Was Patti trying to name her future goddaughter, Mariah, whose first album had just released during this time…? Even though Joan’s question was "do only black singers have soul", and Mariah is mixed, still I wonder if that’s who she was thinking of. Perhaps they didn’t know each other yet at this early point in Mimi’s career. Mariah did say before that many people assumed she was either white, from seeing her, or black, from only hearing her voice on the radio. And at 6:15 someone in the audience even shouts "MARIAH CAREY" when Patti can’t recall the name she’s thinking of.
I thought this too. I assumed she was her godmother from birth. With Mariah’s mother being a singer too, I guess I thought she was friends with Patti back in the day and that’s how she became Mariah’s godmother. The fact that she doesn’t even recall her name or know she is mixed, clearly disproves that theory. How interesting
