Released toward the end of my freshman year. I no longer own the album, so it's not often that I hear it. But I like that, actually. I like to listen to old favorites after a long while. The evocation of sights, sounds, smells; of long lost loves and friends, is wonderful. These sounds give rise to recollections of awkward first kisses, clammy hands held, mischievous rendezvous while the parents slept. "It was long ago, and it was far away. And it was so much better than it is today."

I think whether or not one really loves an album kind of depends on where you were and what was going on for you when you heard the album. For me, I was about 11 and living in the Solomon Islands. This was the first solo Paul I ever heard, and I loved it. I think, even at that early age, it felt to me like there was something missing compared to the experience I had hearing just about anything by the Beatles for the first time, but I still loved this. All the songs were memorable, even if in retrospect they weren't his greatest songs. I heard Imagine and the Ringo album at the same time, and of the three of them, it was the Ringo album that held the most magic for me as a kid. I'm The Greatest sounded like the closest to a Beatle record I'd heard from them as solo artists - not surprising as it's the only song post-Beatles that John, George and Ringo are on together.

Yes. They are more than a sum of the parts... Great albums like this one say something cumulative. Off this one I get 'Happiness is the Meaning and Purpose of Life' which is Aristotle (kind of). I just noticed that rhythm guitar work is perfect.... (not intrusive).

This is the equivalent of 'Don't Shoot Me' VS. 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' for Elton John from the same year - overshadowed by the other big album, in this case, Band On The Run. And I think rightly so :) But we're all still glad this album exists, and its solid and still brought some classics from its sessions...

I think most had felt that McCartney had lost it, until Band on the Run hit big. But if you think about it, how energized are you sometimes after coming out of a energy draining, seven year marriage, huh? Hell, it certainly took McCartney some time to re-coop and to get it together with Wings, but once he did, the rest is history.
@schtuff.8207
@schtuff.8207 10 лет назад
***** Paul talks about his initial struggles after The Beatles, and you can hear him really starting from scratch after the Beatles. Just listen to the first McCartney album - how simple it is. He's definitely trying to re-connect to 'why would I make music still? Why did I make it in the first place? What else do I still have to say?'... Also, the seven year marriage was The Beatles in case you missed that :)
@cobaltjones
@cobaltjones 10 лет назад
Taylor Abrahamse I think the thing is, after you hit a certain level of success, you think you can just coast onward into more great music, but music is always a lot of work. What I hear on McCartney one is one really produced song and two other solid demos, then a bunch of indulgent throwaways. He was tired of the 9 to 5 grind in the studio and the criticism of Martin and Lennon. Guess what though?, he needed it to do his best. Artistic excellence is only arrived at through suffering, not domestic ease. Otherwise I agree with your post.

***** and that's not even to mention the ingenious guitar solo on My love, by Henry McCullough. He should have really paid those guys and they would've followed him anywhere. That band would've ended up truly an historical phenomenon.

***** There's snatches of brilliance on McCartney (1970) and yes, Ram (1971) is a certifiable stunner, full of gorgeous pop/rock. At this moment though, I have on Wild Life (1971), 'I Am Your Singer', 'Tomorrow', 'Bip Bop'...classics. The rest a little bit uneven but it shows he was gathering momentum. Red Rose Speedway, great album. Big Barn Red, Get On The Right Thing. Incidentally, a lot of it originates from 1970. He had tunes falling out of his arse 1969/70. I simple refuse to admit he was drying up. He just went at it a different angle to John/George. Both had recorded their best music by 1975, too.

too bad the Beatles couldn't have gotten back together at this time. Could you imagine an album with "I'm the Greatest" "Photograph" "Give Me Love" "Mind Games" "Tight Ass" "My Love"....... it would be the top album of all time.

