Her spontaneity and ability to think on her feet are amazing. She's almost literally a female Craig Ferguson. Johnny Carson hated Bob Hope because all of his jokes were pre-scripted. All comedians have a guideline, but Carson and Ferguson and Poundstone have the exquisite gift of spontaneity. That to me makes her, and them incredible comedians.
I love Paula, but there is really no parallel with Steven Wright, who is also great. She is one of the best standup comedians in her own right, and is brilliant whenever she starts to chat with members of the audience and just improvises. I've never seen anyone do that so fearlessly and hilariously.
Yes, well said, so The JayLeno Fly, thanks for the hilarious hours to watch and re watch...Paula Poundstone is hilarious, sharp. Sharp. She and Steven Wright are high calibre with excellent individual voices. But she is a master story teller. And Steven is a one line master. Paula interacts with a crowd with skill. I don't think I ever saw Steven Wright do that. He barely makes eye contact. And also, neither of those two can be compared with anyone else. I've noticed some new comedians using the same cadence as others. Same spin as others. Same "outrage" as others. Really individuals like these two (one more thing in common: very individual!!!). Maybe Paula appreciates Steven Wright's artistry and is honoured. But I think she is her own...in every way. Every way.
The reason Paula and Craig are so funny together, setting aside their intelligence, is that they genuinely like each other. They enjoy each other's company. They have wit and charm. And they have much in common in their lives to play off each other.
It's unfortunate Poundstone had that child abuse case with her foster child in 2001. The 9/11 attack squashed the story apparently.. People haven't canceled her, yet.
Paula Poundstone is an odd duck, but a true blue human being. Brilliant, perceptive, understands people. On top of all that, she actually likes people too. Go figure. Her first joke that focused me on her was: “The other day I was in a traffic jam, I was a mile back myself, and some guy pulls up behind me and leans on his horn. Like everyone else just forgot to move. I was expecting to see headlines the next day "AWARE CITIZEN ALERTS MANY." So subtle, yet scathing at the same time.
This, along with all of the other episodes was effin' terrific!!! Thank you for doing this. We visit everyday, sometimes, twice or thrice! We miss this show so much :( but, at least we have the jay Leno fly channel :) thank you so much.
I've always enjoyed the comedy of both Poundstone and Wright and noticed early on the similarities, particularly the tightrope they walked with regards to sexuality. Unless it's the cerebral political stuff (the legendary Mort Sahl just died), or pop culture, the main courses of a stand-up comic's menu have always been dating, marriage, virginity, promiscuity, my boy/girlfriend is crazy, "take my wife... please" (that's how old I am), and on and on. To stay clear of all that and still be funny requires, aside from talent, genius.
she ad-libs like no one on Earth!! I don't know how she can do it!! Walk out there with very little "prepared" material (not that she couldn't carry a whole show with whatever she prepared!), with no idea what kind of feedback she's going to hear from the audience and then launches onto a whole show on audience feedback! Her show with the "What kind of a question is that!?" had me rolling!!! I think she must be in the genius range of intelligence to be able to do that.
Honestly even the bits here that ive heard live (the airport hairline fracture) (she talked about going to a second airport for a second opinion) and it was funnier ...but also probably because her delivery is more practiced now. Totally agree though shes funnier in person
I just want to say this is a great public service you're doing! I love these videos and they make me laugh out loud. More than once I have used them to help cheer myself up. Kind of like therapy, only less expensive! :)
same here, used them when I was bedridden after a surgery and they kept me sane - or molded my unprotected mind in a new, delightful direction :) there's NOTHING like this show and it's so fortunate that it has this channel as a legacy bursar - and since ferguson didn't put much focus on politics and current events, they are kind of timeless.
My favorite Paula Poundstone joke is when she said she ran into one of her relatives at an out-of-town gig, "and all I can say is 'Thank God for dumpsters!'"
Please be explicit wrt value of exponent. Is it greater or less than 1? Is it negative? These are important questions when talking about exponential relations.
"Exponentially " is a positive as in "more of" or "increasingly" or "in addition to" ; if the subject or adjetive were negative it would be more or increasingly negative.
Was & remains one of my favorites. Her routines never get old. Poundstones brilliant Mind puts her right up there with Seinfeld, Degeneres & Carlin. Pointing out the absurdities of everyday life, each in their unique way of telling. Imagine the World without Comedians!
@@samsmith4216 I don't think your statement is correct. Carlin is very clever, maybe genius level, as you believe, but as a comedian there are quite a lot of comedic genii who are at least on his level. Maybe it's more of a personal thing for some people but the cerebral comedy thing isn't one man's kingdom alone. Ricky Gervaise is one name that springs to mind but in their own ways there are a host of lesser known or at least unheralded comics who are intellectually hilarious. Just Google 'best comedians' and you'll find a list to start you off.
@@clivewells7090 Since I've discovered Jim Gaffigan I'm never going back. For sheer laugh power nobody's in his league. Rewatch him and laugh all over again.
I wish she was still doing tours. She is one of a kind and unforgettable. Nobody will fill her shoes no matter how many woman comics come about. I love a couple that are just naturally good but she led the way for them.
I'm grateful for this video… Thank you for the work you did putting it together… And I'm wondering if calling Paula Poundstone the female Steven Wright doesn't detract from her uniqueness? She's definitely not Steven Wright… Not in any way of comparison… Steven Wright is his own unique form of comedy… And there's nobody like Paula Poundstone.
