"a cutural cringe to a country which decided not to defend the malaysian peninsula, not to worry about singapore, not to give us our troops back to keep us free from japanese domination, this was a country that you people wedded yourself to. And even as they walked out on you and joined the common market, you were still looking for your MBE's and your Knighthoods and all the rest of the regalia that come with it. You would take Australia right back down the time tunnel to the cultural cringe where you've always come from"
@@trackdustyone day you people will realise that the Labor Party is called the Labor Party for a reason, it’s there for working people not middle class virtue signallers, that’s who the Greens are there for, Keating built a ladder for working people to increase their economic opportunities and the middle class left will never forgive him for helping working people improve their lot rather than keeping them down so you middle class twits could look down your noses at them and feel superior
This should be required viewing for anyone studying public speaking. Starts off quietly enough, sets the scene, injects a bit of humor, then ramps up the rhetoric, builds and builds and builds and finishes on an almighty crescendo. Glorious.
This is a prepared speech in response to a patsy question in the context of a wider republic/flag debate. So he has the room to study his points and prepare and inject his flair. Quite different to on the spot answers to opposition questions without notice. But still a very compelling speech. But couldn't help notice him criticizing women's rights in the 50s bearing in mind his 1969 maiden speech decried the entry of women into the workforce.
This is true patriotism. My kind of patriotism. Sticking it up the muppets that would kiss Britains feet, whilst appreciating all different races, incomes, genders and cultures within our country by celebrating their progress, and doing so with humour and wit. Marvellous.
I'd rate it as one of his best speeches: funny, passionate, builds momentum and articulates his core political vision in 6 minutes. Imagine a modern day politician (i.e., Shorten, Turnbull, Morrison, Abbott, etc) giving such a speech.
yellowpete79 Even after 3 years , this disgusting sniper Stephen Dwyer hasn't backed up his slanderous accusation with a response or any evidence . What a lowlife !!
Now labor don't give a shit about workers. They only care about woke politics and giving out handouts to people who don't deserve it. If only we had Keating in power today. Albo has got no solutions except putting people out of work by closing down coal fired industry and no solutions for things like pay rises for workers.
@@davidlp3019 Labor right does. Labor is split into 2 factions; far left and centre left. Centre left is Labor right, and they're not woke and they care about their workers. Even better, Labor right is the bigger of the 2 factions.
"I think the Member for Bennelong (Howard) is going to have a heart attack if his face goes any redder!" House Speaker. LMAO!!! Keating is only person that can make the entire Opposition Front Bench squirmed! We need someone like him more than ever
I'm a British conservative, but I'd listen to Paul Keating any time. Brilliant speaker and challenges one's views from a place of sharp intelligence. And he's extremely witty too.
Billy Hughes, who turned out to be a complete prick; then obviously Curtain and Ben Chifley. I wouldn't call Whitlam a genuine Australian, but he was a giant among pygmies. Hawke qualifies as a genuine Australian, then Keating. But since Keating we have two ridiculous anglophiles in Howard and Abbott. Gillard was Welsh and Rudd a pretentious wanker. Too early to tell with Turnbull; but to his credit, he did run the Republican movement.
notwithstanding your political persuasion, PJK was the last of the pollies who could stand up and debate using facts that just.... knew. he was informed about multiple topics and used every last shred of knowledge to combat his opponent. now all we have are soundbytes. it's fucking depressing.
Paul Keating, a man who was in politics before his time. His ideologies of how Australia should become more familiar with China and Indonesia are for more relevant today than they were 20 years ago. As an LNP supporter it would see strange for me to say that Paul Keating would be the best man to run the country at the moment. His vision and direction of where would see the country head is a far more promising and prosperous future than any of the potential leaders are giving us today. although yes he made a mistake in politics and left the Howard government in a 10 Billion dollar debt, by becoming more closely linked with the China and members of the Asia-Pacific region, his means would undoubtedly be justified and be more appealing to todays society instead of the more conservative Australia of the 1990's.
This guy is a legend. Can you imagine these turkeys like Abbott and Gillard debating this guy now. Say what you want, he still became the PM although he left school at 15. He crunched John Hewson(a pHD) and alexander downer nice and proper(and rightly so).
