Paul, Apostle of Christ is the story of two men. Luke, as a friend and physician, risks his life every time he ventures into the city of Rome to visit Paul, who is held captive in Nero’s darkest, bleakest prison cell. Before Paul’s death sentence can be enacted, Luke resolves to write another book, one that details the beginnings of “The Way” and the birth of what will come to be known as the church. But Nero is determined to rid Rome of Christians, and does not flinch from executing them in the grisliest ways possible.
Bound in chains, Paul’s struggle is internal. He has survived so much-floggings, shipwreck, starvation, stoning, hunger and thirst, cold and exposure-yet as he waits for his appointment with death, he is haunted by the shadows of his past misdeeds. Alone in the dark, he wonders if he has been forgotten . . . and if he has the strength to finish well.
Two men struggle against a determined emperor and the frailties of the human spirit in order to bequeath the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.

Saw this last night with my wife and all I can say is, Wow!!! This was hands down the best Biblical movie I've ever seen. Can't be beat in terms of showing how life was in the first century in Rome. So refreshing to see a movie made to show how it really was and what it means to be a believer in persecution and putting faith in He who really matters, not being afraid of temporary suffering.

For all those believers in Christ, this was a tear jerkier for me. Even though the movie was rated as good, the part of Paul touched my soul. It is amazing how knowing the Word and the presence of the Spirit can touch our being by just imagining the suffering that Paul bared in the name of Christ. Last part of the movie did it... I could not hold my tears as I watched a man that I believe truly loved the LORD.

I just saw this movie today. There were some very powerful scenes, especially if you are familiar with the story of Paul. I found the depiction of his healing through Ananias, very moving. It was difficult to fight back the tears, because of how it showed the grace and love of Christ. Paul's story was a classic one of redemption. I've been waiting for years, to see it portrayed well on film.

I haven't seen this yet, but I saw a trailer. Caviezel was great as Christ. His distinctive speaking voice didn't detract from the Passion, because who but a scholar had any idea what he was saying in Aramaic anyway. But this movie is in English. I'm not saying its a bad accent, but not one I equate with the early Church.

I think it was a beautiful picture of what early christians could have been like in times of distress. They had essential emphasis on the bases of love. The story of Paul and Luke is as good as it can get in modern society and the current movie industry. At least, while been targeted to american christians it was not the typical cheesy-chickflick christian southern movie, we are used to see. Now, I think it was more cinematic than dramatic having in mind the complex storylines and the genre, overall good job Guys! Never thought I would ever say that. Keep it up. Be unapologetic about your movies, we need to be more bold than traditional. Nowdays, we are drunk with religiosity!

I definitely think you guys did a fantastic job in being as biblical as possible with the story. Even the small, minute details and passing comments (like the mention by Luke that even the Corinthians helped him with getting to Rome, or that Titus and Timothy had silenced the false teachers in Crete and Ephesus) were taken directly from Scripture. I agree that this is how Christian movies ought to be done. Great work!

Saw the film yesterday with another Sister in Christ... 4:10 pm showing ...4 other persons were in there.. 2 elderly couples.. As we were walking out a gentleman asked if we had seen the film...wanted to know our thoughts..he was there with 75 other men from his church to watch the film... after viewing this video I feel good bout my review to him... I believe they did the best with the budget to bring to the screen a very relevant then ever story line of Paul's life. it was inspiring and motivated me to go and read Acts more closely..( since a lot of scripture was left out) but most of all, the one thing I believe was most powerful was how we are reminded that no matter the persecution... we have LOVE and we have overcome evil with this LOVE... the suffering is but a MOMENT..but to die in CHRIST is to live ETERNALLY with HIM! The film reminded me of the WORD of GOD in Galatians 6: 9 and Isaiah 40: 31. May we not faint during our times of persecution!

