Older United fans like myself saw Scholes do this week in week out. I'm just happy younger fans get to see what all the fuss was about. He deserves to be named alongside the greatest midfielders of his generation.
of all time, not just his generation. He and the players around him in some of the seasons were just legendary. No wonder Man U were most feared club side for a long time.
@@cango5679 one of the best ever to be real honest. when the likes of zidane, xavi, inesta and pirlo says the same, u know its gotta be true. just that he is a very low profile person so ppl dont really take notice of him
The weight of his passes are more fascinating than the accuracy. The way the ball drops with enough momentum for an attacker to control it and shoot is just masterful.
It's uncanny isn't it. Look at the amount of times strikers don't need to break stride or adjust in the video. He's always making passes to where they WILL be and how they want it. His reading of the game is amazing.
Weight and accuracy are just two components. Vision and game reading are important as well. The way he sees the pitch is sometimes better than us with a bird-eye view. And how about choosing the best passing options to pass to (should I pass to teammate A or teammate B?). Choosing the type of passes to make (go long/short, play quick/slow?) (should I play a high ball for messi to head against Terry? Or should I keep it on the ground?). These type of decision making is important too. Scholes has mastered all these.
Paul Scholes basically has the vision of the entire field in his brain with all the players positioning, knows exactly where his team mates are and how fast they are running, has the ability to put the weighted pass that ends up right in front of his running team mate and doesn't get robbed off the ball. Just that only not much else but can't find a replacement.
Watching this I genuinely don't understand it. I'm a massive fan of the "technical side" of football and can usually see the best option upon seeing the shape of the team. But Scholes has a god given gift for these passes and I feel blind watching this. It actually feels like he had 20 minutes to study the best option in those split seconds he had. This video is scary.
Paul Scholes was a player that all the great teams in the world dreamed of having, but because of his love for Manchester United, he played at Manchester United until the last moment.
I still remember when Inter Milan interested and make offer to him, and his response is - 'You can buy me, but u need buy Manchester United too'. Such big respect for him on his loyalty, very underrated player during his career but disrespect from some rival fans ☹️☹️
@@apahhussin7966 what do you mean? i said hes not underrated, underrated means not rated or valued highly enough.. then scholes is not underrated i've been watching United since 90's long before United just like what we know today, scholes very famous and appreciated a lot.. do you even understand underrated means ?
My favourite player of all time. Thank you for this video. Plus his long passing is just one aspect of his game, his short passing is also great, he had the intelligence to always make the right pass at the right time, it's the kind of skill which doesn't always translate well into a youtube video but those of us who were lucky enough to see him play will understand. He controlled the flow of the game, he has ridiculous shooting ability and scored goals galore. His technique and close control was impeccable. He really is a unique midfielder in the history of football, my favourite player of all time.
Severely underestimated. Zidane called him the best midfielder when asked about him being the best midfielder. And the Barcelona youth trains by the Scholes principle, which are those quick turns Xavi and Iniesta where so famous for because Xavi actually watched everything of Scholes and was a big admirer.
@@MBison-vm6gq He said:' There was a point Gerrard was the best midfielder.' As for Scholes he said he was the best midfielder he has seen. Thats a difference.
Luis Figo had a great quote about him too...he was star struck when he played Scholes. You can't catch him on the field then after the game he's a ghost until the next game
"You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Paul Scoles is as close to it as you can get." Zinedine Zidane. "I'm not the best, Paul Scoles is." Edgar Davids "The best central midfielder that I have seen - the most complete - is Paul Scoles" Xavi. " The best midfielder of his generation" Pep Guardiola. Just found his book last week.
If u watch 1998 to 2003 closely, you would see that scholes inspired the other 2 to play similar style like him, except... one tripped and the title was gone and one matured so so so late in 2010s.
The problem was that Rooney was so entranced by Scholes he forgot who he is and lost his identity as the ultimate beast striker. He tried too hard to become like Scholes and never got near Scholes' level.. what a pitiful ending to his career.
that has to be the best pass in football history surely? Everyone on the field stopped for half a second while their brains were processing what just happened
Paul scholes is the heart of man u ..he is such a talented midfielder for his accuracy passing and the way he reads the attacking for goals..salute you Mr Paul scholes 👍👍
there's time they said A.Valencia just play in 1 style attack only - make them boring, Now we have Wanbi SAka, 0 style - no definition - no boring anymore
He was one of the very few in the team who could receive those long passes flawlessly, apart from CR7, Van Nistelrooy, Berbatov, and maybe Tevez and Andy Cole (found out too late that he was good). Not even Giggs (not that consistent), not to mention Rooney who always failed the chances provided.
