Contrary to what some have written, this is not narcissism, it's just confidence, talent and decades of experience. Almost nobody in the world could stand up in front of a live audience and a film crew and pull this off. Paul's just damn good, and he knows it.
@@yoya4766 Yeah it took him decades to figure out the complex counterpoints on some tunes from Abby Road that had never been done live because of them. But at a time when he could be lax he did it anyway and performed them.
Anyone who has taught a class knows the thought, planning and preparation that goes into something like this - you can't just wing it if it's to come off successfully.
It feels like Paul has been trying to document and hand over as much as he can before he goes: The Lyrics book, this video, more music, Get Back, the photography, touring, Glastonbury, now another Beatles song. What a gift and legacy. I feel so grateful but it also breaks my heart.
I couldn't agree more. I felt this more and more over the past couple of years. It's wonderful to discover all these things he's leaving, but also heartbreaking to see him slowly stepping away. That really hit home with the recent release of 'Now and Then'. History will remember him well simply because he's one of the greatest cultural figures of this or any age. But it will also remember him even better as he's now written, curated and shaped that history. He's leaving behind a treasure trove for future musicologists, academics, fans, and the musicians of the future to discover, learn from and maybe even one day emulate...
but this way when he still have died hair, around his 70 something right? i feel so honoured to be from the Beatles century and paul still on at my maturity. but we all will face when he leaves but i wish he would be imortal. for me, he is God on earth. John was jeses, George San Francis and Ringo, Richard Starkey!

I hope Paul McCartney gets to live to see the day where we can extend life times he would just keep making beautiful music it’s so amazing how he doesn’t stop experimenting but you can tell a Paul McCartney song when you hear a Paul McCartney song
@@excel3975 - Right, hundreds of people are involved in a conspiracy for no reason whatsoever. They are taking it to their graves for literally no reason at all. This guy isn't Paul but wrote all these amazing songs and wants no credit. And the dead Paul's family are fine with all his royalties going to this imposter. Seriously pal if you believe that conspiracy you have literally no common sense.
If all this man did in his entire life was write "Jenny Wren" he would've accomplished more than 99% of the musicians on the planet. The man is a genius. Music like his makes me so happy to be alive during the time I am.
+Walter Butler They often wrote together in hotel rooms early on or at each others home (together they wrote 300 songs that were thrown away as not good enough). "One after 909" is one that survived that early period. Later they mostly wrote alone but would get suggestions from each other or even a middle 8 bars. George might even throw in some lyrics and the memorable hook. When there is nobody to say no to Paul the result is often questionable, IMO. :)
It can't be said enough how simply amazing Paul is. Narcissistic--NO; diva--NO! He's got such a native talent and puts out from his heart. Plus, he's also very willing to praise other people in his field, which he is a master of, is humble and humorous besides. He opened a school for the arts, so others can learn to hone their interests and gifts: LIPA, which is Not named after him. Loves life, people, and creatures on this jewel of a planet. May he keep putting out and bringing enjoyment, I hope!! May he also enjoy his 80th birthday this year. Luv ya!
certainly an amazing human being. Not only for his Beatles' life and solo career but for his incredible balance physically, mentally and emotionally. The man always rose again and kept a cheerful spirit. Live that long under the chaos that he did and of course losing wives and dear friends and fortunes and always bouncing back and keeping his original spirit. Lovely Englishman. Thank you for your huge contribution to the human race, Sir Paul McCartney.
You expressed, beautifully what an inspiration Paul is ! When I get down I think of him and how well he has handled all that has been thrown during his entire life !
@@robertguth6560 And to go one step further, him, being born just in the final few years of the near annihilation of Britain in WW2, The Brits of that era were never downtrodden. Seriously outmatched in supplies and armaments, the Brits forged ahead armed with incredible spirit and even humor in the face of hopelessness. With a name like "Angelo," I am obviously not a Brit, but I have always admired their courage, wit, charm and humor in all situations. Like James Bond, his confidence is always more magnanimous than whatever the devil throws at him. Paul, certainly is of that ilk. Yes, to have him on earth is truly a Blessing.
