With regards to changing some of the song credits to McCartney/Lennon, he did this on the Wings Over America release and John didn't feel the need to comment on it then so I don't really see the issue with it now. It really is such a small, insignificant change that there's no need to get annoyed by it. You can always scribble it out and write Lennon & McCartney if it annoys you that much. The 'A Day in the Life' & 'Who broke up The Beatles' "controversies" are non-starters and are whipped up by the press who don't know better, and fans who should do. I got my copy yesterday, and had a huge smile on my face as I was flicking through and seeing what treasure await and can't wait to dive in.

Paul McCartney, the genius musical Swiss-knife, has every right to want to put his name first. His name actually was originally listed first. The Beatles packed 30+ years worth of great albums into 8 years mostly because of Paul-per interviews from Ringo and John. He did it all, phenomenal versatile lyricist and composer, world class versatile singer, brilliant versatile musician; he has signature lead guitar licks (Taxman, Paperback Writer, I’m Only Sleeping, Good Morning, The End), signature piano (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Lady Madonna), signature drumming (played drums on Dear Prudence, wrote part of the the drum patter on Ticket to Ride), celebrated bassist, played flute and mellotron on Fool On The Hill and Strawberry Fields Forever. He was also the visionary and adult in the room. His bandmates couldn’t have been better-John, George and Ringo were all great, hence The Beatles. Ringo still has IT in spades-great song man and musician.

@HEADLINEZOO

@@davidrowe7967 Bob Dylan said “Paul McCartney is the only one who truly amazes me.” Paul Simon placed McCartney above John Lennon, Bob Dylan and himself as a songwriter; said he was in the very top tier and rated the aforementioned trio one tier below. I love Dylan but he nor anyone else not named Paul McCartney was capable of writing the words AND music to “She’s Leaving Home” and all the music and 95% of the lyrics to “Eleanor Rigby. Dylan doesn’t get enough credit for how good he is musically or what a great versatile singer he is.

I'm just starting to get into book (only up to And I Love Her at the moment) but loving it already. Going to be a long read! 😀. I noticed that most Beatles songs are credited as Paul McCartney and John Lennon. The fact that A Day In The Life is listed as John Lennon and Paul McCartney would indicate to me that Paul accepts it's a mainly John song and isn't trying to steal credit away from John.

@@MeanMrMayo And yet you falsely accused him of claiming credit on Day in the Life, based on some fake headlines. He NEVER said that. His book doesn't say that. And those false stories have been deleted and pulled from various news sites. Yet you and others jumped on McCartney for headlines he did not write. I've seen all sorts of awful comments attacking Paul for something he did not say. For weeks McCartney has had to sit quietly while Sean Lennon and the Lennon estate re-promoted Imagine and rubbed HDYS in Paul's face -- again. Yet Paul took it and even retweeted promotions of the Imagine album! And yet, not a word from them promoting Paul's new book and they've said nothing while Lennon fanatics attacked Paul for fake stories about something Paul NEVER said. Appalling treatment of a 79-year-old legend.

@MeanMrMayo 2 года назад
@@denisemagner3672 Nope, I knew that Paul was not going to claim that he alone wrote A DAY IN THE LIFE. That's ridiculous, and I would have never believed that click bait headline all on its own. However, I was consistent that Paul changed his 2021 view of ADITL from what he'd already stated in a 1997 bio. Also, the fabrication regarding TOO MANY PEOPLE is valid as I mentioned in my other video. But at the end of the day I had a change of mind and happily bought the book. I am embracing it and celebrating Paul McCartney's great songs. That's what matters (though now I've learned the new book has Paul's name first for main writer on TICKET TO RIDE!? ...hmmmm).

@denisemagner3672 2 года назад
@@MeanMrMayo We don't know what songs Paul was referring to so you can't really state with any accuracy that he was 'fabricating' anything about the songs John wrote about Paul before Too Many People. Perhaps Paul was referring to Come Together, a song that some people think is about the Beatles, and that Paul markedly helped to improve despite the verse that is allegedly about him ('got to be good looking cuz he's so hard to see') in the midst of the Klein feud. At any rate, good for you for changing your mind on the book. It's a terrific collection and in reading it, I find I sometimes agree with Paul and sometimes I don't. And that's OK.
@MeanMrMayo
@MeanMrMayo 2 года назад
@Martin McGrath ..Paul said in the book (not a false article online, but it's in the book) that John was firing missiles at Paul in 1 or 2 songs, and so Paul decided to fire his own missile with TOO MANY PEOPLE. I think Paul was reacting more to missiles John was launching in interviews around that time, but it is inaccurate that John attacked Paul on record first - it was Paul who went that route.