I saw it and highly recommend it. I think it is closer to scripture than most religious films. The only part I would question is the film giving the idea that Paul was haunted by past sins or was in depression or doubting his salvation. I find no scripture to support that - rather I find the opposite - Paul wrote that he would rather be with Christ but it was better for those he was helping that he remain on earth for a while. He wrote - To be absent from the body is to be present with Christ and also wrote to die is gain.
@ginaf2103
@ginaf2103 6 лет назад
lw216316 maybe it was meant to portray the thorn in his side that Paul writes about in 2 Corinthians 12:7. We don't know if the thorn refers to a physical, spiritual, or emotional affliction.
@lw216316
@lw216316 6 лет назад
That's a good idea. My personal opinion is that Paul's thorn in the flesh was his poor vision. He was blinded for 3 days after seeing Christ. I think this affected his eyesight for the rest of his life. He dictated his letters that we read. There is one he wrote himself or at least the last part of it. He says in it - you see what large letters I write. His vision was so poor he had to write with large letters in order to see it himself. Since the thorn is one "in the flesh", my opinion is it was a physical problem such as his poor vision. I think God did not answer Paul's request for healing in order to keep him humble. There is a popular song called "Thank God for unanswered prayers". Grace and Peace to you.
@chinojarjos
@chinojarjos 6 лет назад
lw216316 I myself suffer severe eye problems since I was a kid and altough they can be very troubleling physically, it is not exactly a thorn in the flesh, it could be something more personal or abstract than physical. We also need to understand is that Paul is not the Messianic figure we are looking for, he was just a follower of Christ as all the rest of the Apostles. He himself said "follow me as I follow Jesus" Nowdays with the scriptural accounts of the gospels and the acts of the Apostles and other different resources We are to Follow Christ not Paul! Just a thought. Paul can be a little overemphasized in the reform or some of our theology that could create some confusion.
@paulmiller8673

He certainly didn't seem to take his own salvation for granted. 1 Cor 9 (last verse), for instance, and then the next chapter is St. Paul's warnings about varying obstacles.
@agentmikster44
@agentmikster44 6 лет назад
I would hardly think that Paul doubted his salvation. If anything, I think most of his struggles were fleshly, for in some verses he even seemed to indicate that he knew he would see Christ after death. But I don't think he had any problems with his vision, large letter most likely meant long, as there was often much to say. Because I personally find most people in today's age severely underestimate the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul was filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking and praying in tongues, and likely had other gifts as well. Today it is rare to see people with these gifts or even baptized with the spirit.

So glad these Catholic faith Brothers are talking about Biblical Accuracy. Wish they would tell the Pope He isn't God, nor is he God's spokesman on the earth either. Jesus Christ is our high priest, Lord, God, and Coming King, and the pope is none of these. Hopefully many Catholics will pick up their Bibles and see the Truth and the lies of their Pope and find a personal intimate relationship with God for themselves, and see no Priest nor Pope is needed between them and God. In fact religion is the biggest stumbling block to relationship with God, in Christ, and to know that by the power of God's Holy Spirit, all believers are called to transformation through sanctification, and are forgiven and should no longer focus on the dead man of sin who should no longer be controlling us, but the Spirit man, can and will, change us, by grace, not of our doing, but through God's supernatural work in us. Praise God and to Him ALL the Glory. Love is the greatest tool we have as Believers and followers of Christ Jesus. In Him is All we ever need, Amen.

Carla, I think right now evangelical Christians are having to deal with enough stuff in their own eyes to even try to help our catholic brothers, this a hard statement to considere but we are all very far from Christ. "We all have gone astray like sheep without a sheperd." I understand your jelousy about this matters but alot of our bias towards certain denominations have way more background than pure theology or understanding of Christ. Our own denominations are not even scriptural and we are too far from the truth. In Christ Jesus.
@donquixotedelamancha58
@donquixotedelamancha58 6 лет назад
chinojarjos, I'm glad that your comment is more balanced than the initial one on this thread, and more helpful. But, still, there is a touch of arrogance and misunderstanding in the idea that Evangelical Christians need to "help" Catholics. The writer / director of this movie is a Catholic, as is the person who plays Luke. Are they not good Christians? Do you need to help them? Just, please, can we put away our stupid divisions and learn to respect on another. Jesus prayed that we may be one
@chinojarjos

