When watching the face of Pavarotti, he truely was a handsome man. His eyes and his smile, are insurmountable. His love of the voice, is so prevelant, and when he sings Le Boheme it makes me tear up. Like the angels in heaven, pouring out their love on humanity. RIP wonderful man.

You have to consider yourself a student, and until you consider yourself a student the voice will never abandon you. Those were very wise words from one of the Greatest singers of the 20th century.

I think he meant "as long as you consider yourself...". It is a typical mistake non-native speakers make. Otherwise, it makes no sense.

everytime i watch this kind of videos about opera, there's so many comments that gives one an impression that there's so many technical experts on opera presently...yet this same generation produces no more of great vocal talents we had in the past....

6:44 How eerie it was to hear madama Verrett's germ avoiding self-discipline practice of 'Social Distancing', decades before our current new global health guidelines! and even MORE Eerie yet, the way with which she mitigates coming in contact with germs (and viruses) 7:02 by gargling, washing her hands and Not Touching her FACE! (her mother taught her that) A timeless health measure.

My grandpa, for many years ago, sang under contract at the old Met. He'd always walk (!) from their apartment on 72nd/RSD to there. And in the winter he wore newspapers under his overcoat to protect his upper register for insulation. So that was his old singer's trick. (Which I impart to you and which works well, of course.)

Its very true. They master the art of not allowing the larynx to rise in the throat, some use a very low position, which allows for enormous sound. It is very difficult. Think how hard it is. As you go into your highest notes, not allowing the larynx to rise. They keep a low position, not by force, but as a *result* of correct breath control and support. They walk a tight rope. Any slight degree of error (or sickness)on a high note can result in a horrendous crack. The pressure is enormous.

Pavarotti is a household name because of his publicity agent, Shirley Verrett is virtually unknown outside the opera world because she didn't seek publicity on the same level. However as a singer she was of course in the same league, at the very top of her profession, fabulous singer!

Ohh god a butt hurt listener.. Pavarotti was indeed a commercial success. Not because of his voice off course. How silly to think that, must have been his posture? Maybe his beard ? Stop your bs about being in the same league. Nobody was in the league he was, his high B in nessun dorma is amongst the best ever produced. This is not a farmers opinion, this is reckonized by master tenors that considered Pavarotti on a whole different level vocal wise.

Thank you for stating this. People often think that opera singers (Pavarotti in particular) are freaks of nature who have gigantic, booming voices that can shake the walls. It's simply technique that takes many years to master.

@Webarton Pavarotti did not have an immense voice. If anything, it was at best a medium sized lyric tenor. However, he had such an incredible amount resonance and what they call "singer's formant" that his voice was able to float over the orchestra and always be heard. The singer's formant is what allows singers with smaller voices to be heard easily while others with larger voices can be drowned out by the orchestra and chorus.

I heard evey recital in Chicago and at least one performance at Lyric Opera of every one he performed there. I have a dozen autographs And even shook his hand while telling him to go get something to eat. Really the autographs are not worth money only memories cause he signed many thousands. Start going to recitals and concerts. Try going backstage even if you fail. Sometimes even when he was a "star" there were only a hundred or so people in line. I do have a Bjorling autograph. Never sell it.

I'm amazed Ms Verret has been married 25 years; she looks about 40. Anyway it was interesting but I'd prefer more nuts and bolts about techniques especially how to deal with post nasal issues and stuffy throat which both plague me. I already drink a lot of tea with honey and lemon; any other suggestions out there?
@Itschriscruz
@Itschriscruz 8 лет назад
There are quite a few videos on RU-vid about what you can do to maintain a healthy voice. Good cardio exercise is good for breathing. Netti pots and saline sprays keep nasal airways clean. Clean nutritious food is always boost for the body. I'd say do your research and try what works for you. I'm always on the hunt for health :)

I suggest skipping hot beverages. Excess heat on the vocal cords causes inflammation and dryness, which signals the respiratory system to produce more mucous as lubricant.
@LaDivinaLover
@LaDivinaLover 6 лет назад
David Lucey the best thing is to drink room temp sparkling water. And to stay away from acids such as lemon and hot beverages. Both of which are not great for the voice. The acid causes problems in itself and the heat from the tea dries your throat out and can actually increase the production of mucous. Room temperature is the way to go and there is nothing better than plain water. If you drink enough water throughout the day and stay moisturized it will cut down on the mucous and make your throat feel fabulous ie. open and clear.

Eehm speaking voice has notting to do with singing. Some singers speaking voices are completly different of their singing voice! And its normal pavarotti speaks higher: after all he is a tenor. But some singers sont have a beautifull speaking voice and some actor are sounding beautiffull speaking but sound horrible singing. Everything is breathing and technique. Also for speaking!!