It is just a saying when you mean you're glad that you were alive at the time it was happening but the real question is that the real Paul McCartney because you have to go back and look it up about how Paul McCartney died in a car wreck earlier in her career and they replaced him with a Canadian impersonator and if you're interested you can look it up and there are hints of it on all of their album covers
Poor Paul can't get a break no matter what he does. If he does a one man show like this; he's indulgent, if he sits at home; he's a Howard Hughes hermit. Heck, some people don't believe he's really himself. But somehow he manages to stow that BS and just make music...and he's really super good at it.
Precisely. I have honestly no idea how someone could be hating on this and I think it's in very bad taste to call this self-indulgent or egotistical. Paul McCartney is old as hell and might as well sit at home and watch tv all day. But he does all these people a favour by working his ass off and putting this entire show together. There are so many people interested and even obsessed by the Beatles, and in this show he kind of shows you how his songs are made and give us an inside peek in the studio, so to speak. It's all very personal and the way he involves the crowd makes you feel very close to the man. Really cool of him to do something like this.
Agree completely. The guy doesn't need and hasn't had the need to do anything for decades but he does it because he can and he loves doing it, and even better, he's good at it. I think some still blame him for the breakup of the Beatles when in reality it was just time for that to happen.
TheSeeker1960 Right. I don't know who said it, but "Bands break up." They were all growing into different directions. I'm surprised they incorporated so many styles during their time and still kept a lid on any differences...there's only a handful of bands who've done it and still less who are still doing it.
***** I haven't met anyone who's been in the entertainment business who doesn't have a health ego...I would say Lennon had one too. I interviewed actor Gary Lockwood who also played football for UCLA. He said that acting is like being in sports, you have to have a good ego...you have to feel you are the best when you go on the field, 'cause everyone else is taking the same attitude. If I were McCartney, I'd have the credits reflect who really wrote the songs-whether is was he, Lennon, or Harrison. John, if he were alive today, might not object. You know John's demos, so you must be a large Lennon fan, but are you saying Lennon couldn't be an asshole at all?
Since that horrible night when John was taken from his friends and loved ones, and from the world, Sir Paul has carried the tremendous weight of The Beatles on his shoulders, with great grace and dignity and class. Had John lived we may well have had a new Beatles album (or two), but Paul stepped up to the plate and has been hitting home runs ever since! Many people are given the title "genius," who really aren't, but Paul McCartney truly is a genius, hands down! The Beatles were the first and the best, and the fact that the sheer variety and volume of music they created is still being listened to and talked about, all these decades later, just proves that point. Long live the greatest band in the history of rock, long live The Beatles! ✌🏼&❤️
Both Ringo and George were also Beatles members and carried the weight until the passing of George, Ringo and Paul played together on Helter Skelter. The Beatles knew they had to split, the one that took it the hardest was Ringo.... But they all grew into their own Strawberry fields including John before he was shot. So you may think Paul carried the weight but it was shared between all of them. And personally Ringo was there on Georges death bed and was also there for Yoko when John was killed. Ringo was more of a Beatle than any of the other members.... John Lennon even stated Ringo was the Heart of them
@@twitch7334 Ringo was not at George's death bed; that intimate time was shared only by Olivia, Dhani and two chanting gurus . . . and George died without a publicity circus because Paul offered him the use of his Beverly Hills mansion, at 9536 Heather Road. ... and "was more of a Beatle than any of the other members" doesn't mean anything. There is no "Beatle" without all four of them.
I love seeing Paul get choked up at the beginning as he recalls John, George, and Ringo in the studio with him. Abbey Road is a truly mystical studio with the legendary music that was created there.

Mozart? Hell, no. Macca exercised no quality control over his own solo career. He had that pushback when with the Beatles. He should have released half the number of records post 1970 and put only his good stuff out to the public.
This man wrote Yesterday, Michelle, Fool On The Hill, Eleanor Rigby, Golden Slumbers, Helter Skelter & The Long And Winding Road, just for a start. He has the right to do WHATEVER THE FU*K HE WANTS.