David Gonzalez Hello David in my comment I tried to be as partial as possible with that in mind I was still commenting on something that was previouly wrriten so I was referring to her faith. I myself come from a evagelical background but I do not considere myself among their faith alone (Although I love them and many times share with them) Actually, there are plenty of things that I have had to dropped from my original background to actually follow Christ, and I am still in the same race to persue Christ, in fact, I do not think we can race well unless we become lighter (referring fo self, becoming lesser). Anyways this was my line - " Evangelical christians are having to deal with enough stuff in their own eyes to even try to help our catholic brothers" and this is the verse I was referring to -"How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye" Matthew 6:42
@chinojarjos
@chinojarjos 6 лет назад
David Gonzalez Now I am sorry I offended you I hope you can see pass that, I did not mean to keep you from the body of Christ. By the way I think I dropped the word "Evangelical" in my original comment, for that reason it can make it sound like only "Evangelicals" are true christians which is not true. Finally, we look carefully according to scripture, there should only be one church body per town or city regardless of our affiliations or backgrounds and we are all failing there. I agree with you David.

They did a lot of research to portray the lives of Luke and Paul in this movie, we see in these verses from 2nd Timothy that Luke is with Paul in Rome at the time of his death,6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. 9 Be diligent to come to me quickly; 10 for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica-Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. 11 Only Luke is with me. also we see in the first chapter of Philippians his relationship with some of the guards,12 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, 13 so that it has become evident to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; 14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. so that in the making of this movie that even though some of the stories are not true the portrayal of Luke and Paul along with the history of how the Christians at the time of Nero were treated are true.

Every Christian can be a Paul or a Luke. The choice is yours and mine but how much do you value your life and your comforts? The power of the Gospel of Christ is that it takes only one man or woman to walk against the tide to see how the world can change for the better. But who can bare the scorn, stripes and possible death that awaits those who dare try. Most want fame and adulation, riches, power & worldly comforts. Who can suffer the vinegar and thirst that comes with walking through the narrow gate that leads to eternal paradise?

Brad, the situation in Rome way overplays the little historical information we actually have about Nero's persecution. Also, Luke is supposed to be writing Paul's story to create the Book of Acts. In reality, Acts ends with Paul living in a rented home under house arrest and receiving visitors. Whatever happens in a second arrest later is speculation and Luke nor Scripture ever mentions it. Most of all, however, the Paul of this film bears no resemblance to the Paul of history and Scripture. The film portrays a broken down man plaqued by his past and tormented by his past sins, guilt, and failures. This is not the apostle who has left these things behind, and presses on toward the mark of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. This was not the Paul who wrote about joy in Philippians while in a Roman prison. In addition, i honestly could see very little evidence of a living, resurrected Jesus nor the power, comfort, and guidance of the Holy Spirit in any the characters or script. I feel that the main purpose of what i was watching was to make the viewer experience an emotional cry, rather than present a message of hope and victory.
@royrow8879
@royrow8879 6 лет назад
Thanks Brad, for such an open and kind reply. It allows dialog to take place. So you will know, I am a retired consecutive minister with a strong interest in history. The first mention we have from anywhere about the burning of Rome and Nero's persecution of Christians comes from a document written 50 years after the event by a believer named Tacitus. The movie is based loosely and freely on his document. The only other real source that exists was a history also written about 50 years afterwards by a Roman who tells of the fire, but does not link any persecution of Christians with it. The next historical sources come church writings almost 200 years after the event. This is where we find mention of Peter's and Paul's death. Any document, or edict, or record from Nero or Roman authorities has never been found about this persecution. There is also no mention anywhere of persecution outside the city of Rome. Zondervan's History Of Christianity states; "We do not know how many Christians died in this persecution, although presumably it cannot have been very many, simply because there were not that many Christians around yet." Even Tacitus in his account writes that Nero's persecution was designed to "amuse the people." We gather with some clarity that he did make human torches to light up a garden party and made games with captives in the circus. Tacitus does tell us that he tortured some known believers and from that information arrested others. These are terrible things, without question. It is a far cry, however, from a movie that turns Rome into a concentration camp, uses bodies for streetlights all over town, and has people slipping around using fake IDs to stay alive. Even Tacitus tells us that Nero's actions aroused the mercy of the people of Rome, who did not approve. My point is that the truth is harsh enough without having to carry it to its farthest extreme. At best, you might be able to say that this movie was loosely "based" on a true story. That is my humble opinion.