Which world do you live in? Pirlo, scholes were just orchestrators, whereas xavi was orchestrator + classic no.10. He used to dominate the midfield, drop deep, collect the ball, placed him as the anchor and regulated the defensive thirds. He was not as prolific passer as pirlo or scholes but his established role in the game made him the greates centre mid. Players like pirlo and scholes had pin point accuracy but the recievers had to be good controllers of the ball, those passes are a bit reciever dependent whereas xavi's passes were player friendly, anyone could recieve his long ball not because of his accuracy but because of his vision
I don’t think there has been a player that current Manchester United need the most than a prime scholes. His leaving left a giant hole in our midfield that has never been filled.
@@MrPlenty1 Ronaldo and Beckam are great #7 but were well replaced. Keane, Scholes and Giggs are irreplaceable. Keane's role as DMC was taken up quite well by Carrick and Casemiro (though the leadership will NEVER be same ever) but once Scholes retired, the entire United's gameplay has to change. Those were the days of Xavi, Iniesta, Pirlo and Scholes, the midfield marshals who terrorized Europe in the 2000s.
for those who ask " he just passing sideways " dude, its 30 yards into the final third, the ball is easy to control, it open the half space of wing back and cb, not just that, from midfield area to final third in a matter of second is really huge for the team to exploit the space
@@delmanpronto9374 Yeah I agree. if people say United played fast football it is because of him. If they say United put so many crosses and played direct football, its because Scholes made it possible. I do not know why they bought Veron, whose game never suited the style - perhaps to make Scholes fight for his position ? I find it funny that people in England thinks Gerrard was better because he scored more goals, its funny, reason United won so many trophies was cause they had player like Schoes and not Gerrard or Lampard. Scholes made Cristiano, Nistelroy, and Rooney score, his primary job is not to score flukes like Lampard.
@@adad-ec6ht Lol no Gerrard was better because Gerrard had everything in his game. He passed just as good as Scholes and his passing are even dangerous and directly threatening to the opposition than Scholes who mostly passed in an open flanks to the wingers with lots of spaces. And Btw, if United has Gerrard, you wouldn’t be talking about Scholes like how you think about him right now. Because I’ve seen Scholes being dropped in an important matches and subbed on and off for someone like Veron, Nicky Butt, Kleberson, John O’sea, Anderson, Etc. Also, Fletcher, Js park and Carrick even benched Scholes when Scholes was playing his best football as a deep lying playmaker. It’s no debate, Scholes can be the best in the pitch when he’s on the ball, but he was average on many things off the ball which is why he never got chance when Lampard came to the scene in the central midfield role. Scholes needs another DM to play his natural game which England couldn’t afford when they had 2 top midfielders and strikers on Gerrard/Lampard and Rooney/Owen. Hence why Hargreaves got a chance to play as a DM and not Scholes.
@@debindralimbu381 Gerrard never passed as good, he was very slow in passing and Liverpool had the worst possession in the league and in the champions leauge and so did England. Scholes was subbed to fit in Veron but it did not work, also substitution also happens for tactical and fitness reasons.
He was terrific young, sneaking about in the hole behind the forwards, scoring fair share of goals. But for me, when he had to adapt, and people forget, he got concussed and had vision issues in this period as well, he did something you rarely see. A quarter-back alike football, where the backs and midfield players would hand it off to him and he would play it short, medium, long, and diagonal switching the play like a fucking master orchestrator at work. Magic. In the last.. two years? I watched as the team degraded and kept giving the ball away. I could see from afar frustrating that poorer quality meant wrong workload. But bottom line, he made Man United worth the entry fee. And all the players people talk about, the Giggs, The Cantona, The Andy Cole, Sheringham, York - and the wingers - those wingers could hug the line, the ball would come. They could make the run, the ball could come. Magic. No greater words than Bobby Charlton saying he was his favourite player. Nuff said. Done. Dusted. Put a fork in it. And if you don't rate Scholes - You don't know football. Lastly. Not one to roll around crying. He came up through the school of Robson, Ince, Whiteside, Moses, Stiles. I fucking LOVE that he was willing and did play the hard and dirty work of not letting others play while strumming the orchestra in the night. Magic. Red_Devil. Exactly. Not the greatest athlete, and troubled by hot weather - which is why I think the big tournaments don't show much for him. Incredible career. Blessed with talent. Lucky in that regard but matched with a work and team ethos which took him to an incredible level. Man U in the golden period would not have been without him.
Exactly, I grew up with United and Scholes being my idol and favorite player I just love how he make those plays and definitely love each time he bang a screamer just outside the box
Art in motion not only the range but the weight and accuracy is next level, glad us united fans and every football fan had the pleasure of watching this man play football
His eyes: see things most don't see His brain: always a step ahead His passes: accurate and weighted His awareness: always know exactly where his mates are Only flaw in his game: lack of some pace but he never needs to rely on this though😁
Lets put aside the amazing and out of this world freak of nature kind of passes he made. The man had a football brain that was unparalleled he controlled the entire game from the centre of the park, dictated the entire tempo knew exactly who to pass to, go short or long or just keep the ball. GENIUS!!
i always thinking that Roy Keane leadership style as a captain & his ability to control the midfield is the key to MUFC success during SAF era. However, this living legendary footballer is really the best architect for his team and it's unbelievable when he is so underrated. His ability to make long & even short pass accurately is totally crazy! And don't forget his so many volley shots too! This man is talented! CR7 is so lucky to have been playing alongside Scholes in those days! TQ Scholes for being loyal & entertaining us to the maximum level!
