The OG ECW could have survived the 2000s but wouldn’t have survived in the 2010s as society as a whole has gotten more and more soft.

I have watched Eastern Championship Wrestling morph into ECW when Shane Douglas crossed the line....Cancel culture would have eliminated ECW by now, but ECW had years of life left, as shown by the responses to One Night Stand 05/06. WWECW killed the product for good but so much that was displayed in Extreme rings lives on today.

ECW was the definition of 'lightning in a bottle'. People can try to replicate it but it won't have the same feel as that wild west that was early and mid 90s ECW.

ECW was pro wrestling finally catching up to 90s pop culture. When things are getting grungier, more dark and real, WWF and WCW stayed very bright and family friendly like it was still the 80s. Wasn’t until both companies took influence from ECW that their product started to change for the better and wrestling became hotter than it ever was. Every wrestling company or era of any company that has come by since has taken influence from ECW.

The Legacy of ECW is the wrestling of today I think specifically, it was where the "Smart" fan culture really was born. We take it for granted now, but at the time, you didn't get entire crowds of fans who not only knew it was a work, but were able to appreciate the nuances of what was going on. We hear "This is Awesome" and "You fucked up" chants all the time now, but back then they were unheard of in mainstream wrestling where the majority of the audience were still "marks", but the ECW fanbase showed the world that you could suspend your disbelief and enjoy the product for what it really was.

I learned so much as a young wrestling fan from those ECW shows and crowds. It sounds cliche but I learned, by getting smart, that there is an art to wrestling, a performance. Even if a wrestler lost all the time you paid them respect for putting others over and having horrible stuff done to them. Learning that an incredible performance could be given by someone in a losing effort because of how they sold, how they made the winner look, and the moments they gave us. It felt like this big awesome club, where we made fun, we cheered, and cursed the heels but in the end we loved the whole roster.

ECW was a singular moment where the audience and the wrestlers were on the same team. It wasn’t Superstars and their fans. It was us. We all were ECW. Paul made us believe that bullshit, because Paul believed that bullshit too. We all did. I will never forget it.

ECW was probably the most intense show from start to finish. Even when the show was at a slower pace, it was that build up to the intense moment. Everything was done for a reason. Even without the "hardcore" aspect.

ECW was a small Indy promotion that punched well above its weight and helped changed the landscape of wrestling. All thanks to Paul Heyman’s vision he had for where wrestling was going at that time in the mid 90’s. The biggest problem with ECW was money, they had no money to keep talent, and very little money to pay the talent as well. ECW was almost like crowdfunded promotion in a way, the talent would have to take extra jobs to help the promotion to get paid better, some of the talents would design merch, some of the talents would help book the shows, some of the talents would train rookies at wrestling schools. But because Paul Heyman is such a good talker and motivator, he managed to get the best out of his talents both in the ring and out. ECW tried their hardest but their product was just a no go for good sponsors and advertisers, or to get good TV deals. They signed with TNN in 1999 but the deal was awful in retrospect, ECW would’ve been on at very very late night into early hours in the morning, but that was because of ECW’s excessive violence. So while ECW was a fantastic product for the fan, the product couldn’t make money in the long term, and that’s why they went bankrupt.

He isn't wrong in any way. ECW had by far even today I would say the most hardcore and loyal fan base. Events were so jam packed , the chants were amazing , the wrestling was by far the best and changed the business in ways many thought it wouldn't or wouldn't even last but it has. None of us will never forget the shit these guys put themselves through to give us a hell of a show. Now in day wrestling you get maybe 1-2 matches that people look forward to and the rest are lack luster. ECW .... I wanted to see every Raven match, every Sabu.... Super Crazy , Lance storm, Dean , Eddie, Sandman, Dreamer, Rhino, Shane, ect. Who the hell did we not want to see who was not that great where we went " fuck it this part sucks changing and coming back" that did not exist in ECW. Heyman is a true genius in what he created and its a shame it never continued.

