Ah tools...my favourite being that large ring spanner (obscure brand, flaky chrome) which clanged so wonderfully when flung at the floor in a practised fit of exasperation! 😊

Hi Paul, You have done it again hit the nail on the head. What you missed out is to explain to the knowalls which end of the adjustable to hold. Perhaps that's why they have problems. Geoff.

Paul , you nailed it when you pointed out they had no content. Until I’ve built, serviced, fixed, rebuilt as many bikes as successfully I wouldn’t criticise. It’s not the tool but the tool using it. A mechanic or technician will know what you can get away with. An idiot or pedant who’d round off a hex with a snap on tool will never have the sense to know what to do.

Was traveling to NY to SC on a sportster. Chain kept coming loose along the way. Picked up a adjustable wrench that worked on the rear axle nut and chain adjuster. Got me home. Added a second nut on each adjuster as a lock nut that took care of problem. That wrench is about 5in in length fits in pocket easily. It would fit every nut an bolt on the bike with the exception of the engine sprocket. Still have it today.

The trouble with old tools is that they are very hard to dispose of, I get more attached to them the older they get! The really important ones are those I inherited from my Dads' collection from his days as a fitter engineer at Clark Chapmans on Tyneside

I first came across Bahco adjustable spanners when i was an apprentice some 40+years ago and not again until recently when i needed a new one and bought another Bahco. I'm glad to say they're as good now as they were then and like you say are one of the best! Can't beat a bit of swedish engineering!... As for the other "tools", they can use snap off for as long as they have more money than sense! As for your Skill, (for there is no better word to describe it...) let your returning customers testify to that and ignore anyone who doubts it. There's no substitute for experience and you don't do what you do for that long without learning a thing or two!...

An "acquaintance" was going off to Scotland touring a few years back on a second hand GSxr1000 he'd just bought, we were giving the bike a look over and someone spotted the drive chain was really slack, the acquaintance said "yeah I don't have the right sized socket for the rear wheel nut", it was something random like a 35mm, none of us had one so I nipped home and got my large adjustable spanner, I thought they were going to have a fit "No no, you'll wreck the nut, you'll round it off!" Anyhow I went ahead and loosened it off, adjusted the chain and re-tightened it no problem, as long as you're not ham fisted there's absolutely nothing wrong with an adjustable spanner

The oft maligned adjustable spanner, eh? Like sausages, a good one is an 'all in one' delight, but after so many poor imitations, the original idea, however brilliant, has suffered reputational damage. My boss handed me a Bahco as an example of quality nearly 50 years ago, but I only just now learned this... The 'crescent wrench' or 'adjustable spanner' originated in Sweden in about 1886, invented by J P Johansson. In 1890, B A Hjorth & Co (ie BAHCO) agreed to distribute his tools worldwide.

Reread the comments, including my own, on your last video and only one seemed derogatory. I have many adjustable spanner’s, mainly Bahco and crescent and king dick and Garrington I’m happy to use them and mole grips to help me get the job done. No offence meant, I was recollecting struggling with rusty spokes many years back. The smaller the nut the better the fit has to be and the same applies to softer materials. I’ve done three wheels, but that was Many years ago Watching your wheel vids has been a welcome refresher.

I have one of those Bahco Swedish adjustable wrenches in a larger size ( about 8 size ) passed on to me free about 40 years ago ,it was probably a few decades old then . I also have a set of mole grips ( made in Taiwan ) cost if I remember £ 2 • 99 p again about 4O years ago . They have been & still being used on motorcycles ,various other machinery & often on building sites . I wouldn’t be without either in my tool box . 👍

Wouldn't dream of criticising. I also have a pair of Maun pliers which are better than the usual sort as they have parallel (smooth) jaws, so they're useful on smaller nuts, BA and such. I know you like your trials and green laning. I used to do a bit before I was old enough to take to the road, then I started doing rallies. Better to have a couple of adjustables, and a couple of pairs of different pliers, just in case, than to carry 20 LB's of spanners and sockets

Paul, I find wheel building therapeutic and yes I too use a small shifting spanner to tighten the spoke nipples. The jaws a generally wider than the jaws on most spoke keys and you don’t need to have different sized keys. Interestingly my father had a double ended shifting spanner, six inch on one end and eight on the other. Unfortunately we all have to endure these uninformed individuals. All the best for Christmas and the new year.

I can see why a shifting spanner would be handy for spoke nipples. The QC on some of the Indian Enfield ones leaves a lot to be desired and I most certainly have rounded some using a proper and quite expensive spoke key, purely because it was a terrible fit on them. I have a Billings model A F-spanner I keep in my toolkit/pocket that will fit anything up to the 24mm rear wheel nut. I can also see why people don't like them because a poor quality shifting spanner is a liability, if the faces aren't paralell, you may as well use a pair of pliers.

Funnily enough those spoke keys ( cheap ones) can be worse I also use either a 8mm spanner ( I forget the size off top of head) or an " older " adjustable ( good quality ) and even then Ive had seized spoles glowing red with head that would rather break than loosen So now I always have a few new ones on hand ( Honda mx bikes) They get one chance then they get cut and replaced ,,, pps ... Snap on ... dont get me started ! and some really good tools coming out of Japan KTC?

Lovely tools bahco and their shifting spanners are particularly good. Crescent, Bahco and a couple of other good brands make a lovely useful tool let down by cheap imitations. As for vicegrips I have to say that the original ViceGrip brand are streets ahead than the Mole Grip with it’s unfortunate (possibly patent avoiding) release mechanism. Again though totally agree with you Paul its the tool holding the tool that’s the problem.

I did have one rather unusual problem with a couple of Bahco 150mm adjustables that I used to own before some mongrel stole them. They were identical in size and look and serial number but one tightened right and one left. I never know which one I had in hand and being a bit dyslexic and left handed it caused me more than a normal amount of bother. Still hopefully the fellow that cleaned out my tool shed is suffering the same level of frustration. 😂

Hi Paul I remember criticising a mate of mine at work Paul, jovially of course as work mates do. He had in his box a pair of Record stillsons which were as small as the adjustable you were using in your example/rant. The first time he used them for removing a broken stud, I ordered some exactly the same, and still have them as they are great. Don't get yourself riled up Paul it's not good for you, I agree with you there's a time and a place for every tool, if it's used with a modicum of common sense. Paul the problem with the internet is that it also gives a voice to armchair idiots with no experience of what they comment on. Many if them form their only “experience” from what they heard down the pub, or the grandfather of a friend allegedly told them many years ago. A few days ago I posted a photo of the car I built. It’s amazing how many people have written incorrect “facts” about it, based on what is obviously absolutely nil knowledge of what they’re looking at. Anyway, I used to have a nice little adjustable spanner like that. Someone borrowed my toolkit and I never got the spanner back. I’ve missed it ever since. Btw, If the bottom end of my 350 ever needs a rebuild, it’s coming your way.
