This was awesome and exactly why I have ordered the Silver Sky. The comment that "..out of 100 Strats you get 2 or 3 that are MAGIC" is exactly right. I ended up finding a Custom Shop Strat that I have played 1000's of shows on over the last 20 years after trying about 50 Strats. I have tried hundreds of Strats, Suhr's, PRS's etc to replace my now very aged and well worn Strat without success. Thank you JM & PRS. The perfect marriage of guitar mojo and luthier. Bring it on...

Simon Tay well we still hate this ugly fake ass Strat, the only reason you should use this guitar is if you are getting paid like Mayer to play it. $2200 is fucking bullshit for fake Strat. You can buy some early CBS strats for that. Save another 1500 and you are starting to talk about getting into the 60’s range.

Jason Clark so far like 15 mins Into this video I’d agree ...but the ugly arrogance of like the last 10 yrs are tough to forget about...lol. One video of him in concert saying something like “ I wrote this song and sent it out to make (or sell) millions ...” just about made me puke . And yes I probably misquoted heavily but it was in that vein of ‘Im great , cause I write songs like this ‘ along with the attitude that just are , I don’t know , gross.. but yes in this video he seems to be informative without all the arrogance . And I will watch him now and then cause he is a committed player ,and if I can learn one thin g from him all the bs is worth it

I disagree. The Les Paul, for example, wasn't the first single cutaway electric guitar introduced, but it has become widely accepted by musicians around the world because it was a better instrument than what was previously available. Most LP players bought the guitar based on the merits of the instrument, not because they are fans of Les Paul's music. A similar scenario will play out with the Silver Sky.

i think you and Paul did a great job with this guitar John. i'm a full time musician 28 plus years, on Decca records in the 90's, and own a great gibson R7 LP, a 335, 3 tele's and a whitfill tele... i say all that just to say, i think it's complete BS the way i see a lot of musicians mean, ignorant comments about the gtr. just about every guitar company, big or small has copied the basic designs of Strats, Tele's, LP's and 335's... anyhow Rant over, and again the guitar sounds great, and the look is growing on me, as i think it will a lot of other players in the future... rock on brother...

I don't know much about Mayer, but I have watched a lot of videos talking about people dissing this guitar. While it is not my style, it is obvious John put some heavy thought into this. I like the cut away and the head stock is nice. I'm not a fan of Fender at all, but this has enough to make it a totally different guitar. This video should shut down anyone still bitching that this is just a Fender copy. Lastly, while I knew he could play guitar, I now have the utmost respect for this guy. He is a monster player. I don't agree, I'm a blue collar guy making minimum wage and I saved up for more than one of these. Also of note I called a few days ago to ask about the formulation for the paint because I'm a nerd and couldn't find information on their website and Paul graciously took my phone call and answered my question; what other guitar maker would take the time to do that?
@roknrole
@roknrole 6 лет назад
Seriously. As far as I can tell, PRS is about making guitars the best way they can for every price point. Paul is super proud of their import models, and rightly so. The QC is great, enough to the point where I found an SE model that I preferred to a similar S2 model. I have bought Fender CS guitars that are double the price of this one, and the qc was not even close to the level that PRS has for their $1k range S2 models, and even the SE stuff. The way I look at it is this: I have to spend a LOT more time trying Fenders to find what I feel like is a really good one...while every single MD-made PRS that I've bought has been fantastic. Perfectly set up, perfect fret work, everything is right. Just my personal experience as someone who is extremely fussy about intonation, fretwork, etc. I love and own all kinds of guitars, but no matter what the price point, I personally feel that PRS gives you the best value for the money you spend since you know that a high level of care and attention to detail has gone into every guitar they send out. And to speak to Jonathan's point of Paul also being passionate about the players who use his gear: I bought a one-off PRS head that was modified by Paul and Doug, and had something go wrong with it, and when it went back to them for repair, Paul got wind of it and let me know that he personally made sure it got fixed properly, and that if I have any other issues with it, he is my amp tech. There's no reason he needs to spend time on anything like this other than the fact that he is really into making sure that they do everything the best way they possibly can. Google some search results on folks dealing with Gibson warranty service, it's a nightmare.

