The difference between Sutton and Patti? I have to watch Sutton's performance with my eyes wide open to capture all that visually stunning performance. With Patti, I can just close my eyes , listen to her and I'm fully entertained.
Jeff, the God of Biscuits that’s not a complaint.. it’s a contrast of what their strengths are. Patti is just vocally more superior than Sutton and there’s nothing wrong saying that alone!! Geez
@@lukeworsham1757 That's not exactly true. It's a totally different arrangement and both have a ton of key changes, and both versions have E's I believe.
I enjoy both Sutton's and Patti's performance equally. Patti's Reno is more jazzy and brassy, while Sutton's Reno seems more quirky and lighthearted, yet with just the right amount of sexiness.
I love both too 😊. Thank you for sucu accurate description. Though I must add both are sexy in their own way. I feel like Patti has that Gypsy vibe sexiness whereas Sutton has the good-girl-wanna-have-fun sexiness.
I actually like this rendition. I like how Patti doesn't over do it, but she does it in a way that is MOST DEFINITELY Reno. She took an old Merm classic and made it different! perfection!
She sounded best post Sunset Boulevard. She FINALLY learned something called "diction". She did not have a clue before. She also learned how to better connect with the song instead of having arbitrary affectations.
Wow!!! What an overwhelming performance of a song that is based in the second most spectacular event in history. Patti brings to life Gabriel blowing his horn to set off the Resurrection of the Dead followed instantly by the Rapture. Her performance dwarfs anyone else's whom I have heard.
there are no words..... she is just so.... she's just. god I meant really she is just. I love her so much her voice has such power it's amazing love her so much
my favorite reno is sutton foster but that's probably because she was my first reno and i'm just more used to her style. this one is really good too. i like when she kind of growls the lyrics
Absolutely Insane! The amount of energy and unabashed control she had over that band and the room just isn't done any more. Amazing vocals and performance. She slapped her ass at the President of the United States. I mean it was a Bush so I don't blame her. Patti is the Master.
Patti got excellent reviews in Anything Goes. She probably didn't win the Tony because people still thought she was Eva Peron and didn't like her. The part was not really written for a dancer (Ethel did not dance much) so when Sutton Foster did it, they used her dancing skills and made it fabulous. However, Patti is clearly the best singer to have ever sung it and this is the best rendition clearly.
+dohaperson1 Patti LuPone is great, but Ethel Merman is incomparable. She is still the standard by which all other Broadway musical stars are judged in the roles she created.
Merman is incomparable because there was a much smaller pool of talent back in her day, and her tenacity took her to the top. She was not the greatest singer or actress even of her time, but she did have talent and a larger than life personality combined with a lot of moxie and chutzpah.
I guess you didn't see Leslie Uggams as Reno. If she swallowed a bucket of tar, she would still be a better singer than LuPone and she was far more appropriate for Cole Porter's music.
No one sings this as good as Patti. I lost track of the video of this with Patti live onstage from the 1988 show. Oh, well. I wish we could see G.H.W Bush's face as she points right at him when she says: "Fight the Devil"
Patti's version (both intentionally and not ironically) is the in-between of Ethel's and Sutton's. My reasoning? Patti fine-tuned the role for what we know it as today. Sutton added her triple threat dance moves on to the character that Patti had already perfected. The end result for Sutton is incredible. It's even more fun that she has been able to revisit the role. Something that the English acting community can definitely respect because they never throw a role out when they are done. They put it in a closet neatly and return too it over time. Patti has done this herself with Mrs. Lovette and now Joanne in Company. Carol Channing is the most famous example of this. If she had been a bit more well in her final years she would have definitely returned one last time during the last revival of Hello Dolly with Bette Middler.
Oh my, she just sinks the heck out of that, doesn't she? I heard it on XM today and was so glad to find it here...thanks for posting! Even a shot of that fantastic trumpet player - he really matched Patti, didn't he?!
When I first saw videos of the revival with Sutton Foster, I was immediately a Sutton fan, but with this video, I think Patti won me over to her side...
it is total rule number one that we all learned in theater is that no matter if a person is bad or good on stage you do not talk or take pictures and NEVER use flash if you are about to sneak a pic. Patti is thee best singer on stage to this date.
Whoever posed this, Thank You! I saw her singing this in person at the Hollywood Bowl back in the late 80's and had always hope to see it again. She can stop my show any time. Gypsy was Fantastic!
To each their own.... but i love Patti because i grew up listening to her and just really am a huge fan. I do however like Bernadette Peters just well Patti is again my cup of tea.
Dammit. Where are today's Patti Lupones? And don't you dare say Idina Menzel or Sutton Foster. Their placement is in their noses. Patti sings with sheer power from the gut! Astonishing.
I agree. There's so few. I think that the Cynthia Erivo is the closest ive seen to being the next patti. Audra Mcdonald and Lillias White also come to mind.
Patti burning down the White House with that performance!!! She needs to star in a revival of Call Me Madam. She would definitely be the best hostess with the mostest.
This is absolutely incredible i could listen to her all day. I hate my generation why do all 15 year olds only like people who sing rubbish like call me maybe :/
@Jarrod005 I'm very surprised too that she didn't win. Remember though, Patti faced a lot of competition that year from Joanna Gleason as the Bakers Wife from Into the Woods. Gleason's classic performance was very deserving as well. Plus Patti didn't dance almost at all in the 87 revival unlike Sutton in the 11 revival
Gleason was creating a brand new character and was exceptional in the role. I still clearly remember her surprising me over and over again with her performance.
@AsiaMs I agree with you. In fact, recently listening to music from 'Call Me Madam' I was thinking who could play the role now, and the list was not long. I thought Patti Lupone, firstly, and then thought about Marin Mazzie and Audra MacDonald. I think in 10 years, Kristen Chenoweth could do it (vocally could do it now, indeed could do anything with that 5 octave range, but she still looks 20, so would not fit physically). Patti would be 1st choice for any role for the 50+ c'gory. More or less.
wow, i didnt realize it til now, but she slurs her words together, alot. it was really difficult to hear wat words she was saying. amazing voice though
