This was pretty awesome and I love that song!! I'm a late to the game Paul Weller fan, having first discovered him in 1984 when a girl in my college dorm was listening to Long Hot Summer and I loved the beat. I knocked on her door and asked who is that? We became friends and she introduced this black girl from Detroit to The Jam and Mr. Weller. Thanks Lisa!! Now I've gotta find that song..that beat is dope! LOL
Great footage. Did the gigs sell out then in USA? I think his first solo album sold reasonably well?. I’ve owned a few hang ten tops but there hard to get hold of, well decent ones,Clint Eastwood wore a few during filming in the 70s too.
Yeah I was able to hang out with the guys after his performance at St andrews' Hall in Detroit I believe it was July of 94 I had seen Paul the previous year in Providence Rhode Island at Lupe's heartbreak Hotel which I drove from Port Huron Michigan then off to New York City to catch the gig at the Academy it was a cold rainy December 10th evening we were all waiting around for the band to depart in the hotel window van they said sorry guys it's cold and rainy with snow and they hopped in and shut all the doors my friend Steve who is a big Jam fan was pissed Weller didn't sign his Japanese CD and was bitching up a storm...!! I grabbed the CD and walked over and knocked on the window the windows were fogged and no response so I knocked again next thing you know the window rolls down and Paul says how can I help you I said would you please sign my mates CD we have traveled from Michigan he says wow that's a bit of a trip thanks for supporting me..... that story lives on..... Paul has a great memory when I seen him again he said you're the lad Michigan aren't you wow what Memories.....❤🍵🇬🇧🛵
@Burgerino - that's a fine bit of weller insight from one of his best eras - thanks very much! Hang Ten are surf t-shirts so I'm surprised he was interested in those unless it was for a gift for someone...
@Burgerino I do remember some stuff Weller talked about during our meeting. First thing is, is that I gave Weller a mix tape two years prior, and the first thing he said to me was "that mix tape you gave me was real good." I also mentioned that I thought the song "Hung Up" sounded influenced by The Beatles "Let It Be" album, and he corrected me and said "White Album." He also asked if there were any stores near by that sold Hang Ten shirts. But we didn't live in LA and couldn't help much.
I remember when he walked out on Poorman. I think that was back when KROQ was still in Pasadena. I was bummed because I was all set to pop in a blank cassette and when Poorman came back from commercials, he was mumbling something about him and Weller getting off on the wrong foot. If anyone has that audio please upload it. I'd love to hear it. BTW, why was he never on Rodney on The Roq. That dude worshipped The Jam.
@CurtPhoto Well Curt, usually you were there meeting Weller with us. So many great times with wonderful memories, like the first time we all saw him in LA at the Variety Arts in 1991 (almost 20 years ago!). I believe all the girls rushed to the stage during "Long Hot Summer" at the 1992 show in SF, and some of that footage made it to the early documentary (before Highlights and Hangups). You alwyas took so many nice photos then!
@Burgerino Actually around that time, Weller looks to be wearing Hang Ten type shirts on his cover of the single "Weaver" and during the video of "Sunflower." I think his interest in those shirts can be connected to his interest in the 60s and The Beach Boys, though this is just my theory. I also remember asking him about Dr. Robert (leader of The Blow Monkeys) working on his first two records, and he told me that Roberts had just begun working on a record right before he left on tour.
@wovokanarchy Not true. Steve Cradock just didn't hang around at all. I remember even wondering if Simon Fowler would open an acoustic set before the show, like he had done with Weller in the UK. But Mosley Shoals would be in 2 years, and the first album had hardly set the world a fire. Ocean Colour Scene didn't know themselves in '94. Paul Weller on the other hand has been a legend since 1977, so obviously more attention was paid to him.