I used to love so much, watching little johnny howard, squirming on the opposition front bench, while Paul Keating ripped his liver out with an ice pick..............So much fun..........John Hewson seems to have turned into a decent bloke since he left politics.......as they do.
Paul Keating,,best parliamentary performer ever,,a true world class priminister, who showed great leadership & vision, set the platform for every government since,,John Martin Sydney
+Ca Ro He should have been put in cryogenics when he lost in '96...Revive him in 2016, goodbye Turnbull and good try Bill Shortern, but no thanks. Only one term or so in power but did he pack a punch in that brief time.
I would hate to get in his way😂. Glad The Boss showed parliament what a true leader thinking on his feet can offer the opposition. His lesson to them was nothing short of humiliation of who they still are...Loved it!
You may not like him but this country owes him a debt. If you know your economic history and not blindly follow your political leanings. You'll know what I mean. The tooth of envy is powerless here. Both parties now offer nothing. Nothing to propel this country forward..super should be 15%..but I digress. I'd take Keating seven days a week and twice on Sunday, compared to the sad individuals sitting on both sides of the house now. God have mercy.
***** Labor still seems to give somewhat of a shit, but they seem to be more capable of letting their policy ambitions get away from them. Still worlds better than Tony though.
***** Too many swinging voters in NSW & Victoria now, we know how any big ideas, be they left-wing or right-wing, scares them. About a third of voters in federal elections. Pathetic bunch!
This was the golden age of Australian politics. So much more flare and laughter going on and Pollies saying it as it is. Look at Question time now its so boring.
Ray Madigan what you may not know, is that Tony Abbott has conferred a knighthood on Prince Phillip. Don't bother to check your calendar, Ray,it's not April Fool's Day
Because people are fuking stupid and the media played its part, plain and simple, he ripped Howard to pieces in every single worthwhile debate but the media would distort the facts to suit their intentions, and we ended up with propaganda which vilified Keating, "Were in Recession", "Unemployment at record levels" etc and people fell for it. Not many had any idea what reforms were taking place to make Australia the progressive nation it was to become because they were too lazy to find out and just ate up all the bullshit that was delivered to them.
Keating was a visionary but he was never popular as PM like Hawke was. By 1995 Australia had solid GDP growth, inflation was under control, interest rates were relatively low and we had spectacular productivity growth. However unemployment was taking a while to catch up, and to many Australians it still felt like a recession. Keating's vision of Australia seemed very disconnected from their "kitchen table" concerns and Labor had been in power for 13 years. JWH exploited this disconnect very well when he took over and won a landslide victory by simply bashing Keating and making a few promises of the not-too-outlandish type that he couldn't keep. All JWH had to do was not make a large blunder (as he'd done in 1987 when his shadow budget had a massive mathematical error that totally discredited the Liberals as an alternative government) and he was home free.
I also think his vision was a little far forward than what the average Aussie could understand at the time. He knew what was coming with the China Boom and Asia in general and the right were shitting themselves that he would be too progressive and inclusive and 'socialist'. No doubt Murdoch smashed Keating leading up to that election.
Look at all those tools on the Opposition bench. Keating is AMAZING!!! Oh how we miss him. Sounds the same doesn't it as it is now. The LNP are still in the 1950's.
Mr Keating could string a together single a cogent, rational, & persuasive argument of 300 words & of the deliver them more convincingly and memorably than all of the focus group tested three word slogans this current crop of Tory vegetables could put together in hope to possibly achieve in a lifetime.
His comments about Britain dudding us repeatedly are spot on. But he omitted the fact that Britain had long been trying post-war to sell us her dodgy low quality factory goods, even to the extent of sending high level government missions to Australia "so sort them out" with lines like ''Britain knows best what is good for Britain, and knows what is best for you colonies too.''
How many of us are as ferociously Australian as Keating thinks we are? I am..but when the referendum about Republic comes up we remain apathetic so sad and to think we have progressive assisted dying leg I station which is regularly opposed in uk why can't we vote to leave the British empire??
What I will say though is that in the 1950s we fought aggression in Korea... Morrison has no balls or ticker..we should do more than play with ourselves.
Both sides had to keep it entertaining. We were in the thick of the worst recession in 25 years. Fortunately for Howard, the real estate cycle was back in full swing by 1996, fun stuff.