I was born in 97 and started watching wrestling probably by 01-02. To this day i still watch ECW for so many reasons but the main reason was the fucking loyalty these crazy mfers had for the brand of ECW. I tear up when sandman goes into the crowd with a cigarette in his mouth a beer smashed over his forhead and a kendo stick in the other hand while the fans went psychotic and sang his theme like it was their last fucking day on earth. Why does it make me cry? The intensity of ECW gives me chills that my brain cannot even handle. The 90s was when i was born and i know i didnt grow up in the 90s but i am so goddamn grateful to live because of ECW. I was a kid with severe misbehavior and psychotic tendencies but when i watched my ECW dvds i would be so calm. My parents couldnt understand it. My dad saw how violent, intense, and brutal it was and when i was losing my temper he would scream at me to go watch ECW and shuttup. Id watch for hoursssss and i would calm down, do my homework and listen and follow rules. Why? Cause at a young age my father knew i already knew what loyalty was because of Paul Heyman and the ECW locker room. You will NEVERRRRR see anything even close to ECW ever again. If i had one wish and one wish only it would be to go to an ECW event and go insane with the crowd. I used to scream E C DUB!! So loud and the top of my lungs i would lose my voice. I have a very hard time in life with dealing with the fact that "all good things must come to an end" but not when it comes to E C FUCKIN W!! Paul Heyman thank you. You showed me as a child what loyalty is and gave me the ability to grow some serious balls along with self control and not to mention brains and the ability to say "fuck you" to people that are total scum. E C FUCKIN W FOR LIFE!!!

I fell out of wrestling around 2006, so I remember ECW One Night Stand 2005 and 2006 and that was when Vince McMahon PRESERVED the spirit of ECW before he demolished the brand. I still remember "If Cena Wins, We Riot." because I felt exactly the same way. John Cena was nothing but a Marky Mark impersonator, so I always hated him. I have the most nostalgia for Sabu and Rey Mysterio's match, Cena and RVD's match and Benoit and Eddie's match.

I started watching ECW in 1993 on sports channel Philadelphia and I was hooked it was awesome!! I still don’t understand why Paul would sell the company to Vince I’m 110% sure someone would have came along by now and invest big into ECW. It’s just ridiculous he sold it to Vince kills me.

Your absolutely right, the effects are certainly felt to this day. The wrestlers who put their bodies on the line by jumping from elevated heights of 20 feet or more through 6 tables and a ring of a fire with pandas juggling from the side to the beat of journey for Pennie’s on the dollar certainly remember the effects, I’m sure they still feel it to this day! Who profited from it? You think it was the wrestlers that profited the most, by destroying their bodies from these stupid backyard stunts?

Loved ECW and love/d Heyman's vision, just wish ECW could have paid their people for all the entertainment and putting their bodies on the line night after night. "Thanks for all your hard work" doesn't pay the rent, let alone the medical bills.

I remember when I first got back into wrestling around 2009/2010, I was horrified at how bad the product had gotten. I couldn't believe that something I had loved to death in my teen years ( I watched Smackdown! during the Ruthless Aggression years) and just had such a huge fall from grace. Then I heard about ECW, sought out the old house shows and some of Hardcore TV, and just lost myself in it. If it wasn't for ECW, I don't think I would have stayed such a big fan of wrestling. I don't think there's ever been another wrestling audience like the ECW Mutants. The Lucha Underground Believers got close, but that show unfortunately didn't end up having the legs to keep on. The AEW crowd is pretty devoted, but they don't have the absolutely _manic_ dedication and love of the Mutants (they don't even have an audience nickname). And WWE is crippled by being the only major English language promotion whose name doesn't end with W, making it impossible for the audience to chant it (can you imagine an arena full of people trying to chant "Dub dub EEE! Dub dub EEE! Dub dub EEE!"? It'd sound like an invasion of raver bats!)

ECW was both the best thing and the worst thing to ever happen to professional wrestling. It was the best thing because wrestling at the time was full of God awful ideas like pig farmers, ding dongs, Robo-Cop, and Black Scorpions, and ECW took what was a poorly made children's show and made it for adults. It introduced violence, blood, mature storylines, high flying moves, heavy metal music, cursing, the internet, and so many other things into wrestling that wrestling had never seen before, at least to the degree that ECW used it. It made wrestling fresh and exciting again. For those who experienced it live, ringside at every ECW Arena show like I did, we were more than just fans, we were part of a movement. We went to all the shows, we knew who the other fans were because we saw them every 3 weeks, we talked about ECW on Prodigy, we wore our ECW shirts everywhere we went and got excited if we saw someone else wearing one, be it in a mall, at a concert, at a ball game, or wherever. It was an amazing time. What made it the worst thing to ever happen to wrestling is that everyone tried to imitate it, and every imitation fell flat and just looked embarrassing. They took the parts that made ECW great and beat them into the ground by overdoing them, and doing them poorly. The long ass in ring promo's that inevitably lead to another wrestler's music hitting being done every single week. The overuse of table spots to the point where nobody blinks an eye when they see one anymore. The ridiculousness of dives and flips, a group of wrestlers just standing there on the outside with their arms stretched out waiting for another wrestler to dive on top of them, and then they all fall down even if they didn't come close to being hit by anyone, etc, etc, etc. I compare it to a classic rock band from the 70' s that are still touring today but no longer has any original members. You're seeing the same old songs, but they're just not anywhere near as good as when the original band members did it. And the new members don't have the talent or creativity to come up with anything good, so their new stuff is garbage that nobody wants to see. Young fans still enjoy wrestling because they didn't live through great wrestling from the past. Most older fans, like myself, gave up on wrestling long ago. It's just unwatchable to me. And that's a shame because I was as big of a wrestling fan as there was back then.