It is incredible that he is still fully engaged, making music, recording, communicating with his audience. Most people at his level would just sit back and enjoy their millions but he is a true artist so he keeps on creating music. I have heard him speak so often about contemporary music. He is interested in what young people do and he is not lost in nostalgia and trying to prop up is reputation like so many of his generation. He is an inspiring lifetime musician and artist. His songs have been in my life every decade. I have endless respect for him.
I think of all Beatles, Paul was/is most productive, creative and made more music, then George then John etc... He's a gifted/talented, wonderful n a blessed man. 1 in billions really. Thank you for sharing this lovely video .
BTW, the story of Paul getting killed started because he let this guy take his ( unique, sports) car to wash it. The guy unfortunately had a fatal accident. A friend of Paul (or related to the band) happened to pass by the scene of that accident and thought Paul was driving...he was shocked until he saw Paul at the studio then found out what really happened but I guess he had told some people about that wreck ( crash) ...so that's how the rumor started. I think Paul n others thought of it as funny so they started hinting ( in songs, photos etc.) as if Paul was really dead ...( we've all done crazy things for fun in our youth)... But some ppl still believe that (false) tale ... This is really Paul McCartney. No double no conspiracies,..no bs, long live Paul .
This man is a freak of nature I mean he's over 70 years old and he sounds incredible and plays perfectly there is no way any human being on earth can be this talented!!! just... whoah
I am less than two months younger than Paul. At the time, in the Sixties, I didn't appreciate him. I'd been brought up on Swing and Buddy Holly. Now, much later, I recognize that he with John, were the greatest song writers of the Twentieth Century. He and The Beatles did indeed change the world.
I agree: Lennon and Mccartney are the greatest songwriting duo of the 20th century. Two other phenomenal songwriting duos come to mind: George and Ira Gershwin and Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus. Just wow!!!
As I have gotten older, my appreciation for Paul continues to grow, he doesn't loaf around and gets to work. He knows his market and produces an exceptional product for them
He's a great musician of course but he's almost sickening to listen to talking. He's embarrassingly arrogant and he doesn't know he can't sing outside his range.
@@johnroff9869 how many number 1 hits and albums have you had then? As an occasional band singer I would be happy to be as good as Macca is at his worst.
Yes he should....Maybe Kanye can make him relevant and give him career advice and teach him songwriting With Kanye's help he migh make a hit..........ROFL!!!
so sad that there only two left one killed by a lunatic, the beatle with the most Peacefull mind and sadly George, the quiet Beatle I think there would be some Reunions now when John and Geaorge would have lived...
He’s still writing great songs. One of the most Amazing Figures of our times. I went through a long period of not really liking him all that much but I’ve come to appreciate him again here later in life. I mean; he’s written several Masterful CLASSICAL PIECES recently too. And the one I heard was GOOD.! Name me ONE rock musician from the past 50 years who has done THAT.
I never had a great urge to see Paul live, thinking of myself as more of a “John” man. Then I saw Paul live at Desert Trip. Who was I kidding? Those years, the most important
What a magnificent rendition of Lady Madonna. If anyone ever doubted McCartney!s genius, they really should see this. He is a top performer with an ability to turn it on anywhere, in front of anyone, in his own time, without the slightest hint of nerves. If music were a sport, he'd be a multiple world champion…
Wow, the small pause he does at talking about all his former bandmates' location in the studio... just precious, the idea that he can go back to it after all these years knowing what once was and having lost two of his good friends, it's just incredible that he can keep it all together.
My God, all this and he barely breaks a sweat, I've loved him and the Beatles all my adult life and even as a kid in the 60's, so glad I stumbled across this 16 year old video, can't believe I haven't come across this before now. It will be watched regularly from now on.
I’ve just caught up with this, and I loved every minute of it. I could watch Paul making music all day, and to think of all that great Beatles music being made in that very room is just mind blowing!
I had the pleasure of attending a lecture at Abbey Road last year. Just to be in that room (Studio 2 I think it is) was amazing. Nevermind Paul playing live!
@@Hikaridojodoshinokai You are incorrect. He definitely gave a short demo of playing a standard strung right-handed guitar in his left handed orientation i.e. upside down. Some left handed players do this all the time but most restring the guitar (like McCartney) so that the low E is at the top in a mirror image to normal right-handed guitar playing. [In fact quite a few left-handed guitar players (including me) play entirely in the right-handed style... we just like the challenge ... well, not really, we just weren't clever enough to adapt a guitar for proper left handed playing when we first picked up the instrument!]
