Mike ...Another classic...That same thing happens all the time in Western PA ...Our lazy solution is to pack a cement mix under the pavers and screed it about a quarter inch over...We tamp the paving blocks just like you do but with a bit less try and try again. Same thing with the dry mix..Excess ground moisture will seep into the mix and firm it up...Another comment by an old Italian brick guy was for us to lightly spread boric acid powder under the bricks to make life tough for any colonies that wanted to establish beneath the pavers...Ants seem attracted to sand when used under brick and stone for paths drives and patios.

Another great vid Mike, those pavers look a bit a bit light duty for vehicle traffic, around here they would generally be for foot traffic , driveway pavers would normally be three times that thickness, like you said it should have had concrete sub base. I enjoy you videos very much .👍

That's not true here in Canada wr a paver capital of north America and freezing and Frost heave us out middle name. Wr use those pavers too we have different thickness and styles we use those flatter ones as well ad thicker ones. It it wasn't good it would have cracked due to the weight of the car, the sink because the base isn't sufficient. We use a new product called Gator base or we use allot of gravel some use same a small amount on top of the gravel just to assist in leveling the pavers and we hardly have problems. We use geotextile fabric to prevent weeds that product im not much of a fan ad it deteriorates over the years like 10-20 years, i like permanent stuff. Concrete is good because like the gator base its harder.to sink in the ground due to its ability to evenly distribute the load.

Very nicely done Mike, I laid 50 ft of block paving x 5 wide along side grass drive 40 years ago, a dumpster truck at 15 tons rides over it every week and it’s still level. Exactly the same principle, damp genre here in UK.

local depressions in block paving are most likely caused by inadequate compaction of sub-base ; dig down to the natural dirt, see if it is wet & spongy, replace with dry material with adequate compaction, fill up with 6" crusher run + 2" screening, do not use sand under the block pavers as it is an unstable filling material easily disturbed by rain. Sand is only good for interlocking the pavers blocks
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 5 лет назад
Hi Roder, every mason in my area agrees, you got to lay gravel pour concrete and lay them on that, otherwise you get constant callbacks, thanks mike

if you use sand as the laying coarse, there is a chance that the coarse will be washed away. limestone screening coarse will be as hard as rock after compacting the paving blocks.
@toomuch9762
@toomuch9762 3 года назад
Roger King Ip watch the video. It cant be washed away when you edge the area being paved like your supposed to and have proper base layers down. The sand has no place to go

Hi Mike, hope you are well and thank you for your advice informative videos. I have a drive way which has terracotta/ brick type pavers.The driveway is about 3 decades old and I have similar if not worse sinking were the car tires have driven on, unfortunately the pavers are not on concrete. I'm trying to avoid having to dig it all out, so I'm hoping that the underlying road base is still okay. Is there a way to know if the underlying road base is at fault ? I'm going to give your method a go just the same. Wishing you all the very best from Melbourne.
@MikeHaduck
@MikeHaduck 2 года назад
Hi Charles, it's a common problem with our weather, I won't put pavers down unless they are on concrete, but that's the technique I use when I got to fix them , thanks mike

Hi fig, not in this case, it will harden by itself, hoseing it down will make a mess. Mike

Anyway I think I did a pretty good job overall because according to you they should think while the ground is still wet and mines did it because my lacking of knowledge to place them properly and I meant even. So far the entire paver patio is solid like a rock and no weeds are showing up in 5 years. 😉

One tool we use is a miniature brick screed set. They are blades welded to a long rebar about as long as the level he checked the driveway with at first. The tools (2 of them) are one brick wide and one with the brick long as the blade size and depth. We add the base ( Mike's base self sets with the Portland) and tamp it. Using the screeds will trim off the excess so the bricks set right down and flush with the surrounding level you wish to achieve. Like a screed in laying concrete. One of our mechanics fabed them up after watching us deal with settled paver's. Lots of good drainage is the key like he says.

That's why it's messed up. It loos like the just laid it right on top of asphalt, with no base below it. The asphalt is also messed up, that's why you have cracks and grass growing through it. It they did it right the first time, it wouldn't have any problems.
@MikeHaduck

I've came across odd shape multi-sided paver repair jobs where the property owner wanted the minimum re-set when I could see because of the odd shape pavers, slope and settling, it would never work without removing everything untill you have a true pattern starting point. Not even with a thousand saw cuts. Which in this case would have been huge double driveway the owner thought he could skimp, I already had done a fountain waterfall for him he was not respectfull. Proud I dodged a bullet

Mike those pavers are the worst method of doing driveways i have ever come across .they are a huge money maker for concrete manufacturing company’s. The city and county councils in Ireland are for ever putting them down ,taking them up when they sink ,replacing them with new ones . Your method of laying concrete first is the best method but for big jobs it’s to expensive. They should never be used on driveways they always sink . The actual pavers are high quality products.
@MikeHaduck

Hi bric, I agree but they do not want to hear it, I appreciate it, mike

Mike Haduck Masonry how right you are mike . They just see how nice the finished driveway looks in a brochure. It’s next to impossible to get them to understand that the success or failure of brick paving depends on the below ground work.. I never lay them I avoid them like the plague .
@brickbybric
@brickbybric 5 лет назад
Bill Lowenburg the domestic driveways can be especially problematic a lot of cowboys operate in that area over here . But even when they are installed by a good contractor they always fail long before a pattern imprinted concrete drive way for instance . They are nice to look at but that’s about it as far as I’m concerned .