This always make me cringe. Paul actually does not make ANY guitars. Not for several decades actually and even then he always had others working with him making the guitars. Please don't call him a guitar builder. He is an awesome salesman though. There is not dentist or lawyer who can resist his charm.

Timothy - Paul is not hands on at all. That is my point. He is a marketing, public relations guy. It is doubtful if he even owns any fraction of the company. He should be selling you a used car actually. You fell for the deception Timmy. Even if you put a gun to his head, Paul would not be able to build you a guitar. You need to subscribe to a guitar -truther channel to get the truth but you may not want the truth. Thats what your problem is. The guitar industry has never been about the truth.

Love the Photography analogy. It's true in all things. People parrot what they read, and spend more money trying to buy talent. John is a great guy, an amazing musician and performer. He is a nostalgic romantic engaging in modern conversation. He connects directly with his fans, and the public. This guitar is a great work of love. but again, it's only as good as the Musician holding it.
@Spidouz
@Spidouz 6 лет назад
To take his photography analogy, then try to take an inside picture of a room with a 200mm now... I'm pretty sure it won't work and you won't get the whole room, right? That's exactly how some people might feel about the 7"¼ radius. I fully understand it's for him, but saying it's irrelevant, it's just saying it's irrelevant to look at the size at all... like trying to say a 200mm will be good for EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. Hint: it does... and there's nothing to do about it, it's physics, just like a neck dimensions and shape. Using a "vintage" size is not what most people are looking for today... there's a reason why most manufacturers (including Fender) run away from 7"¼ and went with more modern and more comfortable radius later on (and now even compound C to D and 9"½ to 12"). It's all about modern comfort because most of people today want familiar look, vintage tones but with modern comfort.. A 7"¼ radius is like a 200mm lens. It might be great for some people and some usage, and yes we can even make portrait with (and a very nice bokeh when fully zoomed on the person), but it will surely not fit if you try to make interior pictures.
@easton_ography
@easton_ography 6 лет назад
Phil Smith I think the point John was making us not too have the idea in your head that a 7.25 won't work just because that's what your told to think, but rather, try the guitar for yourself and if you don't like it, that's ok. But at least you made an educated choice at that point. I've played several guitars with the same exact neck radius and some felt great to play on while others were obnoxious to me. There's many different factors and the only way to really tell what works is to test it without a preconceived idea.

very cool that's it the same colour as a Tesla. The truly remarkable thing is that his new guitar very much captures the spirit of the Fender stratocaster. The fender guitar, regardless what John plays, is in his current guitars DNA. For a guitar over 60 years old that is amazing amazing and speaks to the genius of Leo's original idea. Candy Apple Red Mustang or red Tesla - both very cool but if the strat was never painted in a car's colour he wouldn't be holding that shade of red. Very interesting how the evolution of the guitar is an extension of the original. Who was it that said the more things change the more they stay the same

I just want to say I’m very impressed with John he is a really down to earth guy especially at this point in his life, I really appreciate that, I remember when I first found Joe Bonamassa and I really liked him because he was down to earth too, now he seems completely self absorbed.. I follow John on Instagram super cool dude. Thanks for the video I missed the live stream

He smashed the nail on the head about the unusable treble on even the high end custom shop strats. I have the 1960th anniversary edition American strat and anything above 7-8 is almost painful to the ear. LOVE that idea of chopping some of those treble-some frequencies.

Fair play to PRS and JM I’m sure it’s an epic guitar to play. I love my strats but I’m pretty sure I’d love this too

It's amazing how polarizing this guy is. The guitar community seems to love him or hate him. And those that hate him really hate him which is unfortunate. I think he's a hell of a guitar player and he knows a lot more about guitars and guitar sound than most people are willing to give him credit for. I love the look and sound of this guitar and can't wait to try one out. However, I'm concerned about the fret board radius. If the radius was 9.5 or higher I probably would have ordered one already, but who knows I might just love it. In the end, I'm probably making too big a deal out of that aspect. I appreciate his candor in talking about his guitar.