Paul is my favorite musician of all time, with or without the Beatles. He does it all, plays guitar, piano, bass, sings better than the best of them, has always composed wonderful compositions, whistles, is funny and a great guy.
people can learn to play all those instruments and even more and technically better than Paul, what nobody will ever learn is composing like he does, that is pure talent that only happens every couple of centuries.
Marvin Flyer Nice. I can never pick a favourite. The Beatles was a rare combination of three true artists coming together, backed by a fun-loving regular (and very lucky) guy. John was a genius in his own right. George was a genius in his own right. Paul still is a genius in his own right. … And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.
In 'Heartbreak Hotel', Paul actually approximates the slap-back echo that Elvis used, with just his voice. Now THAT'S amazing. The guy is just a juggernaut of talent.
It’s always fascinating to see a superstar get excited over their idols and inspiration. They were excited over them as a kid and at 60 or more they’re still excited by them even if they surpass them. Such was the case with Keith Richard doing a special with Chuck Berry years ago, He was so far ahead of Chuck Berry that they could hardly do anything. Chuck Berry played all over the world like a traveling gambler while Keith Richard was involved in huge, huge concert extravaganzas.
I found it impossible to watch this video without a smile on my face. McCartney, the ultimate performer, is acutely aware of his and the band's legacy. He is ideally suited for this small venue, solo performance that weaves musical history into the present in such an engaging way. Regardless of your view of the Beatles, or whether the sum was greater than the parts, you come away from this video just liking the guy and respecting him for what he is: The genuine article.
It amazes me that nobody said a single word when he brought out the Hofner Bass and Epiphone Casino.. Those instruments have a legendary status of their own!!!
Exactly! I mean Bill Blacks standup double bass got oohs and ahhs and I can see that.. Being part of the Elvis trio and all. But this is The Beatles pulse here! The Beatles Gear put it best that this guitar (Paul's bass) and John's original Rickenbacker were the most significant guitars!!! :-D
You betcha! I can see why too. I have a Casino and they are a true joy to play! Paul himself said "If I could choose one electric guitar, it would be this!"
This was great. Even the equipment; his Hoffner bass, Elvis's bands double bass (and the image of it strapped to their car), the mixing deck, the harmonium and just the Abbey Road studio...... I have to admit I view them with almost religious awe, such relics of music history! That moment when Paul played the beginning of Strawberry Fields on that incredible 'synthesiser' was incredible.
I am just now seeing this. What a rare treat to watch Sir Paul performing as if we were in his studio with him as if he were addressing a few friends. I sort of feel like I was there. A magical performer.
Wow! To be in the actual studio, watching Paul play, and create in front of that audience was a rare privilege for those lucky enough to be invited to that! I barely felt 'worthy' of even watching the recording of that performance!
The first-ever artist to perform on MTV Unplugged was Sir Paul. I remember seeing it when it first aired. He's just so comfortable in front of a live audience, especially in an intimate setting. In concert, he's amazing. as well. He can do it all. We're lucky to be able to say, we saw him.
in 1961.. 62 maybe.. my family was living in Germany.. on an American army base.. my mom started telling me how cute those British boys were with their shaggy hair. .. I was 8.. started looking around and couldn't find any boys with shaggy hair.. we were listening to radio Luxembourg and they were playing some of the first Beatles songs... my guess it was this kid she was talking about.. thanks for sharing this with me.. truly an excellent recording of one of my favorite people in the whole World muchas gracias 🙏🏼✌️🙏🏼
I love how Paul is showing us how everything was made. As a teenager in the late 60s and 70s I imagined it so differently. Somehow watching these things brings my experiences at that time full circle. It means a lot that he is doing this for us- and having fun doing it : )
Nobody....and I mean NOBODY can do what this guy does. You cut this guy and he bleeds songwriting that stands for decades and decades to come. Try to write just ONE song that will last as long as the hundreds of songs this guy has written. When he passes the world will plunge into sadness and despair so we’ll just enjoy him and his talent while we can. AMAZING!
there are a few people that are just like this, but doesnt show it, get it ? thats how music genius have been separated from the industry, a true pasion of life.
