Guitarists - take control of your pick technique. Paul Mehling has developed a powerful series of exercises and practice regimens that will help all plectrum (flatpick) guitarists play with greater strength, speed, expressiveness and authority.Paul provides many paths to success for players at all levels. He shows you the basics - how to grip the pick and maintain proper hand and arm positions for fluid playing and to avoid tension and fatigue. He then takes you through a graduated series of chord and single string exercises to get your mind and hand working together. These include strumming and damping, scales, chromatic exercises, "speed blasts," arpeggios, tremolo, sweep picking and much more.Whether, like Paul Mehling, you are into Gypsy Jazz, or you play bluegrass, rock or swing, this lesson will give you the tools you'll need to get your rhythm strong and your lead picking fast and accurate.

I've played this way for years and was always told it was wrong you were to move the whole arm to keep good timing feels good after all these years to have at least one person tell me I'm doing it right lol

Paul Mehling comes from a Gypsy Jazz style that uses a different style of strumming than conventional pop and folk styles. He's an amazing player with great chops and understanding of his genre.

"After watching and playing along with Pick Power, I finally got my right hand to relax, and it actually opened up the sound of the guitar. I can play longer without getting fatigued, and I have more control over my volume when playing in ensembles..My buddies told me to turn my amp down" Craig Gildner Blue Sky 5 Red Hot Rhythm Chiefs

@ptalbany I know it's late, but Jimmy Bruno uses a variation of this technique. Howard Alden is one of the truest practitioners of this free wrist playing. I use a hybrid method of both camps and feel like I great a truer sound with this method. it's harder with the thicker gauge you string your guitar with (I play with 13s). The best par of this style of plectrum playing lies in it's versatility. You can comp and play single lines with the same techniques. Gypsy players must have known this.

Thanks for this. Very helpful. Do you have a similar video on right hand technique for plucking jazz chords? My fingers and thumb get all tangled/cramped and the "chord" sounds rubbish.

This technique had a long time to develop. It is about 1000 years old and is used on many string instruments in traditional styles from North Africa to India. You can play lightning fast with little muscle tension. Widly travelled gypsies just kept the best out of each culture. In comparison: The flatpick-techniques in European/American guitar styles are only ca. 150 years old and usually much stiffer, slower and lower in volume. So stop make fools out of yourselfs by saying this is "wrong".

I will say his right hand goes too far when coming up in my opinion. I have worked closely with Stochelo Rosenberg, and many other gypsy players and have observed plenty and done workshops...never the hand goes that far up.

@Rexicano Music is evolving and standing still. One Django is enough. I never saw a second one. Pierre Bensusan plays a different style than gypsy swing. Both is very enjoyable. If u break music down, then fun should be left at least!

I think this technique was devised in order to get the maximum volume out of an acoustic instrument. I'm not sure how you could incorporate this arched wrist technique into electric playing especially with high volume or gain where muting is required. Al Dimeola uses a very flat wrist for single line passages, more like a karate chop, . Funnily enough, if you look at Hendrix he used quite an arched wrist although his technique wasn't quite the same as these gypsy jazz guitarists.

If that is the way Mr.Mehling believs is a good technique - good for him. You have the option of not using his technique. Hey, Where is your Tape on this technique???? Additionally I see warmth and kindness in Mr. Mehlings presentation. I hope you will post a tape also and be kind and sharing such as his tape is.

i dive been working on my right hand a long time and still dont have it right - if you watch some birelli and debarre stuff it looks like at least one of their fingers are on the soundboard when they solo - watch the la gitane one with angelo debarre in the first few measures you can see it in the camera work - i guess its whatever you can do, like anything else... anyone have any suggestions of more vids to watch for right hand technique? thanks

That's a very ignorant statement, friend. Paul Mehling is one of the best Gypsy Guitarists out there today and I believe every aspiring Gypsy guitarist should be honored to have these videos available.
