Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Here's a special treat to enjoy this day, the fantastic Patti Lupone in concert! Performing all the songs that she is famous for, singing as only she can. Enjoy!
Patti Lupone is larger than life, *the* prima donna of contemporary musical theater, no mistake. She has it all. I was extremely fortunate to have seen her perform on Broadway. I pity anyone who doesn't know her work well enough to love her.
I love Patti but Glenn Close is definitely the ultimate Norma. It’s not a matter of keys. It’s not about who can sing the higher it’s who can convey the right portrayal. threatening, strong yet very vulnerable and scary crazy. That’s Glenn.
Holy crap! Did she say Dick Gallagher at the piano after "Don't Cry for Me Argentina"? What a blast from the past. He played for my one-man show at Don't Tell Mommas. What a talented and beautiful person. RIP.
DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA It won't be easy You think it's strange When I try to explain how I feel That I still need your love After all that I've done You won't believe me All you will see Is a girl you once knew Although she's dressed up To the nines At sixes And sevens with you I had to let it happen I had to change Couldn't stay all my life down at heel Looking out Of the window Staying out of the sun So I chose freedom Running around Trying everything new But nothing Impressed me At all I never Expected it to Don't cry for me, Argentina The truth is I never left you All through my wild days My mad existence I kept my promise Don't keep your distance And as for fortune And as for fame I never invited them in Though it seemed To the world They were all I desire They are illusions They're not The solutions they promise to be The answer Was here All the time I love you And hope you love me Don't cry for me Argentina
I DREAMED A DREAM There was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting There was a time Then it all went wrong I dreamed a dream in times gone by When hope was high and life worth living I dreamed, that love would never die I dreamed that God would be forgiving Then I was young and unafraid And dreams were made and used and wasted There was no ransom to be paid No song unsung, no wine untasted But the tigers come at night With their voices soft as thunder As they tear your hope apart As they turn your dream to shame He slept a summer by my side He filled my days with endless wonder He took my childhood in his stride But he was gone when autumn came And still I dream he'll come to me That we will live the years together But there are dreams that cannot be And there are storms we cannot weather I had a dream my life would be So different from this hell I'm living So different now from what it seemed Now life has killed the dream I dreamed
THERE'S NOBODY HERE BUT US CHICKEN One night farmer Brown was takin' the airs Locked up the barnyard with the greatest of care Down in the hen house, somethin' stirred When he shouted, "Who's there?" This is what he heard “There ain't nobody here but us chickens There ain't nobody here at all So calm yourself and stop that fuss There ain't nobody here but us We chickens tryin' to sleep and you butt in And hobble, hobble hobble hobble with your chin” “There ain't nobody here but us chickens There ain't nobody here at all You're stompin' around and shakin' the ground You're kickin' up an awful dust We chicken's tryin' to sleep and you butt in And hobble, hobble hobble hobble, it's a sin” “Tomorrow is a busy day We got things to do, We got eggs to lay We got ground to dig and worms to scratch It takes a lot of settin', gettin' chicks to hatch” “Ohh, there ain't nobody here but us chickens There ain't nobody here at all So quiet yourself and stop that fuss There ain't nobody here but us Kindly point that gun the other way And hobble, hobble hobble of and hit the hay”
SURRABAYA JOHNNY 31:09 I was young, I was just sixteen then When you came up from Burma one day And you told me to pack up my suitcase And I did, and you took me away I said, "Do you work nice and steady Or do you go sailing and roving out to sea?" And you said, "I have a job on the railroad And baby, how swell it's all gonna be." You said a lot, Johnny. It was all lies You sure had me fooled, right from the start I hate you when you laugh at me like that Take that pipe out of your mouth, Johnny Surabaya Johnny. Is it really the end? SurabayaJohnny. Will the hurt ever mend? Surabaya Johnny. Ooh, I burn at your touch You got no heart, Johnny, but oh, I love you so much Thought at first you were kind and gentle 'til I packed up and went off with you And it lasted two weeks until one day You laughed at me and hit me too You dragged me all over the city Up the river and down to the sea Now I look at myself in the mirror AThere an old woman looking back at me You didn't want love, Johnny, you wanted cash I gave you all I had. You wanted more Oh, don't look at me that way I'm only