Man, the anti-Catholic messages on this comment section are really deplorable. Do you think Jesus is happy at how divisive and ill-informed your comments are? Yes, the director/writer is Catholic. Yes, the actor playing Luke is Catholic. Does that bother you? You're attacking your own cause without even realizing it. Don't you think the Church has been divided enough as it is? He prayed that we might be one

David Gonzalez there are some hateful comments here true, but what you're saying is really relative and slightly contradictory to Christianity, and in a , much more gentle way, than some comments youre doing the same here. I will actually also defend both you and the comments as it is difficult to have meaningful discussion, especially in this regard via youtube comments. Therefore, what I will say is in defense of you and the comments here, but I am against the catholic church as a whole, not the patrons themselves because I feel the Catholic religion's history speaks for itself and I personally do not regard Catholicism as Christian, then again, nor do I Mormonism, Baptist, Methodist, Pentecost, etc really. Not as they exist generally today, sorry whomever I aggrevate here, but it's the truth. Roman Catholicism all but eradicated Christianity in its early years, and all of the other mentioned religions are spin offs of Catholicism, not Christianity. It would be contradictory of the bible and Christianity to NOT point this out, however approach IS everything and the approach in these comments most certainly do not reflect God. I loved this movie. I found it very good, and though not 100% accurate and somewhat I felt politically correct, for thise still kind of finding themselves within the word, understanding God, understanding the bible, I found this an EXCELLENT introductory film and one that I think anyone who has even a very limited and basic belief in Christ, regardless the method of worship should see, compare to the bible themselves and take from it what they may. That is my feelings on the subject of both the film and comment discussions as a whole.

New Channel, Catholics are Christian, as is the Universal Church. Perhaps one day you'll be brave enough to really look into that for yourself, not by reading anti-Catholic histories and tracts, but by actually getting to know the Church first hand. No one ever said that the Church would be perfect. The first Pope denied Christ three times. And, I think you'll find that Protestant Churches, or whatever you want to call them, that have come along in competition against the Catholic Church have ended up being no better themselves. The problem is the problem of evil, which knows no bonds among people. Or would you say that your Church community, if you belong to one, is perfect?

I felt like this movie was made to be safe. The prayer they put in the movie took away God's glory by not speaking it. They really played the Hollywood safe card and took several creative liberties. While it was a decent film it could have been more scriptural and glorifying to our Father Yahovah. Still better than all the violent, vulgar movies coming out weekly!

I haven't seen yet but thank you I am sure I will feel the same. They have to hold back in order to get any secular people to even go with their Christian friends. Many Christians in the US are not getting the real gospel. I wish they would just read their Bibles and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth. God is not as concerned about what we go through in life, as He is how we respond to what we go through. Do we fold and build a permanent home in the valley of self pity or do we see from the eyes of eternity and let Jesus be Lord of our lives, even in the midst of the worst possible sufferings. We are called to shine and be Christ centered, which is why Jesus said, deny self, or rather die to self and follow Him. Self awareness and separation from God are the curse of the fall, and the greatest lie the devil pulled off is self centered, it's all about you and what God can do for us, instead of being transformed by the Spirit for God's Glory to be seen on this earth, through those who have laid their lives on the alter of God, and said here is everything, I trust YOU alone, come what may. The best day of my life was when I died to me. Now I am not hurt by people but for them. Agape Love of God is my aim, in Christ Jesus, Amen.

It speaks well of the writer's research that the actor who plays Paul has short hair. 1 Corinthians 11:14 KJVS [14] Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But the writer may have overlooked this verse. 2 Corinthians 10:10 KJVS [10] For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.

