Patti is the best! Between that amazing voice and her hilarious mannerisms. I was doing my arms like she does while watching this and, when she kicked her shoes off, I lost it!

She had just lost her sister, Jackie hours before filming this video, so the pain you see in her face is real. 😞

She did that video right after she buried her sister the day before, that is why she was crying in the video.

A very emotional touching reaction 🙌🏾! Patti LaBelle was around 45 years old. I see 👁👁you have reacted to Patti LaBelle before: Lady Marmalade, On My Own, Somebody Loves You Baby, New Attitude, Love Takes Time Mariah Carey Tribute and All The Man I Need. If You Asked Me To was released as the lead single from Patti LaBelle's 1989 album: Be Yourself. The song was also featured on the movie soundtrack for the 1989 James Bond film: Licence To Kill. It was written by Diane Warren. It was produced by Stewart Levine and Aaron Zigman. The song reached #10 on the R&B chart, #11 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #79 on the Hot 100. The music video was directed by David Kellogg. The music video was filmed the day after the funeral of Patti LaBelle's sister Jacqueline "Jackie" Padgett who passed away from lung cancer at age 43. She was the third of Patti LaBelle's sisters to prematurely pass away a all three of her sisters passed away before the age of 44. As such, the context of the song changed dramatically, as a mourning Patti LaBelle, dressed in black, sings the song in a church with candles and mourning lilies, intercut with shots of her in real tears. In her 1996 autobiography: Don't Block The Blessings, Patti LaBelle explained she was also struggling with another emotion: guilt. Jacqueline "Jackie" Padgett had been struggling to eat throughout her chemotherapy treatments, but the idea of one of Patti LaBelle's egg sandwiches appealed to her. She called Patti LaBelle and begged her to make her one, but the singer refused, saying she was too tired and would do it another time. She never got the opportunity as Jacqueline "Jackie" Padgett passed away just a few days later. Patti LaBelle's guilt nagged at her during the shoot. "I couldn't hold back the tears. The more I sang, the more I thought - about what I had done, what I hadn't done, what I would never be able to do again", she recalled. "The more I thought, the harder I cried. Those tears you see on that video? There's nothing phony about them. They're real. The pain you couldn't possibly see was very real - almost unbearable. It got so bad that, before the video could be released, most of the tears ended up on the cutting room floor. That whole shoot was agonizing, but I made it through". Despite the song being a Top 10 hit on the R&B chart the song did not crossover onto the top of the Pop charts until Celine Dion covered it three years later. Regarding the subject, Patti LaBelle once explained during an interview used for the liner notes of her 1999 Greatest Hits album what she believed to be the reason for this fact: "I knew the song was a hit when I recorded it, and I was happy that Celine did it and did so well with it. But the arrangements are so close and we both have pretty powerful voices...so who knows why my version didn't take off. Maybe it was timing..". The song has been covered by other artists including 📻: Johnny Mathis, M.Y.M.P., Angeline Quinto and Erik Santos and more. Song Credits 📝: Patti LaBelle - lead vocals Bunny Hull - backing vocals Paulette Brown - backing vocals Valerie Pinkston-Mayo - backing vocals Michael Landau - guitars John Robinson - drums Lenny Castro - percussion Aaron Zigman - synthesizer programming, synth bass Lyrics 🗒: Used to be that I believed in something Used to be that I believed in love It's been a long time Since I had that feeling I could love someone I could trust someone I said I never let nobody Near my heart again, darlin' I said I never let nobody in But if you asked me to I just might change my mind And let you in my life forever If you asked me to I just might give my heart And stay here in your arms forever If you asked me to If you asked me to Somehow ever since I been around you Can't go back to being On my own Can't help feeling, darling Since I found you That I found my home That I'm finally home I said I never let nobody Get to close to me, darling I said I needed Needed to be free But if you asked me to I just might change my mind And let you in my life forever If you asked me to I just might give my heart And stay here in your arms forever If you asked me to If you asked me to Ask me to and I will give my world To you baby I need you now Ask me to and I'll do anything For you baby For you baby I'll let you in my life forever All you gotta do is ask me to And I'll give you my world I'll give you my heart I'll give you anything Just ask me, baby Oh, I'll do anything you want me to Just ask me, yes All you gotta do is ask me to If you asked me to I'll change my mind Patti LaBelle Info 📰: Patricia Louise Holt (Patti LaBelle) was born on May 24, 1944 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Miscellaneous Info 🗃: Around 1964 Patti LaBelle was engaged to Otis Williams, founding member of The Temptations. The engagement lasted a year before Patti LaBelle broke it off after fearing that Otis Williams would force her to move to Detroit and retire from performing on the road. Members of Patti LaBelle's immediate family have passed away at young ages. Her mother Bertha passed away in October 1978 from diabetes at the age of 62. Her father, Henry Holte Jr, passed away of complications from emphysema and Alzheimer's disease in October 1989 at the age of 70. All three of LaBelle's sisters passed away young. Eldest sister Vivian Hogan Rogers passed away of lung cancer in October 1975 at the age of 43. Seven years later, in October 1982, her elder sister Barbara Holte Purifoy passed away from complications of colon cancer at the age of 40. In 1987, Patti LaBelle became a spokesperson for the "National Minority AIDS Counci" and promoted the "Live Long, Sugar" campaign to encourage people of color to seek treatment for AIDS. In July 1989, three months before her father's passing, Patti LaBelle lost her youngest sister, Jacqueline "Jackie" Holte-Padgett, to brain cancer at the age of 43. A day after the singer buried Jacqueline Padgett, an emotionally-wrecked Patti LaBelle shot the music video to her song: "If You Asked Me To", where she was seen crying in various shots; the video was shot on what would've been Jacqueline Padgett's 44th birthday. The singer dedicated her 1991 album: Burnin', and her famous rendition of the song: "Wind Beneath My Wings", during her concert tour in 1991-92 to Jacqueline "Jackie" Holte-Padgett. Patti LaBelle said because of her sisters and parents passing away "before their time", she wrote in her autobiography that she feared she wouldn't make it to 50. Once she reached that age, however, the singer said she felt her life "had just begun". A year later, Patti LaBelle was diagnosed as having diabetes and later became a spokesperson for several organizations dedicated in fighting the disease. Patti LaBelle also wrote in her autobiography that she was sexually assaulted by Jackie Wilson while at the Brevoort Theatre at Brooklyn in the 1960s. Patti LaBelle Albums 📀: 1.
