I'm 81 and there isn't a day I don't miss it. Its really amazing no matter how much new music is coming out, that era will never die nor will the ones before it. What's really respectful to my generation is that our younger generation is listening to what I grew up with.
"Kicks" was written by husband and wife songwriting team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, who wrote the song to try to motivate Gerry Goffin (Carole King's husband and songwriting partner - "Up On the Roof', "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow") to get off the drugs that were affecting his career and his marriage. Mann and Weil offered the song to Eric Burton and the Animals, who refused; they then offered the song to the Raiders, who took it to the Top Ten in the US and No. 1 in Canada.....thank you for coming to my TED talk....
Mark Lindsay was a tremendous lead singer. One of the ways you can tell is that any time people have tried to cover Raiders tunes, they can never come close to the original. 'Him or Me' is a great example; a lot of versions of that song have been recorded, and no one can touch Mark Lindsay's vocal performance. Just superb.
@@KMK7355i grew up with them and will be 78...they were huge and on am radio and tv all of the day and nite...if anyone qualified for the RRHF..they did !!...idiots are who vote now...that do not know ....from shinola !
I think it is absolutely insane that Paul Revere and the Raiders are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are one of the greatest group that ever performed. They not only have great musical talent, they also have the greatest personalities. I could listen to them all day. I have listened to them since they started in the 60’s.
They are not in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame because they were a sham. Their records were great and Mark Lindsay was a fine singer, but that famous studio band, The Wrecking Crew, provided most of the instrumental music on those hit singles and LP's. I saw them on TV all the time, but they did not perform 'live' even once! They always 'pantomimed' to a recording and they did not even do that convincingly.. It seems that the so-called band members were more interested in wearing those pathetic costumes and posing for teen magazines like Tiger Beat, than practicing on their instruments in order to become good enough to put on a real concert. They simply have no credibility as a self contained band.
@@philiphatfield5666 all this shows what a fantasy tv. Can be. The monkeys were a tv band, that way. I wonder who wrote kicks, and him or me? I ll investigate. I like the costumes and wigs , though. It’s a show! A fine show !
8-year-old me loved PR&R among others as a budding aficionado of rock music. 67-year-old me is extremely grateful to have been young during such a pivotal and magical time in history.
The greatest line in rock history. You see no matter what you do you can never run away from you. Brilliant. This song is as good as anything the stones did.
@@b.o.4469 So much music history. It's like probably first radio station was in San Jose CA in 1909. Playing records , contests & people calling in. Yet I always hear radio started in Pittsburgh in 1920. So much hidden history. There was music available thru phone & in bars back to 1880's in Paris. Lots of songs about drugs, sex and rockin' going way back. Check this out. Robert Culp from Berkeley CA : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kGWL1mMJHss.html
This song puts being addicted to drugs or alcohol being not the way to happiness. I know first hand what it takes to find true happiness when you get cleen and sober. By the grace of God I've been sober for 40 years one day at a time ❤
After years of relapse after relapse, at 70 y/o I am finally there, my man. And I'm celebrating!!! Ten -- almost said "only " ten -- days since I've toppled over to the other side of the fence. Always saw through the fence, but never had the balls/smarts to climb it , and after reaching the top, still lacking the honesty to do the part that validated the climb: Hopping over to the other side!!! I made it man and I'm feeling great! Anyone who thinks there's no higher power than us ought to have their head examined! Thanks for "listening" friend! Bennet Manzella, Rockaway Beach, NY 😂😅😅😅😊😅😅
Best anti-drug tune of that era.. Paul and Mark sent a true message to leave drugs alone. It is only a dead end street. You end up feeling hurt and lonely
I'm still watching and still loving Mark, Paul, Freddy and all the Raiders all these years later❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Still great like it was all those years ago.
They performed for our company in the Dominican Republic during the intervention in 1965. A great group they were. It was hot so they shed their jackets. We really appreciated them, Bob Hope, Grandpa Jones and all the other performers for being there.
We took a lot for granted in the '60s, except for that war. We all drove cool cars; listened to the best music in the world; had groovy friends, and loved with great passion. Never know what you have until it's gone! But the memories still remain.
Today is a sad day in the Colonies. Paul Revere has passed away at the age of 76. He was energetic ad happy to the end, they say. Condolences to his family, friends and fans.
