Weller was 21 (I think) when he wrote this track. How, at that age, do you have your finger on the pulse of society so clearly? & then elucidate it so eloquently? Breathtaking talent.
Well, I think he might have been watching Coronation Street one evening with Mike Baldwin, the factory owner, buying cigars from Alf Roberts' corner shop but that's just my take on it. Great song.
Men of a certain age and mind are brought to tears remembering being young lads, and lasses, at Jam gigs in their youth. I know coz I'm lucky enough to have been one of those lads 😄👍
Men of that age in Australia are still pissed The Jam never came here . They would have got a scooter escort in Adelaide from about 30 Vespas , the Clash got one and seemed to dig it , drank beer after the gig for a few hours & answered Q's about The Jam.
@@stuartharrison165 Didn't know they didn't get to play Australia, still the Clash had that energy in their gigs and was lucky enough to have seen them.
@@jonathansteadman7935 Clash were great but within a few yrs Mick Jones turned them into the rock cliche they said they hated & Joe couldn't prevent it . Weller's never let that happen , although Style C had their dodgy moments .Never team up with a Mick , especially if he thinks chewing matches is cool .
Seen the Jam live in Dublin 1978 brilliant gig , Fair play to them for coming over not a lot of bands would play in Ireland then . Much respect for Weller ! ☘️
That would probably be myself mate.... I was at that Toronto performance I believe it was government... Kool haus.. . Looking forward to the History show September 2024 should be a good one after 7 years waiting patiently.....🇬🇧🛵🌻🍵❤
One of those amazing songs that makes me wish I was from the other side of the pond. Paul Weller is a British treasure who has left an immortal legacy of great music.
The sentiment of the song is the same where ever you are! The dreams of being more successful and rich and being envious of others who are; but forgetting that it is not money that makes us Human!
Watching this i really got to thinking that Paul does really need to pick up the phone and tell Rick and Bruce to meet him at the van and be ready to take back this Country We All Love ! GOD Bless the Jam and the Generation that followed them which remain to this day, Children with a Dream !
In parts he sings the verses a little different to the record (like at 48 seconds )..sounds better than the original. Every now and then, everything comes together perfectly and a little bit of magic happens - this is one of those times.
I am a creative writer and decided to put this song with the Hollies Bus Stop and man at the bus stop was born, I love the jangly 1966 sound of both songs, this would have fitted easily on Revolver
This looks like Braehead...If it was then the sound in the auditorium was abysmal, I know i was there. Weller kicked up fuck the next day, swore he'd never play it again. This sounds great though.
