god, has it really been this long since we had a treasurer who was so informed and learned that he or she could talk about it all off hand like this? PJK you were the last of the true politicians.
Prime Minister Paul Keating had a very astute understanding of Australia's economy at the time when it was needed. Introduced policy that has made Australia a better country - especially now. Economic management takes time before we see results. Instead of selling our national assets the deregulation of our financial sector was one perfect example.
PJK had intellect, charisma and a clear understanding of the economy and the economic data and made a mockery of the opposition. Great entertainment watching these videos. Our greatest politician
That's because they are not real conservatives but just a bunch of real estate investors and used car sales men trying to make $$$ for dodgy businesses who will return the big favour in return as election fund, dinner and donations lateron. Oh, I forgot that's what is capitalism in Straya mate.
Notice how when keating starts, the LNP are interjecting, yelling and cat calling. But when keating starts explaining how good the government policies are working, not a peep from them. He'd highlighted how inept the LNP were and they didn't have an argument against it.
"We thought tax scams were devious; We thought free beer was cheap; We thought Nine's news egregious; We thought it's sheep that bleat; We thought that school yard bullies all Get smacked right in the teeth; We thought on talk back minds were small - Then we met Peter Reith!" - TISM, 2Pot Screama
He was a snob but he had empathy and championed equality and that for a profitable economy you need to have policies in place that benefit everybody. Normally highly intelligent socially aware individuals vote Labor and support the Labor movement. Rich selfish individuals generally support the Coalition.
That turd just went to ground. A years wage just given to his son and friends. Yet this is the party that would go after "cheats", sending them threatening letters from debt collection agencies.
I remember the days when adults were in charge, at least on one side of the House. I now live in the UK and ever since Gordon Brown lost the 2010 election, we don't see anything like Keating's intelligence and command of detail; let alone his sense of humour. The current UK PM, the one with the toddler haircut, is so far out of his depth.
I dread to think what Australia might have been had Fraser not been tossed in 1983. Bill Hayden was right when he said a drover's dog could beat the Liberals, because they were holding the electorate by the throat.
It’s been a while since we had a politician that really gave a sh1t. PK might not have been perfect (and a tiny bit up himself), but he gave it a red hot go.
You really have to admire Paul Keatings vocabulary and how he uses it. I loved the reference to antediluvian as a description of the Liberals philosophy.
It's great to reflect on those times when Keating referred to his arch nemesis (the "member for Bennelong") whom we see sitting there in opposition interjecting, arguing, reacting and contemplating while Keating destroys the credibility of his party. The fact is that the direction that Australia is currently moving in is a direct legacy of the tussle between the vision of both of these men. At this stage the vision of latter seems to prevailing, at least in regard to the rise of the far right movement and neo-liberalism. In our lifetime it will be either Keating's Australia or the member for Bennelong's Australia.
@@Kajpaje - Giants used to walk among us. Now we’ve got the inane Scotty from marketing and his rabble. Sadly, Australians don’t even know their own history.
@@retroray58warby98 I know, such a sad state of affairs where an aggressive smirker and snarler is seen as competent. He's a shape-shifter of the highest order.
Well Keating actually got the point. 30 years of wealth creation without another recession. And a Labor party with affirmative action. A position we are still waiting for by the conservatives. Well bring it on 30+ years later with the adults back in town! God help us when they (the tories) give us the rot that they actually manage the economy better. God give us a break!
my unbias opinion is that peter reith is the goat of gov full stop. Even though he has had multiple strokes and cant really write he should definitely consider a return.