All "revisionist" drama aside, I think that book is well worth reading because McCartney is actually a really good lyricist in my opinion. He's not the most intellectual oder poetic but his lyrics are very poignant and heartfelt. For example: "Give Ireland back to the Irish - don't make them have to take it away" Very simple, but very powerful.

@Mean Mr Mayo - I respectfully disagree with some of your views on this book however, everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I respect yours. The only thing I agreed with is, I wished someone at MPL had edited the book and done some proper research and “fact checking”, in terms of timelines of events, perfect example that you mentioned “Too Many People”. It would have been great if they employed someone like Mark Lewisohn to go over it with a fine tooth comb. I think right up until Lennon’s passing in 1980, I don’t think even John’s memories on who wrote what in the L&M songwriting partnership were 100% correct, there were contradictions back then. I am concerned that the casual Beatles/McCartney fan or reader might take every word in the book as gospel. I just hope that people are smart enough to take that into consideration. With anything that’s autobiographical, you gotta take it with a grain of salt. I’m more interested in Paul’s thoughts and feelings about the songs, rather than who wrote what. I probably would have also preferred if he just stuck with Wings and Solo lyrics however, as others have pointed out and as the publishers would be thinking, it wouldn’t sell as well without some Beatles songs in there. I also think with McCartney smoking weed most of his life, combined with his age, surely that would have some sort of effect on his memories being accurate and reliable? I’m not trying to make excuses for the man, just trying to understand why. I personally don’t think he’s intentionally trying to revise history. I think the tabloid media are trying to spin it that way. Anyway, I’m happy you ended up buying this book and hope you enjoy it :) Peace & love ✌🏻

There are certainly groups or individuals out there that put-down Paul's contribution to the Beatles and music in general. Some of the comments can be quite nasty. To be rights Joe it’s your collection - you should curate it how you see fit. Your honesty with us here is refreshing and nice, and I honestly can’t blame you for pulling the trigger and getting this beautiful looking piece. I’m still seriously on the fence about this myself, for the reasons you listed in your original video and this one right here. If only Lennon was still with us to give his side to things, it would feel like there’s more of a balance to things - perhaps he may have given his friend the song credits the way he wants them. But this sort of thing being done without him being alive, and the altering of narratives, no matter how slight they may be does leave a sour taste in my mouth. All that being said - it’s a beautiful looking set and is an important piece in The Beatles story. From what I have seen there is lovely insight from Paul, and Paul truly cares about the songs he is writing about - they’re very much a part of him. I do feel lucky to be alive where Paul is gladly catering to us Beatles fans and embraces that part of his life as much as he seems to. I think for this one I may leave it up to Santa to decide if he wants to treat me or not this year. It’s a hard call to make.

Glad you changed your mind. As I opened my copy today, and began the huge journey of taking it all in, I was going to encourage you to think again. It is a gorgeous compendium. I did flip through to see how he attributed the authorship and to some degree, I accept your point. Yet, I also don't fault him for wanting accurate attribution. These things are important to artists. The songwriting attribution began when they were eager lads and John was the leader. We all know the rest of the songwriting story. He wants his primary role on his songs known as his. Maybe, as an amateur songwriter, I have a particular view of that. And as for the accuracy of his memory - any autobiography of any famed person always kicks up these disputes. That's what historians are for - clarifying and further refrackting "the truth." So, enjoy the book with all its imperfections!

I think it will give you a deeper insight in Pauls way of thinking. And it is quite interesting that Paul focuses on his lyrics as he is seen as a melody man. But he is quite capable of writing beautiful lyrics when he wants to. I think John was a better lyricist overall, but "Calico skies" like you mentioned has got really good lyrics. I also think "Here, there and everywhere" and especially "For no one" are very well crafted both lyrically and musically. "Let it be" and "Blackbird" are two other great examples.

I think it's easy to bash Macca for being a lame lyricist at times, and boy some of them really do make me feel like a dustbin lid (womp wooooomp). But if I'm honest, I think there are plenty that are really good. Some of them are so burned into our brain that we gloss over them, but I even think lines like well the rain exploded with a mighty crash as we fell into the sun, are pretty good. Plus lyrics for Wanderlust .... Back on my feet .... anyway, just a thought.

