If you don’t like how I do these tests feel free to go buy this ammo, both chokes, and 2 hours of your time and send me the video of the “proper way”. 😂 I welcome all comments, negative or positive, but I know exactly how I want to do it and that’s how it’s gonna be done. I’ve done the long, proper way of “patterning ammo” and this is not that as I stated at the beginning. Appreciate all thoughts! 🤙🏼

I have been shooting shotguntest patterns on cardboard for more than forty years. Any test is better than no test. People who don't pattern before they hunt are never going to get the most performance from their equipment. Pattern on and keep learning.

@@michaelcarlson7110 I’m looking to get another if I get frustrated with the patternmaster this coming season in my maxus. I had the Jebs 685 in my Remington 887 and damn it’s solid. But might get the Jebs 695 this time as a back up if I get frustrated haha.

All we run is Patternmaster, they sure work well for us. We run the Boss 4 shot. That combo will bring down geese easy to. I like kicks but I think the Patternmaster is slightly better.

I also have both of these chokes. I bought the Kicks first when my buddy told me to get a Patternmaster. I had quite a few cripples especially on Honkers. The next year I made the switch to Patternmaster and never looked back. Their main focus is shorter shot string so there’s more pellets on target at the same time for more delivered kinetic energy. You will definitely notice the difference in the field. Great vid by the way.

Both of yall need to watch Surviving Duck Season's video on pattermaster in ultra slow motion. The shot string with heavy metal was longer than any choke tried. I fell for the marketing with patternmaster as well. But marketing and reality are 2 different things. I swapped and bought a competition carlsons extended.

Kicks High Flyer Extra Full with Hevi Metal #4’s.. it’s tight, especially on teal, but I have yet to find a choke that throws a more consistent pattern.

Right on, thanks for doing this. I know bismuth patterns more open than steel/tungsten and patterns best with full. I bought a case of Hevi 12 this year from Roger's and patterned it at 30 yards with factory Mod and the pattern looked superb. I have a Code Black Duck but I'm concerned that full is going to be too tight for the tungsten.

Inconsistencies in gun barrels can make two identical shotguns shoot a little different. The hunting payload and choke choice will come together when the effort is made to rule out what doesn't play well together.

All we run is pattermaster code black duck for 3 inch, or we use the code black goose for 3 1/2. It’s the bests choke that I’ve ever used.

I really don't like the Kicks compared to a Carlsons or a Pattern Master. The kicks is way more open than any others. I still recommend the Carlson's chokes. I switched a few years back and have no need to ever need another choke, except a new gun.

Carlsons cremator, all day long! Shot kicks for years until I tried a Carlson, and it was big difference out of my Franchi Affinity 3. Always been curious about pattern master but idk if I like the results I see here.

I use the code black duck on my affinity 3 and the pattern is absolutely ridiculous. Have tried the cremator but my gun prefers the patternmaster.

This is the most imperfect and unscientific pattern test. Pretty much pointless and anecdotal. You are pulling the shot obviously… you think you’re aiming in the same exact spot every time but plain and simple you’re not.

I've been waiting for this! It's all about the shot string. I also would like to see two separate hunting videos using each choke on each hunt. I think that will show the difference in hunt performance and paper performance.

The video doesn't show that well, could be the day or what ever, but Bismuth is some hard hitting stuff. I use a Pattern Master, but no other reason than that's what was available. LOL Not very scientific, but there it is. Love these videos!

Nice video.. But I'll stick to using my Remington SP 10 ga shooting Federal Black Cloud in BB through my original .720 Terror Choke for goose hunting and my Browning Gold 12ga shooting Federal Black Cloud 3 inch #3's through my Pattern Master Code Black Duck.. Both of these setups are absolutely lights out devastating on waterfowl..

A couple things with the Pattern Master. With lighter shot it shoots more open and with bigger shot it shoots tighter. I actually really like this because for real early I shoot 4’s then later I shoot 2’s. I use the same choke but get a slightly more open pattern with the 4’s. In my gun the 4’s pattern like a mod choke and 2’s pattern around imp mod. Also the shot string is no gimmick, but you either need a high speed or test on game. When I hit a bird with my pattern master it folds. The amount of energy is incredible. After a season of chasing and losing 5 cripples with my factory choke I made the switch and haven’t had a cripple since. You either miss or kill them. Pattern master is less forgiving with the shorter string. If you are off a bit your margin of error is small. So initially you may miss more ducks, was not the case for me but I bring them in as close as I can. No personal experience with Kicks but PatternMaster is my go-to choke now for waterfowl. Tough to beat it I think.

You really need to see the performance of the pattern master in the field. The shortened shot string makes it powerful it absolutely destroys ducks and geese at long range and short range. Short range it can be too tight at times but if u hit its dead. Kicks was best out of my a400 but then it bulged on me I got a new one from kicks but just dont trust it like I did. Carlson also makes awesome chokes. The code black goose, duck and anacondas are awesome. Anaconda is cheaper and shoots just as good.