I was born in ‘62 in Baltimore, MD and remember I had a baby crush on Paul Revere. Distant memories of watching them on our big tv console with the small screen, dancing and shaking my four-year old butt! My love of dancing had already begun. American Bandstand and Soul Train were two of my favorite shows growing up. I always wanted to be one of those dancers!
How I miss those days and the AWESOME music we had in the 60s!! Loved this band (Mark Lindsay was HOT!), and we were so blessed to live through that decade. ♡♡♡
People don't appreciate that the Raiders were one of the first bands to deliver messages about ethnicities and drugs and other non boy-loves-girl pop music on top 40 radio. I saw the Raiders on a TV show many years ago, they hadn't played together in quite a few years but agreed to do a song or two with almost no time for practice and they did great.
A great anti-drug message back then when young people - my generation - thought it was cool to trip out when in fact it destroyed countless lives - and continues to do so today!
The kicks, a better drug, a better party, a better girl, gets old. The loneliness of searching can be brutal. Everything changed for me when believed in Jesus as my Lord and Savior at 24. Now I'm drug free, married, and looking forward to heaven. We are almost home!
Great testimony Paul, I dealt drugs for nearly 10 years in the late sixties and almost all of the seventies. I got saved March 23rd,1980 and have been drug free every since(40 years.) Sin is fun for a season and then it gets old.I had 4 buddies go to the pen for dealing and the guy I was selling weed for got murdered.!
Whenever I'm feeling down and having anxiety about our crazy world I come watch this and Mark and the guys bring smiles to my face. God love 'em. They were so awesome ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Dick Clark was a major patron of theirs, and helped them immeasurably in their early days. It was Dick who helped them get signed by Columbia Records, and the TV exposure on "Where the Action Is" and "Happening" helped keep them in the public eye.
KHJ and KRLA owned LA back in the 60’s and early 70’s. I was a KHJ guy myself, with Charlie Tuna, Robert W Morgan, Mark Elliot, Real Don Steel. The Raiders rocked KHJ and they played on the show that was filmed at Santa Monica and came on at 3 PM. I wish that would happen again. Best tomes
I agree totally as do the GRASS ROOTS AND THREE DOG NIGHT BUT doubt they will ever get inducted. Instead they put BILL WITHERS in who had what 2 hit songs. It’s laughable.
Bands like this were on TV and magazine covers so much, they actually had GREAT influence way beyond their actual music ability. They didn't put out good albums, but their popularity was enormous and their singles were catchy.
They were a friggin' great band. I remember seeing them on various TV shows back in the day. I seem to recall one of the guitarists was called "Fang", and he would sometimes flip the back of his guitar around to show his name in big letters.
I surely recall this song on cold winter Nights in illinois......and when I daydreamed in Grammer school This song occasionally rang thru My head. Know that feeling?
I'm 75, and we used to play this song live at dance gigs, though not nearly as well. That blonde go-go dancer could the poster child for "reckless abandon", I think.😎
Mark Lindsay-one of the BEST male vocalist ever; just listen to his voice in "Feel The Warmth" & "Miss America!" Pure, emotional (from the soul) and powerful!!!
The Raiders were a part of the excitement and amazing talent in the Rock and Roll world of the day. They shared ideas and helped lead us to where we are.
For the serious artists it was just a short phase of innocent experimentation and they moved on from there (unfortunately there were some causalities with unscrupulous managers and darker musicians) @juscurious
A generation? Hell, the drug euphoria never stopped. It's worse now than ever. And the message of this song is "you don't need drugs, you just need to have sex with me." yeh, really inspiring stuff.
One of my favorite groups of the sixties. I loved their costumes. This was the best of their songs. My wife always liked Mark Lindsey. That blond short haired girl sure can pony!
Never got to see the original group but saw the group in Branson a few years ago. Only one original member still living. He was great! Still jumping up and down in those boots. Best aftershow, too. Stayed and visited with everyone as long as someone was there!.
Great Song!🎵😎60s 70s 80s and early 90s music is cool. I enjoy all kinds of music . 🎼🎶REAL INSTRUMENTS REAL MUSIC REAL VOICES 🎹🥁🎸🎤 lots of fun!Love sixty music.👍❤✌🇺🇸
