Once a mystery of who did the backing vocals due to different recollections of events, Geoff Emerick stated that McCartney didn't sing on the choruses. However everything Geoff Emerick says should be taken with a grain of salt. Paul said that they didn't record harmony vocals like they used to. Some taking this as meaning he didn't do any harmony vocals, but he most likely meant they just didn't do it at the same time. Paul most likely recorded these harmony vocals later. It is clear that Paul did indeed provide backing vocals on Come Together. Being only during three verses and the Come Togethers in the chorus, with Lennon providing the rest himself.
Another little video related to the Beatles.

The sound of these two singing together is deep in the memory core of many many boomers. Abbey Road was one of the last times they did. Don’t miss Mean Mr mustard either.

Its crazy but after hearing this in isolation.... that is 100% without a doubt, Paul singing the harmony with John... such incredible stuff for a album that ended it all

For decades, I always assumed it was Paul. I never knew there was even a debate about it until two minutes ago. What's next? People claiming Paul died in the sixties? Oh, wait...

The belief that these weren't Paul's comes mainly from Goeff Emerick and a Paul quote. Paul said in 1970 that, "Even on Abbey Road we don’t do harmonies like we used to. I think it's sad. On Come Together I would have liked to have sung harmony with John, and I think he would have liked me to. But I was too embarrassed to ask him. And I don’t work to the best of my abilities in that situation." Which combined with that Emerick said convinced people that Paul didn't provide backing vocals. Although the real proof is in the recording where Paul clearly did, but that wasn't 100% obvious in the original stereo mix.

This is what I don’t get, emorick says in his book that paul did not sing backup on this song per John’s directive. But if this recording is authentic then Paul is definitely singing backup on the song

Emerick can be unreliable in his narratives. As the saying goes there are three sides to a story, your story, the other person's story, and the truth. Although what he says should still be in consideration it shouldn't be taken at face value as 100% the truth. Case in point these backing vocals which are 100% authentic being isolated from the 7.1 mix of Come Together.

There's hardly any word of authentic dialogue in that fairy-tale book, it's filled with false and made-up stories! Like Blackbird had been recorded outside on the roof!! Insane!

Geoff Emerick is indeed a witness to the events first hand but his book is not a 100% correct retelling of what went down in sessions. It's a memoir that blends what actually happened, what he incorrectly remembered as happening, his own opinions, and what he wants people to think happened. Everything in that book should not be taken as absolute fact as everyone's memory of what happened decades ago are not going to be 100% correct. By all accounts since then according to multiple sources including the 2019 Abbey Road booklet it states that Paul did indeed provide backing vocals.

@AI Covers by Dhalius Sure John might have been able to pull out his best Paul impression but that is just not the case here.

@AI Covers by Dhalius Paul said, "Even on Abbey Road we don’t do harmonies like we used to. I think it's sad. On Come Together I would have liked to have sung harmony with John, and I think he would have liked me to. But I was too embarrassed to ask him. And I don’t work to the best of my abilities in that situation." This was often interpreted as him saying he didn't do harmonies at all, but the other more reasonable interpretation is that they just didn't do the harmonies together, and honestly that statement itself is stretching it a little as all throughout the Abbey Road sessions they did plenty of harmonies together. Weather that be all three of them on songs like Because or only Paul and George on songs like Something or Here Comes the Sun. They may say this and that but the reality is Paul did indeed provide backing vocals on Come Together. They could imitate each others voices to a certain extent but not this far. It is obvious when John does his own backing vocals as his voice has a tone to it that Paul doesn't have. TLDR: that statement Paul made is misinterpreted