And there was something like, 'Will The Beatles get back together again?' ... and I sort of said, 'No, I don't think so” …. Paul kind of leaves out the part where he wrote that dang questionnaire himself that got included with McCartney I!! Anyway, just reminded me of the points you were making

Hi Joe, didn't see your video indicating you weren't going to get the book.. but I do think you have quite reasonably justified (not that you really need to) your decision.. For me, there are two very solid reasons you should have it. Primarily all the Beatle related bits you already have, this must surely go down as a significant tome from one who was in the eye of the storm along with the rest of his catalogue in the next 50 years!! (50 - jeez!) Secondly, hosting that show justifies your change of heart as you need first hand knowledge of elements within.. No need to apologise.. Keep up the good work 👏

Hi Joe. I was critical of your position. But exactly as you say everyone has the right to their own opinion. I’ve ordered my copy - and I’m sure it won’t be perfect - but I’m glad you have yours. Love your videos and it’s great to have these debates. Also I think very impressive of you to publicly change your view.

Dear Joe, I‘m really relieved with your decision to get this important book in the end. I wait on my preordered English edition for arrival here in Germany with pure joy. My anticipation of this book was overshadowed the last days after listening to your latest post on this issue. Your arguments were strong and your true feelings about this were directly noticeably for me. I‘ve been searching for the right words to write a comment over the last days, but I wasn‘t quite able to find them. So I‘m happy, that you have deleted it and answering on it isn‘t nesessary any more😅 So now let‘s enjoy this massive body of work and find peace and inspiration in those lyrics! And be sure of one thing: Your channel will always be indispensable for me in all Beatles related questions 👍🏻🙋🏻‍♂️🍀

Joe, here's a practical solution for all Beatle fans, collectors and historians. The Lennon Estate (Sean) should release John Lennon's The Lyrics Book referencing Beatles and solo works using contemporaneous interviews up through 1980 as sourcing. It would add balance to perspectives and look great having Lennon and McCartney books sitting side by side on the shelf gathering dust. Keep up the good work.

Hi Joe, I just wanted to say, that anyone who saw the first video, would not question your commitment to your original stance or think that it was some sort of set up for this video or clicks or something. . It was plain to see that you were hurting in that video and felt strongly about your reasons. The whole McCartney/Lennon thing keeps rearing its ugly head again and I have the same frustrations about this and the Too Many People podcast episode on the BBC as you do. It wasnt enough for me to boycott the book because i take a positives v negatives viewpoint, but i understood why you were angry. It take a big man to step down and backtrack especially publicly, as you have done, so much kudos to you. I hope you enjoy the book.

I respect your decision to change your mind. Loved the first video. Very refreshing to hear. I did not pre-order. I walked into an Amazon store today and unless you're a prime member it's a whopping $100 + tax. There are no discounts anywhere including B&N. I've been torn about getting it because of the price and also because I have a multitude of Beatles/Paul memorabilia already. It's just too much and another object to gather dust. Perhaps if it goes down in price I would consider getting it, but I'm sure that won't be for a while. Everyone wants to get as much as they can while they can. And lastly, do I really NEED this book? I've been a fan since 1964, but lately it seems to me there's so much overkill going on with Paul lately. He seems to crave all the notoriety he can get and I'm getting weary from it. Enjoy the book. I don't understand why the US version is different from the UK book. Probably because the UK is his country. But w/o the US, he and his mates would not be as successful and to me, it's rather petty for the differences. Well, I've rambled much too long. Enjoy.

Why are people so damn crappy when they don't agree with you? Please, don't take these comments to heart, Joe!! All people are bad to some extent. All people are good to some extent, also. We have to take them all at face value. Be true to yourself and be kind to yourself. You are the ONLY person that you need to believe in, totally. All we have are ourselves. That's the bottom line!! Take heart, my friend. You have a lot of people who like, love and care about you, I'm sure. Take care, my friend!!

I was counting down the hours and knew you would get a copy. I was struck when you said you weren’t going to get it. Sad that being here in Canada we don’t get any bonuses that you get in the States. In fact I had to order it from an American site as it was not available here in Canada (and I didn’t preorder it). Enjoy it.

