and another for each time you delight in the fact that he did!..🙈 It seemed like Lee hit a Sour Note early on that set the tone like he's trying to take cheap shots but most "off-comments" by Rob and Lee are based off of Valid reason, once you get passed the brazen forwardness of their humor, especially for someone who takes Sound and Craft so seriously.

Paul is a strong individual who has made a lot of work to be where he is at now. I only wish Paul Smith was the CEO of Gibson as well, being "odd" is ok especially if you are a hardworking genius at a certain field. There will never be shitty QA at PRS, and the way this guy has passion about his work is the reason why. And this is coming from a gibson player...

Actually, having met Paul at NAMM, well spoke to him, he was very nice and not even remotely stuck up. He could have easily told my nephew and I to get out of the back room where the deals were made. Instead he posed with us for pictures and even made fun of himself in one. Yeah he seems to have a kind of ball busting sense of humor but so do I so it doesn’t offend me in the least. He’s a nice guy, honest.

I think the issue is that he's SUUUUUUUUPER defensive about this guitar, and it's coming out during this interview as rude aggression. He's probably just sick of talking about the naysayers, and would like to just talk about the guitar itself.

So many times in this interview and prions interviews between Paul and Captain Lee, Paul is being super difficult and argumentative. Well, I do as well in a group situation when we are noodling and chatting but not in a serious interview situation (not that anyone would want to interview me). I sense that Lee was starting to get irritated and I do not blame him. I like Paul very much, he has a lot of interesting things to say and I own five of his guitars but his manners in this situation annoyed me. On the other side of the coin I thought Lee was wrong to interrogate Paul about his pickup design, Lee is a partner in a rival guitar company, why should Paul give trade sensitive information to a rival after years of expensive development. Perhaps the Captain should think about his manners as well?

I don't give a shit how much of the builder/s soul they want me to believe was left in the thing when making it. Music Man's are built just as well. He’s actually a pretty good guy to work for. I’ll just say this...there’s a “reason” he is the way he is in this interview. From a business perspective it's pretty amazing how PRS have gone out and done something (new) w/ their catalog that adds so much sustainability and new growth and security for the company and its employees. Sounds like they may even be adding employees. They're still finding a way to balance short term & long term when a lot of guitar companies aren't quite able to do as much in 2018. No doubt the guitar is great, I'd love to have one & will in time ($). But they'll be selling the HELL out of these and that's amazing. Still staying relevant & pushing boundaries, maintaining quality etc. I think that's to be applauded really.

PRS is a tough interview! lol He get's onto tangents which lead him to other tangents, and the ears turn off. He does seem like a genuinely good guy though, and he deserves mountains of credit for breaking into a highly competitive industry and wrecking his way into establishing a "big 3" in guitar making with the inclusion of PRS into that exclusive group. Probably my biggest consolation with Gibson being in the trouble they are currently experiencing is that no matter what happens with them, PRS will be around pushing high quality, well designed instruments to the masses. That's actually comforting to know. Great vid and thanks!

The funniest part of the beef is that PRS didn't wake up one morning and say, "We're gonna make a strat!" This is John Mayer's signature guitar. He got what he requested - end of story. I don't understand why there's a problem. If any of you people bitching about this ever got the got the opportunity to create a signature guitar, it would be just as derivative of the guitar you play most as the Silver Sky is to John's favorite Strat. Not a single one of you would have an ounce of originality. So, to quote the mighty Frank Zappa, "Shut up and play yer guitar!"

@cslayer1984
@cslayer1984 6 лет назад
Or it could be that he got The Dead gig and he wanted something different, which is showcased with the Super Eagle and the J-Mod, and he liked the quality and the vibe of PRS so he asked them to make something similar to his Strat. But here's the thing... Who. Cares? Don't want it? Don't buy it. It's not anybody's business what PRS, or Suhr, or Tom Andersen, or Fernandes, or Schecter, or Ibanez, or Epiphone (all have made Strat influenced guitars, or flat out copies) make. What matters is how they sound, and how they play. See Zappa quote once again.
@RRW276
@RRW276 6 лет назад
C M I think it's that - what you mentioned about the Dead & Co sound & the Super Eagle. I also think John found someone (PRS) & a company that speaks his language and that's part of why he's gone full force with them, and it makes sense. Lee talked a bit about Clapton when Paul mentioned him, but Clapton may be at a point where he's invented (I have to say invented) all the tones he's going to create. Whereas, I believe Mayer might be heading in a new tone direction, a new stage, and PRS was able to see his vision to help him get there where maybe Fender couldn't or didn't want to. Either way, love it or hate it, it's going to be a great ride to see where John takes this next - as a huge Mayer fan & especially of Dead & Co. I've seen them twice & it's an exp I'll never forget.

First Question: Where did you get the inspiration for such an original and unusual design?
@alexd3206
@alexd3206 6 лет назад
It's half LP and half Strat with a 3+3 headstock. They're well-made, but hardly unusual.

It’s genuinely sad... because I could totally see myself trying one out, and enjoying it. But Paul comes off as so rude and sarcastic in this, despite how kind and polite Lee is... and it totally turns me off from wanting to associate with PRS.

Paul needs a strong chill pill!! Lee, you saved the interview by being calm and cool. The Silver Sky is an awesome guitar and speaks for itself, all Paul had to do was hold the guitar and smile. I still went and bought the Ernie Ball Music Man Cutlass HSS and I’M SUPER HAPPY!!!

Gotta love Paul, such a great character and one of the few big names where the guys name is still on the headstock! National treasure for sure hahahaha

If I didn't already have a Strat that I like, I'd definitely be interested in the Silver Sky. It checks a lot of boxes for me, personally. The pickups are vintage-voiced and seem well balanced. It has a great headstock design with locking tuners and a good nut for better tuning stability. The 7.25" radius is comfortable. The vibrato also seems to be stable. For any Strat I would buy, there would be a list of modifications I would want to do, but I would probably leave the Silver Sky as is.

I never noticed before how matte the tuners are, are they plastic?

Paul’s a bit triggered, huh? He needs to realize he’ll have the last laugh. Maybe his intensity is the reason PRS is such a great guitar company. Awesome freaking guitar.

I'm a strat player, but I love the fit/finish/playability of PRS guitars. I've always wanted a true PRS strat. Now they've made one. Paul, please take my money.

Guys another thing to consider is that Lee and Rob Chapman make Chapman guitars and Lee is now interviewing Paul and anything he says can give them ideas to make guitars better. They also used the same factory to make the Chapman guitars in Korea I believe. That factory does several different guitar manufacturers. I have a PRS SE guitar and love it. So Paul knows what he is doing. I would love to get one Custom 22 or 24 guitars.

So two of those things that are "dead wrong" in the pickups that were fixed in the SS are present in other guitar pickups, like the rest of his line?

My son tried one and thought it was a great guitar to play with the neck being really comfortable. Had we needed a "vintage" type of guitar, then we would have seriously considered buying it (and it was available for us to buy) - instead we left the shop with a Hollowbody II as it filled a gap and sounded awesome!!!

I got to play one the other day. Its an incredible guitar for the money. Its equal in quality to my suhr. The sustain is identical and its half the price. Very impressive