Such a cheerful person he is.. god bless him with good health and more years to live. He and the Beatles brought so much joy in my life.. P.S - this video turned my bad day into a good one.. Long live rock n roll long live Sir James Paul McCartney
Paul is the greatest person alive. After brilliant song after brilliant song, at 44 minutes in with “Got a Feeling" this performance transcends. Thank you Paul for providing us 50 years of joy.
Since I was 11 years of age Paul McCartney has rocked my world. He is absolutely brilliant and has enhanced my life for half a century in this world. His humility is astonishing given the wealth of talent and genious he has.I'm delighted that he was able to share it with us and enhance his legacy before his mortal life is over. I only wish we could have had the same bounty with John. Maybe in the next world,John is waiting for his brother Paul and those of us that appreciate their incredible gifts, blessing us beyond our imaginations and we will all shine on ! Thank you Sir Paul. What wonderful memories! I saw the Beatles twice. The 1st time in Atlanta the last time in NY at Shea.I've been around the world and been blessed with many things but nothing can compare with entering the teenage years with the Beatles ! That is what I call blessed indulgence from heaven!
You are an American and you love Beatles so much, that's an incredible thing that can prove their greatness. I love them, of course because of their genius in music, but more because I can always recall something every time i listen to them.Just think of the old days...some kind of, you know, longing for my young age, those girls, and my attitude towards life... everything seems to have changed, but this one can always drag me back to the glorious past...
During one interview in 1964, John was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world and he replied that he wasn't even the best drummer in The Beatles. He was referring to Paul.
@@Jantonov1, I never said they didn't. He simply acknowledged the fact that McCartney is/was the most versatile instrumentalist in the band. He said it in August of 1966.
He's not only an incredible singer and songwriter he's so amazing entertaining the crowd with his music, stories, and giving background history of him and John and the Beatles. His fond memories with meeting John and playing music with him brings tears to his eyes and to me it seems he's having a difficult time holding back the tears. He's a beautiful singer and his songwriting is still wonderful to listen to. Glad he's still with us and can entertain us. Thanks for sharing this video.
It takes tons of playing out to be comfortable and easy with it. Once you are, it’s a blast to connect! Paul is like a “Mentor Musician.” He’s the one to follow....what an inspiring man! So creative, amazing!!
He looks a lot like my older brother, Vernon.I swear I have ancestry in a tree that branches out close to my love of music and the Beatles.I cant imagine my life or any life without there music it's a gift from from Jesus I cry now hearing there music . If I new then what I know now. Am happy to see all the Right On Comments from all you-- Paul opens up a bit in this program 80 or 100 Dammit Paul PLAY THAT Electric guitar Please it's time to rip it up bro stop holding yourself down. Well can I just say I have no musical background and I've learned more about the musical process in 1 hour than I ever had in 3 years worth of school. Thank you Paul.
Definitely seems like one of those musicians you'd like to hang out with casually at a cafe or restaurant & just chill & talk.... he seems like such a nice humble guy.
Nothing short of breathless!! A great honor to be alive on the earth to appreciate such warm and wonderful gifts!! Thank you so very very much, Sir Paul!!
He’a probably the biggest musical mind in contemporary music (20th an 21th Centuries) in terms of his melodic approach to composition and musical virtuosity. Thanks a lot Paul.
I recall watching this live in the UK and it was a very special evening where so many of us were at home together, everyone talked about it, it seems like 80% of the UK was watching it. What I loved and still love on a repeat is seeing how much Paul loves this, how he never lost his interest, curiosity, he genuinely loved this, producing, playing with sounds. It's a good thing!
My whole life I thought of what I would say to him if I met him. How did you play this bass line, how did you come up with so many great songs, melodies, lyrics etc... Now I just want to say thank you Sir Paul. I love you yeah, yeah, yeah.
Paul McCartney is a talent you will rarely if ever see. He is perfection unsurpassed in his melodic and lyrical compositions and especially in his younger years as a vocalist. The volume of masterpiece compositions is incredible.
