying it with a book club this summer! Such a beautiful harmony section with the potato plants in bloom! Thanks for sharing :)
Great episode. Thanks for the pattern suggestions Simone. I love watching and learning about colour combinations - something I struggle with. Great spinning for TDF the both of you. I love books and enjoyed what you had to share. LOVED Pillars of the Earth series. Love historical fiction and non fiction too Kim.
It's no surprise Simone was instantly drawn to the light blue/purple combination, as she designed her Solstice Toque in Blue Poppy and Amethyst Brooch a few years back. When I saw the beautiful cowl, something rang in my mind. I went back to the earlier episodes, and there it was in Episode 3 (16:55). Jennifer, Kim's sister, dons it for a few moments. She really enjoyed knitting the hat and went to say how much she loves Simone's designs. Both of you marveled over how well the two colours work together, and they are, in fact, absolutely gorgeous. How interesting that they have paired together for Simone's beautiful cowl. I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer at the Knitters Frolic in Toronto in May 2019, and that's where I also saw the Solstice Toque "in the flesh". Not too long ago I ordered the yarn to knit that exact pattern. Simone's cowl was just one of the many highlights of this podcast. You both did a great job, considering you were both "left unsupervised" (LOL), and managed to improve the podcast even more by introducing books - BOOKS! Yay! Despite the heat and the mosquitoes "the size of helicopters" (lol), you put together yet another inspiring and engaging podcast. Thank you so much!! 💖💖
It looks so beautiful outside up there in the north! I'm very partial to fingering and lace yarns. I like the delicacy and, living in Florida, anything heavier is just too much! And I'm partial to reds and purples, so some of your colors just make me drool.
I've just read your message announcing Diva's passing. I can only imagine the emotions you and Ken went through. She died in peace, happy and content, having spent these last years in your loving care. I know she will be dearly missed. ♥
I really enjoyed the sharing about books. I decided to get The Pillars of the Earth on audible. I like listening to a book when I knit. I feel that the book segment fit in nicely with the knitting. I also enjoyed the conversational flow of the show today. Kim
The English paper piecing quilting thing sounds like the craft that Arne & Carlos are doing with embroidered napkins and tablecloths they have collected from thrift stores.
Love the outdoor podcast today. The potato fields remind me of my childhood. We always grew a crop of potatoes to store for winter. I remember a cousin coming to visit from the city. My grandmother asked us if we would get her some new potatoes for dinner and my cousin couldn’t find any. She was looking on the vines…😂
Love seeing all the beauty, knitted and natural. We're enjoying beautiful potato fields around here (Vancouver, BC) right now, too. Love Simone's new cowl, too. My wish list for F&H yarn just gets longer...
I always enjoy and look forward to your podcasts. I think Simone's Lanfear cowl would make a great double knit pattern. Tuning in from rural Tennessee.
Great podcast.....I registered for the Festival Week.....love the blanket. you mentioned that you are reading the Ken Follet series....great books. The reader on Audible is amazing....really brings the characters to life
What a beautiful potato field and all those flowers! How wonderful that you mentioned Kate from The Last Home House. I subscribe to her podcast. English paper piecing can be as meditative as knitting and thankfully one can make a small table mats instead of a whole quilt. Check out Kate's quilt for her granddaughter Agnes - all Kaffe Fassett fabrics and just a jewel! The bright colors like Tea Rose AP and Sprout sing in the quilt. Love 😍the new cowl and all the knitting goodness. Thank you from Michigan for an inspiring podcast in spite of the heat - nice filming setting. 🧶Safe travels home to Betsy.
Great episode as usual! I laughed out loud at your comment about not having enough “band width” to read more than one book at a time. That’s the way I feel most days!
Felt like I was sitting on your deck with you and Simone. What a beautiful spot even tho it was stinking’ hot! As always, I loved seeing pics of the animals.❤
Thanks for a nice episode, I'm making my first steek, cardigan and buttonholes.....procrastinating on the latter. Your WW1 book mention reminded me of something. There is a movie on RU-vid called Tell Them of Us that features lots of vintage knits and I think you would enjoy it. I found it through a feature Roxanne Richardson mentioned, about the lady who made the knitted costume pieces, also a nice video.
Wonderful episode!!! So much great content. Glad to hear things are running smoothly on the farm these days. We’ve had so much fog in NB were all mildewing over here 😂 Thank you for the eldon lace info, I’d really like to try it soon, also the book recommendations. PS- congrats Simone on the cowl pattern, it’s beautiful & I dig the 🌒⭐️ In my cue / basket
Another lovely show! When you talked about Emm chewing up you yarn, I had to laugh. I rescued a greyhound last October, and if I don't keep my room door closed where I have all of my yarn, he tears up my yarn. I never had a dog that loves yarn like he does!! You always inspire me! have a great two weeks.
