Patti LuPone, who found fame thanks in part to her Tony-winning portrayal of Eva Perone in Broadway's 'Evita', sits down with Ernie Manouse and discusses some of her favorite roles, reveals a very interesting film opportunity that she turned down during the 1990's, and shares the lessons learned during a career that has now spanned five different decades. Episodes of InnerVIEWS with Ernie Manouse are available on DVD at houstonpbs.org.

Patti LuPone used to live in my building, a rent-controlled tenement on West 21st St in NYC, before she hit the big time. By the time I moved in in 1981, she was already successful so I never saw her, but the old-timers would brag "hey, that's Patti's apartment." Apparently she sublet it.

I am actually quite shocked how she bluntly admits she could not sing the part of Eva Peron.WOW. Whenever I hear the American Premiere Recording I hear a literal virtuoso ... a Master of her Craft. The way she breezed though it was amazing and even in grainy footage of her singing it on stage was outstanding. She captured the essence and power of Eva Peron. I know the role is hard to sing... typical Webber, where the singer is required to jump octaves... and many of the notes require the female singer to sing in chest/belt or mixed voice notes in higher registers... But Lupone definitely fooled me on this one. I still proclaim her the definite stage Eva Peron.
@orion8835
@orion8835 5 лет назад
Yes she could get through the role however that is different to having all the gears locked in and it being a freer sing . The role is written badly and full of an almost inhuman amount of jumping around registers . Lupone refers to singing the role in Australia,which she describes as finally being able sing the role. I think she means that it was placed better and therefore was an easier sing .

Patti is such an amazing person. I want to work on Broadway one day and I am praying that I get to see her. Working with her would be incredible but seeing her and getting a picture would be amazing. She is such a versatile actress. Every role she plays is her own, whether its a new character or one that's existed for decades. Viva Lupone! :)

Basically, it is written in a really uncomfortable part of a womans vocal range. It's written almost entirely in the mix voice where your chest & head registers mix. The score called for the upper mix/almost head voice to be strong & powerful & almost operatic. As she said in the interview, it is a series of D, E, F & a couple of High G's & then it will drop rapidly to low E's. Also, the pace of the score. It's fast then slow & the melodies are constantly changing & it's all over the place.

Around the time of this interview (2003) there was a miniseries called "The Reagans," which chronicled the presidency of Republican hero Ronald Reagan. The movie was originally slated to air on CBS (network TV), but when conservatives objected to its portrayal of Reagan, CBS decided not to show it and instead it aired on Showtime (paid cable) where less people saw it. The controversy was that Republicans used intimidation tactics to suppress the movie, which some (like Patti) called censorship.
@pAusten

How ironic the word "censorship" is even more dangerous 8 years later. Or does it make a difference who is being censored?
@musicaltheatergeek79
@musicaltheatergeek79 3 года назад
@@pAusten I agree that far-left liberals have gone mad censoring things they don't like within the past 5 years. That is why I stopped being a liberal; I consider myself a centrist now. As a proponent of the arts, I despise any attempt to squelch freedom of expression. In the past, it used to come from the right, but now it seems to be coming from the left.

I get what Patti is saying about Les Mis. Although I have never had an experience being in a show that is so "perfect" I would not want to do another production of it, I have had the experience of watching a production like that. It was the 2013 revival of Pippin. After I saw it I said to myself that I never wanted to see another production of this show. I didn't want that experience to be tampered with.
@KenDanieli
@KenDanieli 9 лет назад
James Winer I saw the original Les Mis in London about 6 months in and it was perfect. And she's exactly right about Broadway, which I saw early on as well, because it was good but not nearly as great as London. Though it wasn't all an imitation because they didn't do a lot of it with British accents and even the Thenardier and wife were played with American accents instead of Cockney, which was a very poor choice.

THIS! HER! THIS! I had the same escape on stage at 5 or 6 and was in the tri state area too. I left NY to study in Chicago? Why? Well there were no Jimmy awards or anything like that and my father had cancer and died when I was 10. Events shape lives and bring us opportunities or they don't. I never wanted to be in the box or up on the silver lining drive in screen. My Mom and step Dad, Acting school in Chicago, no one knew what to do with this gay youngest of five kid who could belt in that old school tradition kid with trauma and jokes and a healthy appetite for anything.. The microphones had just become permanent on BROADWAY. They didn't trickle down until the 90s.I was loud. I have a good heart. It is my mouth that is the problem or was it? Anyway, maybe I am a no talent Ox cause I have wasted my life. I should have been sent to Patti's Summer Camp for Broadway Babies who don't know the difference between Jewish and Italian and to whom it is all just NY. I coulda met her in CT and still have enjoyed a meatball wedge or a bacon egg and cheese if needed, and they ARE needed. If you know, you know. I too wonder if Che and Evita live close to each other in Litchfield or perhaps one in Westchester at an appropriate distance, and If rumors are true and this Goddess is living in NYC with Aubrey Plaza, oh hell. I was going to say if I don't get invited over for a Hot and Dirty or a spot of tea I am gonna give someone such a pinch! The elephant who really said that is in my room right now, but even if we don't mention him, my dream won't come true. SO I will say this; hearing about having a one to one and full eye contact with a mouse while climbing to your Rainbow High each night, killed me. I'm dead, but I am glad I lived long enough to see this interview and honesty. I want another twenty eight minutes and fifty eight seconds.

I mean, Daniel Radcliffe got very good press for Equus (I know that much) and I know he did do stage work in "The Play I wrote" when he was 13 and things. Look how great she looks without the heavy make up we often see her plastered in. She’s cool, albeit I can see that she can be a bit of a gorgon. Talking about stamina she seems a bit contradictory. Stage 8 nights a week. But 16 hr days on tv, sounds like she’s not respecting the rev actors that have the stamina for that for years. Her dissing the bridge and tunnel crowd is pretty shocking. Her audience ffs. What she said about Evita and the voice is interesting, I’m not sure I believe her when she says she got no help, they knew she was their moneymaker, why wouldn’t they? However, Americans forget that she didn’t originate the role, and Elaine Paige had delivered those notes perfectly from day one, and sustained it for over a year....she’s spot on about the Reagan bio etc. All that aside, I’ve seen her be brilliant on tv (Pose) and live I’ve seen her be dreadful (Sweeney Todd) and amazing (Gypsy), but she is a real stage star no question.