Luke Wagner the context of the first verse you referenced isnt physical appearance, its shameful for a man to take on feminine characteristics. It's not a direct reference to homosexuality, which is often claimed, it says shameful, not an abomination. Cut and dry, modern English of it would be, if youre a man, act like one, if youre a woman act like one, conduct yourselves accordingly and appropriately, it is shameful not to because you are created as a man or woman, also what is meant about women wearing a dress. God really doesnt care what type of garb or clothing you wear.

The one thing I wanted to witness when I went and watch this movie as I wanted to witness where Paul said that people would have a seared conscience. The reason why I say that is the majority of Christians have a seared conscience even if you can prove that they're wrong they won't listen. They say you can't lose salvation that's not what the Bible says. Salvation isn't granted to the wicked. Can you give your life to Christ and go back to your Wicked Ways yes you can. In that you will lose the Holy Spirit.

As a Christian Pastor, I know I don't stand alone when I say this movie was not only unbiblical but just bad. It was largely composed of an unbiblical account of Aquila and Priscila, and an unbiblical account of Paul in prison with a prison guard with a sick daughter. When I paid to see this, I expected to see Paul's life and work as revealed in Acts. This was nothing of the like. I don't say this simply to be critical, but because I know when something as precious as the word of God is being disrespected and misrepresented before many people who don't read their bibles. They even had a scene where Luke intentionally got forged Roman documents just to see Paul in prison. To suggest Luke practiced such dishonestly and illegality is insulting to the character of these men of God that served our Lord Jesus. Here's a suggestion, the bible is exciting by itself. Acts is exciting by itself. Make a movie simply portraying those accounts that we see in Acts. There's no need to make fictional changes and false degrading accounts of biblical men as has been done in this piece.

I think by unbiblical, you mean, extra-biblical, or in other words, content not in the Bible right? Like when a pastor preaches and talks about what the disciples might have though when Jesus was killed, or, any other illustrative storytelling device used to bring linear text to life?

As a 17 year old(many years ago) I went to see Jesus Christ Superstar on the big screen. Though not accurate and very musical/theatrical it changed my life. What I remember most was the love and sacrifice that was portrayed through the character of Christ...I will never forget it actually. I am a follower of Christ for well over 20 years now. Little steps along the way and whatever God choses to use to get peoples attention and to draw them has to count for something. How about we pray Pastor "that those who see this movie find the Truth in it and begin to see the Lord as their Savior or for those who are saved to see their deeper need for Him. That this be one step closer to seeking the Kingdom of God. in Jesus name!" I try not to underestimate what God can do in the hearts of people with such a tool as this movie. May God bless you and keep you and make His face shine on you Joshua.

The movie was good, but not accurate. The movie made Paul a martyr and beheaded him. The Book of Acts states Paul spent awhile in prison. But he was a Roman citizen and went before Caesar to defend himself and was declared innocent. The last 2 verses of Acts 28 states Paul rented his own house and taught the word of God, no man forbidding him. The world always makes Christians weak and the victim. Paul brought the word to the Gentiles. The Bible does not say he was beheaded. How sad. God would have said it in his word if Paul, the greatest apostle, was martyred. WRONG!
@kaijukong2878
@kaijukong2878 6 лет назад
Terry0426 You are blind. According to history, Paul was beheaded in Rome. What of the other apostles deaths? the Bible makes very little mention. The Bible does not tell us everything about the lives of these men. Also, Paul was in a Roman prison when he wrote Timothy, in which he wrote, “I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come.” Paul knew he was going to be executed. You clearly do not know Scripture
@dbonyadi
@dbonyadi 6 лет назад
hunter melott, obviously, you do not believe the Bible is the true source of the life of the early Christians. What chapter and verse does it say that Paul was beheaded and martyred?? The Bible talks about the life and death of other Apostles. Paul wrote Timothy when he was in prison. But the book of Acts last 2 verses is the last account of Paul. Acts 28:30-31. According to the Bullinger Bible, Acts 28 was written in 62-64 AD. But I’m not getting in a debate with you. Believe whatever you want.

Acts is what it is. This film is a dramatization of the traditional story about Paul. Think of it as a parable, such as Our Lord chose to use to make his point.