When I was in high school I had a classmate who was telling me about ecw and that I need to start watching. After watching barely Legal, I was hooked cause it was different than what wwe and wcw was doing at the time. Everyone brings up the violence but ecw also gave us eddie guerrero, rey mysterio, dean malenco, Chris benoit. Terry funk also helped ecw to get on the map

I hope to god Paul E sees this comment someday. It didnt matter if chequed cleared, it didnt matter when his probation made wrestlers dive off balconys. Im irish, and nobody know how hard how f#cking hard it was to get ECW in Ireland. My dad used to buy blank Video's and record every single ECW after his nightshift in tbe oil refinery. ECW was my show over the f#cking WWe AE. Sabu was my hero in the hero. Paul Hayman has no idea what he made my childhood.. i was the pnly kid in my area that knew what it was. ECW was my childhood. Thank you Paul, you've no idea how much your promotion made my childhood more violent and rememberable. Best f#cking years of my life. ECW forever

ECW was a product of it's time. I do not think it would survive in the modern age of wrestling. Look at Jon Moxley in AEW and his blading in every match he is in. He would have been embraced with open arms if he were in ECW, because that was their style back then. Yes there was CZW, IWA Mid-South, and Wrestling Society X while hardcore felt like cheap ripoffs of ECW at the end of the day. ECW was in the right place at the right time with the right people running the show. That is what made ECW so special at the end of the day.

People didn't know they weren't getting paid. Wrestlers resented and badmouthed him over this for years in plenty of interviews. He is a good liar. Apparebtly it is key to be successfull in a corporate enviroment.

I lost all respect for modern WWE fans when they did that trial of Sami Zayn and the fans chanting ECW at Paul Heyman and Heyman acknowledges them by using the phrase *"Guilty as charged!"* twice! and they didn't respond meaning they are Ignorant and have never watched ECW hardcore tv or any ECW show before It's not Just a catchy chant or weapons matches, they had actual wrestling matches, good ones and noone remembers that!

ECW's invasion could've been much more successful & memorable had they been booked like as close to an equal to wwe as it gets (at-least top-stars) [had ECW never been "little-brother booked".. If ECW invasion could've been led by Cactus Jack (someone who could believably simultaneously build-up ECW title credibility & be the WWE champion) & ECW top-guys were booked NOT-WEAK, it'd be far more memorable.. As Cactus Jack leads the charge for ECW; ECW's Simultaneously building-up Raven's legitimacy [never putting him in a skirt / don't change his grunge wcw/ecw look]. (Showcase him in programs w/ the likes of HBK, Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, HHH, Chris Jericho [the outcomes are-not Raven getting stomped out but legitimately being booked towards WWE champion / main event status); Frm which creatively Raven begins leading the ECW charge. W/RVD being built-up as the following ECW / WWE main-eventer. Tommy Dreamer / Sandman.. (Funk was probably too old by the time, i don't recall much of his presence. (The mid 90s i remember chainsaw charlie Funker, but i don't recall where he was or how he was doing during time of the invasion) ECW needed to bring substance into the main event scene. Rhyno was also cool, Tazz, Sabu, Tajiri (i just don't know much size came into play in limiting their position in the main-card) names such as those should've worked perfectly w/ guys like Benoit/Guerrero/Jericho/Mysterio nevertheless & they've each experienced world-title accolades; so no reason really why they couldn't. If done right a Raven / HBK program could've been fun (Maybe Raven briefly recruits Marty to assist him going over Michaels & creates a new 'Flock' just spitballing) Raven vs. Austin [be awesome if Pillman was alive through that to join this 'Flock'] If RVD is never booked like 'little brothered" & legit out the gates w/Austin & Angle. (had he gotten a lengthier program w/ HBK ; & Chris Jericho it would've been memorable.. Fast-forward abit & Sandman & DDP could've been 🔥(if WWE didn't alter DDP's gimmick too-much) Fast forward abit more & Tommy Dreamer could've been feuding w/ John Cena, [ideally Cena sees Dreamer as someone he can do business w/ & they have some memorable moments & matches. Where Dreamer isn't ALWAYS buried. (For ECW's sake) Maybe ECW recruits the likes of Mark Henry sooner & he's booked as their wrecking ball muscle. (Hall of Pain comes abit earlier & M. Henry extends his career's dominance) [Wrestling Machine Angle was a perfect fit for ECW, (intensity & early perc🔥) as was Austin (w/the prior-days connection to ecw how ecw helped austin develop character.. [if they could've been booked to-where their star didn't overshadow the others'; for ECW's sake in the long-haul big-picture] it'd have helped ECW remain memorable. Focus on creative pushes of Cactus Jack / Raven / RVD / Dreamer / Sandman, less focus on less serious gimmicks like balls mahoney/blue meany/etc. [if i'm forgetting anyone else believable frm ecw side that could've been a focal-point let me know fam, I'd be curious to see who if anyone slipped the mind too..)