I am currently working on a project from Nancy Marchant’s book on tuck stitch. In it she calls brioche a single tuck stitch so Simone is correct. The book describes and has a stitch dictionary for single, double, triple and quadruple tuck stitch. Each one a an additional yarn over. On the following row the stitch is knit together with 1, 2, 3 or 4 yarn overs to make the tuck stitch.
Great episode Kim, Simone and Ken, I am so bummed out that I can not make th PEI Fibre fest this year. Wishing everyone a great time...maybe next year.🥰, Sharon.
So nice to see you outside ! I get a mental picture of you covered in rabbit fur on a HOT summer day 😂Is that what you call a Kim bunny ? I can so much understand not combing the rabbits too much in that humid weather... The Treit in Point Prim and mohair in blue will be so wonderful. I think you fit strategy should work, if you have to unravel, you can put your knitting in the freezer first, it helps a lot when unraveling mohair. Thanks Simone for that lovely Lanfear cowl, it is magical. Just bought it. There is also another free pattern that is gorgeous in Eldon lace, "Wild Swan" by Anne-Lise Maigaard & Nim Teasdale, it has a ravelry thread from 2019 with lots of great info. I knitted one with 1.33 skeins of Eldon Lace in November Sky color. Do the potato flower smell ? Were all the potatoes harvested before Fiona last year ?
Thanks for the tip about the mohair in the freezer. I don't think I will need it though. I think my strategy is working. I don't think the potato blossoms do smell. I will h ave to go visit the field and see. Yes Fiona didn't really affect the potato harvest last year - luckily for the farmers.
Loved the Lanfear Cowl immediately and purchased. Wonderful episode today! So many neat things to do and make! Could you list the books you talked about please?
I will start to list the books in the show notes. We talked about Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, Those Splendid Girls, We'll Meet Again by Katherine Dewer and Wheel of Time by Robert Jordon.
LisaR : I really thought my cat was "special" ! He had a radar for me knitting as well . The batting of needles became boring and so he'd sit directly on top of my pattern . .. 26 lb cat who played with Guinea pigs , couldn't Stand for that knitting stuff ...When he'd tire of ironing the pattern , he would get up and leave with his tail in the air ..I have to think that is the kitty "bird" equivalent !
I love your videos. I'm learning so much about yarn and wool. What was the name of the sock yarn that Simone said was her favorite? We moved to North Carolina 20 years ago from southern Maine. We still travel to Maine to see family. We are coming to Presque Isle this fall for a family visit. I wish I had time to come to Prince Edward Island and, more importantly, your farm and shop. If I were to plan a vacation there, what time of year would you recommend? Suzanne
Hi Suzanne - it was Point Prim Sock. If you aren't coming for beach time, the fall is my favourite time of year. The weather is usually good up to the middle of October. If you want to lay on the beach, mid-July to the first week of September is good.
I read the first few books of Wheel of Time as they came out, and then I told my friends that RJ would probably die before he managed to finish it. A bit sad that I was right... (Back then, I thought they were just too long and meandering).
I might watch the series on Prime to see if I like it. I am not sure I want to launch into a 20 book series. I just finished Pillars this morning and have started the next one. It's 1047 pages. Yikes!
I have signed up for the Rowan event and had planned on using yarn I previously purchased, but I changed my mind and want to purchase yarn for the Festive pattern from you. However, I cannot find it on your website. Please help direct me to the proper place! Thank you!
Hi Jeanne. I assume you are talking about the Mid-Winter Blanket? It is made in Felted Tweed. If you registered for the Make Along, you should have received an email with a link that lets you access more information about the project. When you click that link you will find a button that I think says shopping list. There you will find all of the colours that are recommended for each version of the blanket. You can then order the yarn from our shop. You can use the code FestiveMartin at check out to get 10% off the yarn when you purchase 9 or more balls of Felted Tweed. Here is the link to our Felted Tweed collection: fleeceandharmony.com/collections/rowan-felted-tweed And in case you can't find the "Welcome to the Make Along" email, here is a link to a PDF I created for my last newsletter: mcusercontent.com/7be0b331ca4b266c7e352401f/files/91a4cb63-1788-4b88-8aa2-c8f37cc751af/Mid_Winter_KAL_Newsletter_PDF.pdf
Thank you for the video! Love this channe but how can you say” nothing to report on the farm” ? Animals are ALWAYS up to something, tell us the funny stories! I work in a barn and my daughter lives on a farm and there are always hysterical things happening !
Yes there are always things happening - good and bad. But after so many episodes, we start thinking we are repeating ourselves. We have to remember we are always getting new viewers and it is not always really the same thing happening all the time...