You are a dumb mom. Allowing children to get away with being slackers you have groomed them to be slackers for life. And not following your orders shows they have no love or respect and no fear of you. They are doomed unless you turn that around now. Tell them once and only once to fold clothes. When they ignore you then let them know that they now have rules to follow and there will boundaries and punishments. Later at your convenience gather up unfolded clothes and take them somewhere and dump them or donate them. When your darlings ask where their clothes are simply tell them "You folded them and put them away like I asked you to, I am correct!" They will not be rewarded with new clothes, but they will learn to care for what clothes they have. You do this out of love. Children with no boundaries or rules actually feel unloved! That is a fact. Have lights out time and they can also wake up on their and get ready for the day on their own. If they slack off then they have consequences not you.. Give them a dollar every Sunday as an allowance. Free, just for being born and they do not have to do a thing for it. If they want more they can find ways of working and earning. Children do not need cellphones. They cannot see or hear the world going on around them. Centuries ave passed without instant communication and now with it nobody seems to appreciate it. Constant contact with a school friend distances them from family. Hope you get the message and remember do not ask children questions that you do not know the answer to, it only triggers them to lie.
I still miss watching Craig every weeknight. I wish he’d go back to late night TV and only have acts that impress him (like Paula Poundstone). I watched every one of his shows that played in the DC area, but I know I didn’t see all the shows he’s done. I miss his humor!
Why haven't I ever heard about her before? She's amazing! And I don't get the comparing with Wright...she's way funnier on interviews. His speciality was one liners, but the conversation with her flows perfectly.
I Absolutely Love Paula Poundstone! She is the Best. I was thinking, you know what would be better... Paula Poundstone and Norm Macdonald together doing a special with Craig Ferguson.
I would LOVE to see Paula Poundstone mixing it up on a British panel show (WILTY, 8 out of 10 Cats, etc) mixing it up with other quit wits like Sean Locke, Lee Mack, Jo Brand and MC Jimmy Carr.
I adore Paula Poundstone. I have done ever since the bronze age when she was a regular on Moses' Thursday Night variety specials. I think. My memory is a little sketchy sometimes.
I love Steven but she's the Paula Paula Poundstone. Steven is hilarious, Paula is hard to catch your breath hilarious. Paula is please hold on for a second I think I am literally laughing myself to death hilarious.
Love Stephen Wright but he's not a great conversationalist in the chair as Paula is, and I think Paula is a master of spontaneous reaction, while Wright is kind of dead in this area.
She was also arrested for lewd and lascivious acts with a 14 year old girl and convicted of child endangerment. If she was a man she wouldn't have a career at all let alone appear regularly on NPR.
I just want to say that this was the most delightful 2 1/2 hours at work I’ve ever spent. (I listen, while I work ) I laughed the whole time people thought I was crazy. I always loved Craig Ferguson and Paula Poundstone. You are an absolute joy. I don’t know where you are today, but please make yourself known… Send out a beacon or something!!!❤️😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹
Omg!! I had no idea Ewan McGregor knew how to play a harmonica! He sure surprised Craig 😂 Also, loved Paula Poundstone's humor. I was introduced to her as a kid - she did a special for PopTarts.
I love Steven Wright and I love Paula Poundstone, but for the life of me I don’t know how you can make the comparison. They are in no way similar except that they are both hilarious.
Thanks to the person who put this together. Two + hours of P aula Two plus hours of Paula Poundstone, what a treat. Thanks to the person who put this together.
It's 2021 and I have been surfing RU-vid for comedy and standups for years and until I watched this video I had never come across Paula Poundstone before. WWWWWWWWWWWWTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFFFFFF???????????????????
I frickin LOVE Paula Poundstone. But no, her style is completely different from Stephen. My dream? Hanging out with Paula, and listening to her observations about laundry. Or anything. And with Paula, Craig was as funny as I've ever seen him. Great chemistry.
My sister called me. My mother wasn't answering the phone. I went to her house, and rang the bell. No answer. Going around the house, and looking into the windows, I saw her. She had the television on, full blast, standing in front of it, looking right at it, watching Dancing with the Stars.
The dangers of coughing: also do not stand up while you are coughing. I did once, I passed out and face planted on the carpet. I found out later from my doctor that I had experienced something called a vasovagal response. When I came to, I thought I was waking up in the morning. I found that I had lost control of my bladder, and one side of my face looked like hamburger.
I was in Las Vegas for a company event first time I saw or even heard of Paula. She was on stage in the middle of a demo floor. A few minutes before that, we had come down the elevator and a co worker had said Paula Poundstone is going to be on the main stage of the xyz company’s demo floor. Another coworker said who is she, and they all went back a fourth on who she was and whether she was any good or not, blah, blah, blah. Mean while lady behind us joined the conversation by saying, well I heard she was pretty good and had been on Johnny Carson and of course George our company know it all started with, that don’t mean nothing, Johnny’s had some shitty comedians on and if she’s working this convention, and the lady said yeah she probably sucks. So, we’re on the floor and they introduce Paula, and who is it? The very same lady that was on the elevator with us… In the meantime, George starts trying to walk further away from the stage and she says (loudly) “Hey!! Don’t walk away, don’t I know you from somewhere? And she started a comedy bit on him…. Man she had us and everyone else rolling on the floor with George turning beet red…. Funny as HELL!! Some guy asked us to follow him, where he took us behind the stage, where Paula was standing. Man she was the nicest person I have ever meet, ending the night with her giving us a personalized autograph photo and took funny photos with us. Rather a long story for me just to tell you that I feel in love with her and that she is the greatest!! God bless you Paula, I love you and hope I see you again in person soon.
My daughter is 4 10 as well. She is 37 and she tried to have a baby for years and she had to go to a fertility clinic to get help.
