One thing that really impresses me about Martinez. Most boxers want to work exclusively on the outside. When they get inside they just clinch and wait for the ref to break them. Not Martinez. He's willing to keep his hands moving at all times. Even when he's tied up. If he has a free hand he's trying to hurt the other guy. If there's a way to put his hands on the other fighter he's going to do it. He fights the full round every round and he's always moving his hands. What a fighter. And he's not the type of boxer that just wants to score points. He wants knockouts. He wants to hurt the other guy. God bless Sergio Martinez.
this is the only reason mayweather is still undefeated he always had home field advantage ive personally seen mayweather lose in 3 diffferent fights but yet he is undefeated bosing has no credibility its a joke.
Micheal Taylor He had a motorbike accident and he is now paralysed. He is very lucky to be alive, if he was not as fit as he is then his body wouldn't have been able to survive.
It was a close fight, but I gave it to Martinez. This was the fight that got me into boxing. I love it now, and Martinez is my favorite fighter. It's a shame he got famous at such an advanced age. We only have a few years left of Maravilla! And what a shame about Paul Williams. :( I'm just happy that he seems to have accepted everything that has happened to him. He's always smiling and joking, from the videos I've seen. A true champion! These two put on a show and made a fan that night. :)
Only been following boxing for about 10 years, but this is one of my favorite fights; Julie Lederman learned well from her daddy, I'm good with the draw
Martinez had one of the prettiest, fan friendliest styles I've ever seen, I don't know why he wasn't promoted more. Australians loved this guy when we found out about him, but it was near the end of his career when he fought Julio César Chávez Jr. Great fighter though
This was boxing at it's best, but holy shit it was just fight fight too. These were some real HARD HARD punches that were thrown here. How the hell they went as all out for the whole fight is mesmerizing. Marinez had an INSANE Check hook.
Gotta respect both of these guys. Williams took a lot of hard right hooks and kept coming and Martinez, with Williams' pressure was able to keep himself together for the whole fight. Great fight.
Hell for leather, crazy ass fight. Williams didn't use his physical advantages, or roll with the punches at all - hard to match his work-rate though. Their rematch several months later was a shocker - didn't expect that to happen.
sad thing with P.Will is that if he learned how to used his height, he wouldve been even more scary. It's unfortunate that Steward couldnt have got to him at some point.
Lampley was so biased on behalf of Martinez one would think he bet his house on the guy. Williams was doing great work and landing hard shots in the 11th that were being completely ignored.
119-110, "I'd say he was blind. WHO's kidding whom"? I must say that this is my 2nd view of the fight & it was closer than I recalled. I still think Martinez won but only by 2 rds - his KD of Williams in the 1st was a crusher. PW's KD of SM was a glancing top of the head punch as SM was off-balance & Sergio appeared fine, while PW was dazed, having gt caught flush & sailed into the ropes. Draw? Can't be too irritated w/ that score but BOTH of the other scores are off-the-mark; the 119-110 judge frm NJ shld have bn fined/suspended and sent back to "Scoring a Fight: 101".
Martinez clearly won this fight. Paul Williams was a good honest fighter but was overhyped as hell. He got badly beat by Lara too and got gifted big time in that fight.
it was a close fight. it was a draw but i can see how either man would have won by 2 rounds. NOT MORE THAN THAT- but u can see how martinez found the left hand the knocked paul out
I had Martinez winning this fight, close one though. Imagine if Paul Williams was still around, I'd love to see him fight Canelo/GGG/anyone else in that division.
Martínez was a damn good fighter so skilled yet he wasn’t afraid to mix it up at times.. he was fast elusive and had underrated power he also had a good chin. Williams was great as well tall long althetic good chin too and very active
That is why when I watch boxing matches, I turn the volume down real low...mainly because of the bias by the commentators in favor of their television network fighters.
It’s crazy to think about how different things could’ve been if a few things went differently. If Pavlik doesn’t get sick and fights Williams we probably never see this or the second fight. It just a chain reaction from that point how different history could be.
I'm so fucking tired of Jim Lampley. He's always trying to push some kind of agenda. This fight was a very close fight and yet all that Lampley talks about is the good things that Martinez does. At times he flat out ignored hard punches that Williams landed. Then after calling a biased fight all night, he tries to lead ledderman into saying Martinez won. Ledderman gave a good score for this fight. And then before the fight was even over he was already setting up the conversation to be about a robbery whenever he was talking about the "American" judges and how Martinez was from Argentina. Lampley is a fucking disgrace. I don't know how anyone takes him seriously. He does this kind of bull all the time. I can not wait for his ass to be gone. Kellerman needs to take over now.