His teammates say it was impossible to get near him because his brain was ahead of the rest. SCHOLES was not flamboyant player who did a lot of tricks for the cameras, his was simple but accurate stuff. It's true that if he wanted to attract the camera, he could do it but he saw no sense in doing so
hes not underrated, its just lot of liverpool and chelsea fans that telling people he was shit, back in the day when no social media everyone who watch football highly rated scholes, even theres only 2 midfield who can reach 95 rated point its zinedine zidane and paul scholes the closest one is xavi iniesta with 93 rated
@@Ax-gw3hy Shut up. You’re guilty of your own accusation. No Liverpool fan says any of that about Paul Scholes. It is haters of said club that continuously insist Scholes was a complete midfielder, which he wasn’t. And it doesn’t take away anything from his brilliance.
This is my opinion, I don't think there is another central midfielder in history that could ping the ball with such technique and accuracy. Scholes had a range of passing unmatched by any other player. Long or short, those cross diagonals from inside his own half were just pure arttistry. He never ever lost the ball or mistimed a pass even feom over 50 yards, we watched in complete awe of his consistency. The weight of the pass through and behind defenders, he didn't just pass the ball, he caressed it with extreme precision. He knew exactly where the ball had to go before even receiving it and the type of pass to make. The most intelligent player on the field and unbelievable how good he was. He never got the true recognition he deserved because of his quiet personality. Never did interviews. He was the shy boy with the red hair and yes Gerrard and Lampard were great players, but Scholes was like watching Picasso paint a masterpiece everytime he passed the ball. It was that beautiful.
Paul Scholes had something in his head to scan teammates on the pitch. It was either a one touch pass or one touch to setup himself and make the pass. The accuracy and weight of his passes are unbelievabe, and scored so many wonderful goals as well. I always ask myself if there was something in his boots that people didn't see. He was a joy to watch!
There were many good passers in that Man Utd midfield, Giggs and Beckham were also superbly accurate into feet and running onto the ball and Keane of course was a great all rounder. Scholesy adapted to all the eras under Sir Alex due to his footballing brain.
Roy Keane had an unbelievable passing range when he was in the mood but spent most of the time getting in people's faces lol but Scholes was just unreal.
Has always been my fave, will forever remain. 2:09 cheekiest pass in the history of football? Probably not, but...it was against a certain side... The master of the outside of the boot pass, especially the "flick on". You captured it many times in this tribute. Figo and Henry said it best, "on the pitch you can't catch him" and "without a doubt the best player in the Premiership". Verbatim. I could quote so many others but those were the ones that stuck out most to me. Oh, and Socrates, "Good enough to play for Brazil" That's pretty epic. One day someone will come along and be his equal but I am biased, I just don't see it happening.
I’ve never seen a player pull off a perfectly weighted pass like him. Truly the greatest English midfielder of all time. I am too young to have enjoyed him in his prime but rolling back the days and watching these clips reminds of his true status in the English game.
Obviously his pass skill and accuarcy is kind of like art but also his teammate’s first touch and clearing skill is fantastic. All harmony with their teamwork
Dinks, curls, outside of the boot, driven, caressed, lofted etc the guys range of passing was off the charts even at the end of career. What a player scholesy
I remember watching match of the day when there was a young lad "marking" Scholesy for the opposition. The lad had so much energy and at the start of the game Souness said that energy wont matter. Scholesy moved away in that half second the lad wasnt watching and always one touch passed to the teammates the entire game. The lad was replaced at half time for another player who was older wiser and still got nowhere. Watching Scholesy was just amazing. He was head and shoulders above everyone else skill wise. He just made it look so easy. His only weakspot was his tackling and that really didnt matter all that much since he was always the one dictating the play. His ability to move into space at the perfect moment, and be where he was needed at the perfect moment.... Then land a 30 yard pass, time and time again, some games it was just a passing masterclass as no one could get near enough to stop him. He needed half a second and he already knew where he was passing the ball to. Very rare to see him dwell on the ball. I think the biggest difference was you would watch a player nowadays, they take their time and then make 2 of those passes a game and people comment. You just expected to see 15 of those passes a game from Scholes, on the turn with no space, and you were almost surprised when they didnt connect perfectly to the striker. It was just nuts to watch.
Ronaldo said he was absolutely astonished at Scholesy amazing technique in training and on the pitch Scholesy made everything look so so easy and a complete pass master and the master at controlling football matches which is a massive reason why United won so many trophies back then.
Scholes is irreplaceable in england pass accuracy and shots on target he retired and came back after one year he did it even better than the young lads