I like the page in Lyrics with the photo of the Casbah Coffee Club coaster covered with Paul’s signatures, which he was practicing because “We’d been hoping beyond hope that people would ask us for an autograph”. Guess he didn’t think autographs were so silly back then.

I don’t think you need to be so hard on yourself. People change their minds all the time. What held true yesterday may not hold true today. I don’t think anyone will think lesser of you. If they do, ignore them. They shouldn’t think lesser of you because you gave further consideration to the issue and resolved it in your own mind. But taking ownership of one’s opinions and decisions is important. You handled this honorably and smartly.

To be honest, I think the whole writing credits hoopla has always been a total non-issue for me. What does it matter, really? The songs are still just as amazing whoever has their name on them. Let's not forget that 'Please Please Me' was originally pressed with the songs being McCartney/Lennon. If however, Paul is suddenly TAKING credit for songs that he traditionally had little or nothing to do with, then that is strange and disappointing, especially as seeing as in 'Many Years From Now' and 'The Playboy Interviews' John and Paul both seem to agree with each other on who did what. It COULD just be a genuine misremembering on his part. We only have to watch Anthology to hear four totally different versions of the same story. Or, maybe he DID do more than tradition tells us. Let's not forget again, John wrote some of 'Taxman', George wrote some of 'Come Together' Whatever the case, it's still Paul, we still love him and I look forward to getting my copy of the book soon 😃

To Paul's credit, in the book he does put Lennon's name first on some songs, including A DAY IN THE LIFE.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney wrote over 180 songs credited to both of them. Paul, for his part, has written hundreds of other songs. In total, he may have written over 500 officially released songs. The question is, why, with so much material, he decides to include songs written mainly by John? Okay. He did it. In addition, he decides to change the order of the credits in those songs written by him and John. Now we read "Paul McCartney and John Lennon". Again, no problem. It is understandable that he does it in all those songs that we all know are his, mainly. But the last straw is that he also did it with four songs that were written mainly by John. How is it possible that he now puts "McCartney & Lennon" in the credits for "Please, Please Me", "A Hard Day's Night", "Ticket to Ride" and "A Day in the Life"? Seriously? It is not a joke? And he also takes the audacity to reverse the order in two of the iconic songs, the two classic examples of 50/50 collaboration? I mean "She She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand". It's a shame Paul can't see the problem. But no way, that has always been his attitude: all my songs are mine and all John's songs are his and mine.
@MeanMrMayo
@MeanMrMayo 2 года назад
Actually a few of the songs you've mentioned are indeed attributed to LENNON - MCCARTNEY in the new book.
2 года назад
@@MeanMrMayo Yes, my mistake. I'm waiting for my book, but I did see the table of contents and read some articles about it. I understand he puts L & M for "Please, Please Me", "A Hard Day's Night" and "A Day in the Life", but not on "Ticket to Ride". Am I correct? Can you tell me what about "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand"? I'm ok with everything else, of his songs, mainly, to read M & L. Hey, even I would be ok if he decided to say just "by Macca". But not on those other songs by John.
@MeanMrMayo
@MeanMrMayo 2 года назад
@ ..HAND is Lennon/McCartney, but SHE LOVES YOU and TICKET TO RIDE are McCartney/Lennon. I think TICKET TO RIDE is the one I have most trouble with, as I think John should come first.
2 года назад
@@MeanMrMayo Yes, it seems that the issue will be with "Ticket". But besides that, great to hear that "Hand" is L & M. That confirms that "She Loves You" is more Macca and "Hand" more Lennon. That's why John wanted to performe it live in the tour he was planning back in 1980. And that's why Paul never played those two songs live.

Credibility?? You're a passionate Beatle fan and you've devoted a lot of time and thought into your videos over the years. You speak your mind, good or bad and that's fine by me. However, I will be curious if you find the book a good read. I don't see myself bothering to buy it. I guess as I get older I care less and less about lyrics, especially Paul's. Yes, he has written some great songs with solid lyrics. But, often times I find myself just enjoying many of his songs with no care for the lyrics. I actually prefer books that critique his songs, both musically and lyrically. Either way, I hope you enjoy the book.

I've changed my mind myself many times. And if I get something, and after having it a bit, I decide to give it to someone else as you know. Some people think I'm nuts for that. I will get any item I want to, and I will give away any item I want to. You do the same, Get anything you want and Don't if you want. Take care