trying to talk to you Wipe that grin off your face, Johnny Surabaya Johnny. Is it really the end? SurabayaJohnny. Will the pain never mend? Surabaya Johnny. How I burn at your touch You got no heart, Johnny, but oh, I love you so much When we met I forgot to ask you Why they called you that funny name But in every hotel on the seacoast I found out, and I loved you all the same I'm tired. I'm worn out The sea's pounding in my ears And I reach out my arms to hold you You're not here and who even cares? You got no heart, Johnny. You're just no good You going now? Oh, tell me why I love you after all, Johnny, like that very first day Don't laugh at me no more, Johnny Surabaya Johnny. Is it really the end? SurabayaJohnny. Will the hurt ever mend? Surabaya Johnny. Oh, I burn at your touch You got no heart, Johnny, but oh, I love you I love you, I love you so much
SLEEPY MAN Been a busy day With some heavy seas But you've done your best, sleepy man Let your troubles lay Let your breathing ease While I rub your chest, sleepy man You're all done with the run of the race...for today You've got plenty of running to face Come tomorrow I'm right here, always near Always lovin' my dear, sleepy man Not a girl I know Has a better deal Than my life with you, sleepy man If I let it show How you make me feel We'll be up 'til 2, sleepy man You're all done with the run of the race...for today You've got plenty of running to face Come tomorrow I'm right here, always near Always lovin' my dear, sleepy man Yes, I'm right here, always near And I love you, my dear sleepy man
AS IF I NEVER SAY GOODBYE Don't know why I'm frightened I know my way around here The cardboard trees, the painted scenes, the sound here Yes a world to rediscover But I'm not in any hurry And I need a moment … The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways The atmosphere as thrilling here as always Feel the early morning madness Feel the magic in the making Why everything's as if we never said goodbye … I've spent so many mornings Just trying to resist you I'm trembling now You can't know how I've missed you Missed the fairy-tail adventures In this ever-spinning playground We were young together … I'm coming out of make-up The lights already burning Not long until the camera's will start turning And the early morning madness And the magic in the making Yes, everything is as if we never said goodbye … I don't want to be alone that's all in the past This world's waited long enough I've come home at last! … And this time will be bigger And brighter than we knew it So watch me fly, we all know I can do it Could I stop my hand from shaking? Has there ever been a moment with so much to live for? … The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways So much to say not just today but always We'll have early morning madness We'll have magic in the making Yes, everything is as if we never said goodbye Oh, please don't ever ever make me say goodbye
ANYTHING GOES: Times have changed And we've often rewound the clock Since the Puritans got a shock When they landed on Plymouth Rock If today Any shock they should try to stem 'Stead of landing on Plymouth Rock Plymouth Rock would land on them In olden days a glimpse of stocking Was looked on as something shocking But now, God knows Anything Goes Good authors too who once knew better words Now only use four letter words Writing prose, Anything Goes The world has gone mad today And good's bad today And black's white today And day's night today When most guys today That women prize today Are just silly gigolos And though I'm not a great romancer I know that I'm bound to answer When you propose When grandmama whose age is eighty In night clubs is getting matey with gigolo's Anything Goes When mother pack and leave poor father Because they decide they'd rather be tennis pros Anthing Goes If driving fast cars you like If low bars you like If old hymns you like If bare limbs you like If Mae West you like Or me undressed you like Why, nobody will oppose! When every night The set that's smart Is intruding in nudist parties in studios Anything Goes The world has gone mad today And good's bad today And black's white today And day's night today When most guys today That women prize today Are just silly gigolos And though I'm not a great romancer I know that I'm bound to answer When you propose Anything Goes If saying your prayers you like If green pears you like If old chairs you like If back stairs you like If love affairs you like With young bears you like Why nobody will oppose! And though I'm not a great romancer I know that I'm bound to answer When you propose Anything Goes... Anything Goes!
Thanks Corey! I saw this show 4 times when she did it on Broadway...I was one of the best shows I have ever seen! What a wonderful gift to get to see it again!
Thanks for the nice comments! I've seen clips from this show posted, but I thought, what the heck, post the whole show. Enjoy it while its still up. Such a great performer!