Steven W Rodgers Yeah , It´s my lament too.There are some juicy songs here besides "My Love" : Get on the Right Thing; Big Barn Bed; and even "When the Night" and the beginning to "Hold me Tight" . All of them would be great numbers with the Beatles perfect balance, because with Paul and Wings these songs sound excessively light, cheesy and mellow! "Little Lamb Dragonfly" is an underrated diamond!
@garethb1961
@garethb1961 10 лет назад
Viuomar I agree. I like your comment "All of them would be great numbers with the Beatles perfect balance,". That about sums it up. Paul didn't lose his song writing, he lost the back up vcals and the musical ideas of the Beatles to shore up his songs. I always try to imagine Paul songs played by the Beatles - thay are great!

A teacher in my film school once said "script is everything". And I feel that the songs here, except "My Love" are not very memorable (for an ex-beatle). I was also waiting for a more rocky track, but it is overly-light I feel. BOTR, Ram, and "Chaos & Creation" are probably his best post Beatle albumns in my opinion.

Script could be argued to be everything in film(though I would place visual composition above it, because it is a visual medium), but music is a far deeper art; lyrics are components that carry the aesthetic whole of the form. If you're thinking about the words, you're not listening intuitively, beyond intellect, and music surpasses rationality. If you listen to Beau Soir by Debussy and you don't speak French, then your experience is what it should be while listening to a song with an English lyric, or virtually so. The literal meaning of the words should disappear into the form, delicately balancing between specific intensity and generality. Words in a song are primarily flowing sounds that enable a string of notes to build a sonic phrase. If they're terrible, they ruin the form. If they're great literature, they usually jar against the visceral experience, or else dumb down the music, which is true of many Dylan songs; much of his music literally anyone could've written. People forget when they disparage the Beatles next to Dylan, that the Beatles were far superior as composers. Currently, our culture is a Matriarchy, so feminine impulses rule us psychologically. Women think while they listen to a song or watch a film. Men are more likely to let the form flood their emotional responses. In other words, despite the opposite myth, men are more sensitive than women in general. This is why the football coach calls the male players girls. He seeks to kill their natural sensitivity, so that later on, they will develop tumors and be dysfunctional. But for his purposes, they are good soldiers. Look at all of the caricatures of masculinity in our culture. That's to appease a woman's cartoon sense of masculinity. They are manipulated to be warriors; to compete for women and then to protect them in a marriage and be a drone for the rearing of bodies. This centralizes women and keeps the culture superficial. A drone for procreation cannot identify with McCartney's crisis of meaning. He has eschewed an individual search for truth in order to play a role perpetuated by women. He does not have the burden to create works, which for an artist is the central thing. Paul was asking himself "can I still create?" "Am I anything on my own?" Lennon had to be held and rocked like a baby during a bad acid trip, by Derek Taylor, and reassured of his worth as an artist. Ordinary people are self satisfied with being good conformists. Artists have to actually achieve their sense of worth by production of excellence, and it never really resolves itself. They are constantly dissolving and never really satisfied. They must constantly create meaning, instead of being spun like a top by society. Conformists are gyroscopic, not self generated. It's a very different thing to create your own energy system, versus being obedient to a pre-scripted choreography. Society is a script that we perform, in exchange for resources, respect and security. So, for women, the script is everything, because the script is safe and predictable and reaches a rational resolution, tidying up the usually formulaic dichotomies. Security is the religion of the masses, and the masses are feminine. However, powerful art wields a dangerous ambiguity, a double or even polymorphic meaning that opens a kind of psychic wound to act as a lens onto, or door into, the intangible world of the soul. In a female culture, the soul is promoted as the fiction of a primitive mind, instead of what it truly is: a masculine womb through which God figuratively enters the world in timeless works.

I would argue that script is everything in a stage play, which is a story told in dialogue, and cinematography is everything in a movie, which is a story told in pictures. A good play can be delivered on the radio without much loss. A good movie can be shown with the sound off without losing its essence.

red rose speedway es mejor que band on the run, mejor tocado, interpretado y cantado. Pero no me di cuenta hasta ahora 40 años después...

These songs are timeless since they exist in the present moment ! If you seek truth and inspiration, google truth contest and read the Present. There's a section on the Beatles (p.59-68)
