Having been born in Zululand, and now an American, I love this song! It represents the best fusion of South African and American music that I have ever heard.
@@stevenkramer6217 Mama Miriam was half Xhosa and half Swati, these are Nguni Languages in the same family as Zulu, the 4th being Ndebele. Oh yes, most of Mama Miriam's songs were in fact in Zulu, I suppose owing to it being the biggest Language in the Nguni Family.
@@StarGazer_KnowledgeSeeker most of Miriam Makebas songs are Xhosa. Her father was a Mpondo, so she was very much a Xhosa. She even says so in some of her videos to overseas audiences, eg "Emaweni" , she explains the custom of stick fighting by abakwetha (Xhosa initiates), "Mgewu ndini" is definitely a Xhosa song, "uQonqothwana" as well, etc. She's definitely not confused about not being Xhosa, but yes I agree the distinctions are actually sometimes minimal because we are kinfolk. Xhosa people also take pride in their language and culture as much as Zulu people 😂
@@82pattycake Hhayi Patty, I never even insinuated confusion or lack of pride (in her heritage) on Mama Miriam's part. All I said is that most of her song are in Zulu, you dispute this, that is okay. But dont say that I said things I did not say.
The migration to African music was a pretty big shock. What's interesting is how I could embrace these albums equally to Parsley Sage, Bookends etc. The man is a genius. Never stops amazing me.
for me in 198x it was a.... syncretism or a ... coertion or... synchro or .... SYNERGY... 1960-2016... and there is none other "clown" calling themselve an artist in between those years... Kate Bush? Well...
@@mariuszfidzinski7474I made a synergy fusion album 2 years ago.. called Krishna Country Gold (B.B. Palmer) .. I went to India and recorded Sitars, Sarods, Tablas, & combined it with psychedelic existential country and western music.. look it up if you want. Paul and WuTang inspired me to make it. Thank you Paul Simon and RZA
I can’t explain it. I am not African; couldn’t carry a note in a bucket and have poor rthym, but I admit to having been bitten by the African bug as a kid, and, I guess, this just proves it is indeed incurable. So much fun, with so few barriers, after what has been happening all over the World over the last 18 months or more, this surely is a glimmer of hope. Grief - I hope so.
One of the most moving Pieces of absolute Genius I have ever heard. The story, the emotion, the angelic tone, those voices singing both effortlessly and with such passion like this is there only song, the only way they know how to communicate…. “Music” for want of a better word, because this isn’t music, this is divine, it’s grace, transports you to a place that is only seen in your soul. This is what I think being in God’s presence is.
This is too beautiful.😭😭 No music and voice can duplicate this. This is truly heavenly. See what we create when there is peace and harmony amongst us. Everything is just too beautiful. Thank you Paul Simon❤ Great musicians and vocals. ❤
You may or may not like Simon's music, but you cannot deny that the production and musical quality of this particular British Summer Time (BST) concert were world class. The lighting, sound delivery and staging, along with the musicianship, were all superb. They were also favored with ideal weather. In short, 60,000+ people stood in Hyde Park for two hours and got one hell of a show.
I remember when I was younger, me and my younger brother would play Paul Simon's 1987 Graceland concert on VCD nonstop on repeat everyday. We played the life out of that VCD till it would no longer play. Then my dad bought another one and away we went. Thanks Paul Simon for the Good times
My favorite part of the video is around 3:25, when Paul touches Thandiswa's arm, and the trio sings together with their eyes closed, and Thandiswa's eyes remained closed for sometime while singing, that's priceless tome, and forget not how their 3 voices synchronized together
Paul Simon's Graceland album is one of my favorites and is always a few clicks away when I need to listen to it. The Graceland album introduced me to a new world of music and rhythms and wonderful groups like Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Paul Simons admiration and respect for those who enabled and contributed to his move to experimenting in African music is so clearly shown in this performance. He is clearly at home and not only respects but is respected by those who he has grown so close to.
Hard to get at truth but paul simon has on and off been accused of the opposite .Most insistantly by the group Los Lobos .that simon used and abused the established groups he sang with - in terms of giving them minimum money and credit for their contribution. Find it quite hard to believe .just repeating whats out there in the press. Maybe it comes from people on the greedy side :/ . But one thing does c he maybe skimps on co writting credits sometimes it would apear.so many say so
Great! Through Paul Simons songs I got to know "Lady Smith Black Mombaza", the curiosity was aroused, trips to Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia and South Africa as well as Namibia followed - what emotional and powerful music !!!
Wow! Never at any point imagined there would ever be anything close to the Makeba version; apparently, mine was a premature judgement... Incredibly beautiful!! 😍
@@fredkiller5132 Ha! That's definitely quite an interesting take. Well, I'd say that their combo eventually brought forth some harmonious richness that may have been lackin' in the original Makeba-Simon collabo. Or don't you think?
Great song indeed. Bless all the real African people. We have travelled around in South-Africa, Namibia, Botswana and in Victoria Falls. You all are warm people and hope for you all you will make out the best for your countries. We have enjoyed the various landscapes and all the proud people, yeah and also the white Bushmen in the Sosha Valley (great guide). And yes probably there will nog more beautifull skies than the sundown in the evening, crossing the Zambesi. Hope that one day we can return to parts of Africa again. Be proud, be strong. And yes this is a great song with even greater voices. Listen to them over and over again.
Outstanding, and your best form together with these inspiring singers and musicians. It feels like you gifted this song to them. Gorgeous moment in time, I will always come back here.
Always LOVED the Graceland album and his African influenced music such as this song and Diamonds on the soles of his shoes, Homeless etc SUPERB. "Joesephs face was black as the night and the pale yellow moon shone in his eyes His path was lit by the stars in the Southern Hemisphere and he walked his days under African skies....." PURE POETRY written about beautiful people! OMG I never realised this was in the UK HOW DID I MISS THIS :....(
Memorable and legendary song with many versions. My favorite versions are: In first place the duo with Miriam Makeba during the Graceland concert in Zimbabwe (1987). In second place the duo with Linda Ronstadt. (1986) In third place is the version sung during the concert at Hyde Park (2012) ...
Omg, I'm getting old or something, my eyes are in tears, must be some kind of malfunction. One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums, the feeling of unity, omg ❤️
When is music is music . Love it . I Remember the time it was done years ago Paul Simon and Mama Miriam Makeba . This video is awesome. Thandiswa Mazwai and his team did a great work