G&L guitars have been doing similar things with their strats and teles. Leo Fender improved his design while at G&L. The Legacy, for example, replaced the tone controls with treble and bass controls. This Silver Sky sounds incredible. The tone controls make sense. The headstock...yeah, it works, sick wit it. Now do a Telecaster!

I got the stone blue se edition. Absolutely love it. Hoping to get the usa version later. Awesome job on design and quality. I recommend it to all my friends. Iv been playing lead since the 60,s. Thank you John and prs. I played the usa version too and it blew me away.

I like the design choices John & Paul made. Visually. From a designer perspective. I wish the curves/angles where a little more calculated. Not down-talking the choices made. They are good, if not great. In my humble opinion. The headstock is a little 'sharp' and this sharpness could have been mirrored in the 3d cutout. I like it we see John thinking here about knobs and logic UI design (haha). In short. Cool stuff.

Definitely the best PRS guitar on the market..Imitation is the best form of flattery. I think it safe to say that we could all be waiting a long while till we see a Fender bring out a PRS clone. I'll stick with fender...

Musically I don't get JM. But regarding the controvercy of his PRS signature guitar I was curious. And man, that statement makes me check out some of his music, too. Because that is a musician I can really respect. Whatever his choices are.

Looking back at this, one of the truest things I think he talks about is at the 19:00 mark. Him saying that "99.999%" of fender strat headstock copies don't look right is EXACTLY the reason I DESPISE almost all strat copies, as the vast majority just look like shit. I think this is primarily because they are trying too hard to find something that is still as close as possible to the fender headstock without being a clone of it, and it's like the "uncanny valley" effect in computer graphics, where the closer it gets to the "real thing", the worse it looks to your brain. For this reason, the 3x3 headstock is my absolute favorite design detail of the SS.

This answered just about all of the questions I had about this guitar. I think John could've answered most everything with a sarcastic "Because I like this way" and I would've been fine with it. It's his guitar. He got exactly what he wanted. I still think it looks odd, but I could get used to it.

The biggest problem the initial demos had were that they didn't have John playing it. If I want to buy a John Mayer signature guitar through a John Mayer amp, I don't want anyone demonstrating that rig who isn't named John Mayer. This guitar in his hands sounds like a completely different beast.

I have seen the light ! Was a non-believer....no more...The man explains and I understand everything. Especially true being the radius argument. They could've had John do this straight out of the gate at release but...well, everyone's been talking about it since - marketing ? Gotta love John's straight talking.

As far as wiring, I kind of wish they had the Bass knob and the Treble knob configuration, like on G&L S-style guitars.

Nice demo, John. I love the sound of this axe. Compared to Fender it seems a bit warmer on each pick up which I like. I love the tone 5 setting, also. Nobody complained about Schecter or Charvel copying the Strat sound. Therefore, PRS will take his own place in this, as well. I love PRS axes. I prefer the neck angle which is shallower like an Epiphone so you'll have less string binding...You'll always have your place with the Strat and you'll have yours with the Silver Sky, also. Leo would definitely welcome this axe...Thank you for your accomplishments...

Excellent. Can’t wait to try one. Fender makes a great guitar, this guitar takes nothing away from them. I’ve had a PRS Santana III for 9-years and love it, I’m sure this Silver Sky is going to be a home run. Sadly the Santana doesn’t make me sound like Carlos and I fear the Silver Sky won’t let me sound like John

Dude, is JM ambidextrous? Almost everywhere else I see him playing right handed. I was depressed when I thought he was just way better at the guitar than I am already, and then he pulled an Inigo Montoya on me.

Fascinating video. Amazing playing. I'm sure there are still plenty of haters out there for this guitar, but that's life. I would definitely buy this guitar if I had the $$$$. Well, I would go play it first to be sure, but I like what I've seen and heard thus far and, honestly, I don't think the price is that unreasonable. I figured these would be in the $3500 - $4000 range when I first heard about it.