Well said. I saw it too. I had Williams winning by 3. I personally think that Kellerman is even worse than Lampley when it comes to sly, biased commentating but I agree with most of what you said. The most blatant example of HBO bias I have personally witnessed was the first Chavez/Taylor fight. In the last round when Chavez knocked Meldrick down the whole commentating team went dead quiet and said nothing. I have a feeling Lampley bets on the fights and thats part of the reason for the bias.
nobody ignored any punches i only seen paul land half a dozen solid punches if that he had a good jab but his power is that of a babies in comparison to martinez. martinez won this fight not even a dras n my opinion
i wasnt telling i was asking. and as for lampley i do my best to ignore him and manny. i really only listen when RJJ talks cuz it seems he doesnt discredit any fighter. and i do agree dat they didnt really credit martinez enough. both great fighters and i loved every second of the fight and wished there would b a 3rd 1.
bazemk5111979 I say TKO. It'd be hard to get a clean KO of someone as tough as Cotto unless he gets caught like Paul Williams did in the rematch against Martinez.
I agree cotto was never lights out, from what I remember he has 2 tko loses. There is no doubt prime Sergio was on a whole other level than when he fought Cotto with limping legs.
bazemk5111979 True. I could tell that Sergio was in trouble after he started limping in the 1st round and even against Martin Murray he was fighting on bad legs. Prime Martinez is a complete beast and nearly unbeatable.
say what you will about PAUL WILLIAMS- his spirit is remarkable.every time i see that interview with him in the wheel chair after the accident inspired. How he keeps such high spirits is crazy.Thing is that his spine isn't severed he said its just bruised which means he may walk again. GOD DONT MAKE MISTAKES. as for the fight PAUL doesn't fight as tall as he should and he gives up height when he throws sometime but the pressure he brings is ridiculous
This is the first match I've seen of Sergio Martinez; he boxes like a true pugilist. Not much of a Williams fan since he was allowed a robbery against Erislandy Lara but both are boxers I can respect regardless.
This was a great fight, these 2 men were really slugging. I'd already seen Williams up close in his fight with the great Winky wright and Williams was very impressive in that fight as well. But this was the first time id ever seen Martinez fight i was very very impressed with his performance. He could've easily won this fight but Williams constant pressure and activity carried the day for him! Both men deserved to win, both put on a great show for everybody that night!
i agree 100%....if marteniz won this fight....pavlick would have never tookin the fight..............but they thought that it was gonna be an easy win for pavlick......great point...............this loss is what put marteniz on the map
I don't care the way the second fight went, PW has a great chin. Only fighter to stand and trade w margarito in his prime (and most likely with loaded gloves). All the punishment he took here too and finished on his feet. Maybe in the second fight he was shot, or it was just a perfect punch, we will never know sadly. PW you were a great fighter, this generation's Tommy Hearns, thanks for all your great performances and exciting fights. All the best to you and your family
I don't blame Martinez for backing away from a rematch. Chavez won't give him nearly the same respect and will come looking for him much earlier. Martinez is smart to avoid him.
Sergio healthy would have out work alot of guys, cotto wouldn't made thru. GGG would have looked stupid, canelo would need daddy Oscar to fix the score cards, I would have loved to see Sergio v paqiauao.
Jonathan Jones yes that injury in the chavez fight wasn’t good... I remember reading and interview with Sergio and he said he carried his knee issues from his soccer days therefore wouldn’t risk much of any road work limit running to a minimum and rather opted for the rower, and stand up paddle board for cardio
No I think they were bias toward Williams, in the second fight too, Martinez won the first round and they were acting like Williams did, most all boxing experts think this fight was a robbery, HBO was real high on WIlliams and hoping for a win for him
this loss was a blessing in disguise for Sergio. It gave him a fight with a big name fighter Kelly Pavlik and a bigger fight w/ Paul Williams in the rematch w/c to led to a big finish and became the KOTY. And now with a impressive win against Chavez Jr. this Saturday will certainly put him to stardom and will be able to get more big fights but in 154lbs
For me are in favor of Martinez: 1,2,3,8,10,11, FOR SURE.....And Arguably Round 12...... But watch Round 12.....Martinez landed 2 great power shots...and the rest of the round was tie for me....But for those 2 big punnches of Martinez....That round should be for him..... I dont give Martinez 10 round....but it is also another close round to argue!!!!.... THIS SHOULD BE AT LEAST A TIE!...For both Fighters!
yeah, i know stylistically they are not similar but in many other ways the comparison is fair. No Paul did not apply the same craft that Hearns did but he made up w/ it w/ his activity and willingness to engage. they both were def at the top of their division and had a unique ability to fight at many diff weights w/o compromising their abilities
Great, great fight from two legends very close but I gave it to martinez. Can not believe that the judges gave it 110-119. Martinez fought like a lion was gutted for him but I thought it was admirable the way he handled the loss and when max told him the score.
Sergio got into boxing late due to injuries in soccer only to become one of the greatest middle weight champions in history. Prime for prime Sergio would’ve eaten Cotto alive
Sound turned off. 115-113 Martinez. Down the stretch Sergio had a really hard time. He was exhausted. The later rounds were Williams' simply because Martinez had no gas left. But in the early to mid rounds it was all Martinez IMO. He definitely did enough to win.
Williams had a bit more in the tank and took the last couple which sealed it for me. Great trading and tactics by both, after the first 4 rounds i was thinking how did Martinez not get this one but Williams turned it round. Fairplay to him, such a sad story as you would expect he would still be competing at the top today.