Idk where K-Kwik (R-Truth) was at the time of the invasion. Ken Shamrock [another interesting name that could've helped ecw's 'invasion legacy'] i recall k-wik & road dogg on wwe tv prior to invasion if memory serves, & shortly after invasion he & shamrock are competing for the nwa world title in tna.. K-Kwik/R-Truth could've been an awesome (perfect) superstar to 'rep' ecw for that time frame & gotten some awesome programs between he & austin, also been built up as a world champion main-eventer, transitioning eras into programs w/cena eventually. (I know a random name though i was personally 'high-on' d-lo brown; he could've added something interesting if utilized properly) ECW should've never lost the ability to storyline 'sign free agents' 'frm the wwe' or recruit (at times they maybe over recruited, but as long as the former wwe superstar has some ecw connection &/or storyline(s) like raven's mentioned 'new flock additions' (it should've only helped ECW). Steven/William Regal is legitimately pushed in this universe & becomes ECW champion earlier, grit taken up a notch in ECW & while repping ecw w/ a new intensity Regal starts moving towards wwe title main event scene.. Lance Storm (alongside a Paul Heyman or someone like that, in legitimate programs with, michaels, jericho, austin, angle etc.. It's a shame Bret Hart was too injured to take part in the invasion. He too could've been someone who ecw side recruits (w/help of Lance Storm maybe, giving him the rub w/some cool points). Bret could've easily also been 'storyline disgruntled w/the wwe/&wcw's lack of faith in him' [or something like that] (The Hitman w/a renewed hardcore-intensity repping ecw for abit, possibly having a run (or multiple runs) w/ecw title himself through different times; could've been🔥🔥 (He could've eventually gone rogue/solo as-well, &'ve been considered 'the biggest free-agent independent of all the brand(s)' & be 'the hitman' that mixes it up w/all the above mentioned names).. I could see a 'storyline-disgruntled' Giant (aka Big Show) fortifying ECW's strength in quality-numbers. [Citing lack of wwe opportunity(ies) something to that effect]; (the wwe side has their giants w/taker / kane ; wcw side has theirs w/ kevin nash eventually show & ecw would be natural fit.. as mentioned at some point Henry would be cool for ecw. Wwe guys who were ecw guys, like Benoit, Tazz, Guerrero, Rhyno get recruited to ecw earlier possibly; or at-least to the ecw brand show. [Eddie v. Sabu program there🔥🔥] Maybe Rey bounces regularly between sd & ecw shows. (For some added 'pop') Also maybe a disgruntled (w/the WCW side): Finlay starts repping ECW. I could also see the ecw brands chaotically fighting & competing amongst its own ranks. [As would the wwe, & wcw; but when ecw did it, they brought it to the extreme] [If ecw & wcw could've gotten their own brand shows earlier alongside wwe's raw/sd (not in-place of) & it was done right [ecw/nor wcw nerfed in anyway(s), it could've extended the 'invasion(s)' & brought the overall quality to different/new heights. (Future drafts/Rumbles/Chambers/MITB(s)/S.Series/etc & whatnot could've been🔥) Its all fantasy booking. (Though alot could've been done differently. & bigger over arching storylines could've been extended in entertaining ways as-well. js

ECW's legacy: destroyed wrestling. I've stopped watching the product in 2001. Thanks to ECW and their degeneracy which oozed over to WCW and WWF.
