Jimmy, back in the 70's, the old "Jazz Showcase" in Chicago used to have a 2 drink minimum per set. Waitresses were smart, if you didn't hand them the exact change, they never came back with any change!! lol
Great video. I love Darn That Dream, wish you would run through the whole tune. I keep wondering why you were not one of the all time top three names in jazz guitardom, or maybe I was too unaware to realize you were. I can't get over your fantastic playing; keep listening to you every day on Pandora radio. You're an inspiration.
Why should there be a fixed “three”, meaning if Jimmy got that spot he’d have to kick someone else out of that bracket of excellence? Who chooses the “top three”? How often is that ranking list updated? Music is not a sports competition, it’s creation. There are far more than three masters who are no better or worse than one another, but stand as equals in creating a uniquely beautiful music
What I don't get--I speak clean because of my day job--but, what I don't get is how Jimmy developed a way to get clean, lightening fast technique from his right hand... and yet there are still people talking about anchoring and Benson technique like it was written in the good book or something. I still haven't come across a book on technique quite like Jimmy's. I have some of Dennis Sandole's stuff, and some of Ivor Mairants stuff--those books still don't compare to Jimmy's picking technique book (put out by Melbay--I hope they still sell it and pay Jimmy his dues). There's a sound that you get when the action is coming from the muscles of the arm that can't compare to the thumb alone. It's louder, and more defined. Ah... whatever. Good to see Jimmy is doing well, even if he can't play with his doggie metronome anymore (he used to play with his hummingbird metronome back in the day, right?)
Interesting on the PDF stuff... this is why I find it so boring learning how to read music, I know where all the notes are and can learn by ear. Once you know a few jazz tunes they're all the same movements anyway.