You asked for opinions! You need to shim your gun properly. I know you’re shooting Browning, but checkout Benelli’s newest video on the SBE3 and how to fit your shotgun. I think it will help you out some getting to the 60/40 pattern (60% above where you aimed, 40% below). Just shimmed my SBE3 accordingly and much more confident. I also shot a patternmaster last season. It did great for BBs and 2s and 3s for me, but as soon as I went to 4s or smaller it really didn’t pattern well. Shooting Rob Robert’s now and shoots amazing over all shot size. Who knows. Science is weird. 😂

Just so you know, with pattern master the bigger the shot size is the tighter the pattern will be at range. So #6 and #4 shot will have a drastically bigger pattern at 20 and 40 yrds compared to #2. So my pattern with patter master at 40yrds with #2 shot looked like your last target at 20 yrds w your kicks choke. I have the kicks high flyer on my stoeger m3500 and I loved it. Got a benelli sbe3 and went w code black patter master. And no joke I've completely decapitated green heads at 35-40yrds. It is tough which one i prefer honestly. As id use #4 shot for my first shot and my 2nd and 3rd shot are #2 shot size. That definitely worked well. And I had the best patterns for both chokes using federal speed shock 3in 1450fps. With #4,#3,#2 and BB.

Curious to know more about Kicks constrictions. I bought the extra full and noticed a big difference in my accuracy. I'll be honest I'm kinda new and dont finish the birds in as close as some more experienced hunters so I do take a little longer of a shot. So what I think from what I understand kicks full with steel shoots more like a modified while the extra full is more like a full. Could be wrong but I would love for someone to shed more light on this.

A few suggestions that you probably are tired of hearing but that are 100% true: 1. Use a bigger sheet so you can see exactly how where all of your pattern is. 2. Make some effort to get a reliable rest as this isn't field shooting. It's patterning. Rule out as many variables as you can if you want reliable information from the test. 3. Adjust accordingly until your core pattern is where you want. In your case you want point on over the target as you are low a lot. Some of the patterns you said weren't as good were actually as good but were low. Root cause why. Could be gun fit and NOT choke/load combo if you are seeing consistent patterning off of center.

I do all my pattern testing with a Lead Sled. I know you do not use that in the marsh but it takes "human error" out of the equation. The other thing I am finding is that after shooting several loads multiple times some loads are just more consistent out of different guns for me.

In Texas I didn't need to worry about type of ammo or choke. Everything is Decoying and we shooting that 20yard mark. Shot Southern California the decoys outer edge is 38 yards. Them birds won't fly over them or next to them. The guys shooting bismuth we're getting them. Also for the Passover shooting. Im going to start carrying in my bag what I need for both types of shooting. Thanks for the 20 and 40 yard test

I just bought a new SX4 and the modified choke is .710 diameter. I’ve been looking at getting a waterfowl choke and everything I’m seeing is larger bores. Carlsons midrange is .720 and their long range is .715. I’m not sure how a larger bore is supposed to hold a tighter pattern. Any input would be helpful. Thanks

Use a bench... the whole video is useless. When patterning, you have to eliminate variables. It’s obvious that your POA is moving... especially being at 20 yards.

Shot Carlson on the SBEII didn't like them too much switch to Pattern Master code B and big differences shot shells Heavy steel shot 2 - 4 pattern/Grouping way tighter

I shot the kicks full and xfull against the pattern black goose and the pattern walk away every time. I devastated turkey’s . I won’t go back to any other choke. Love my pat.

Code black sucks. I literally patterned it vs the stock full choke and the stock had like 30 percent more pellets on target at 40 yards.

Shot it over water at some clay pigeons. Wonder if you could see a shorter shot string. Always wanted to that. If more pellets arrived at same time I reckon that means your pattern is better at killing. Maybe a hunter might want a longer shot string to make up for error. Idk just a thought

Bismuth needs choked down like lead does because its soft. Hard pellets like tungsten and steel do better with patternmaster and other less constricted chokes.

Great video. I owned patternmaster and kicks. Sold the kicks as it did not pattern well out of my browning. Thought factory choke patterned better than the kicks . Of the patternmasters I prefer the anaconda long range. Nice pattern for boss loads and drops birds.

Just bought a browning silver hunter, added the code black duck to it. Really like it, but have a kicks modified on a m3000 that I also love. Really can’t go wrong with either. I will say I do think the energy the code black is said to have is definitely there. Maybe wishful thinking but so far so good.

Ive never run anything but a carlsons IM. No need to shoot anything else. Your videos are sub marginal at best anymore. Lead sled that sucker next time. We all shoot 20-30 yards 90% of the time.

Short shot string also means you will have to be more accurate on your shots. All the pellets arrive closer to the same time on target. That means the margin for error on leads is smaller but also means it’ll hit harder. Something to think about.
