You know we did. I worked on the E/A-18G (Growler) in the Navy, and to give you an idea of how expensive military aircraft parts are, the top engine mounting bolts for the two powerplants cost $5,000 per bolt. A flap or rudder servo costs $750,000 to a million bucks a pop.

my favorite fact about the SR-71 is that when it was on the ground, it leaked fuel because they only cared about how it flew and when it was in the air the material expanded and the gaps came together and the leaks stopped

The SR-71 flies so fast that the panels stretch at full speed. They had to design gaps between the panels or the rivets would pop off. If you ever see one on the tarmac you will see pans under the plane to catch all the leaking fuel because of those gaps. At top speed it all seals up and does not leak.
@can_hauler
@can_hauler 3 года назад
They expand due to the heat caused by air friction, pilots would warm there in flight meals by holding them against the cockpit canopy. In fact, the A/C cooled the air going into the cockpit to around -40 F.

The expert mentioned the BUNO as the number of the aircraft, but the Air Force (who actually operated the SR-71) doesn't use the BUNO designation, only the Navy and Marine Corps do. Just something I found interesting.
@b1blancer1
@b1blancer1 3 года назад
You saw a quick little blurb where they said it was called the RS-71. That's actually what it was supposed to be, with the RS standing for Reconnaissance Strike. When Lyndon Johnson announced the existence of the airplane, he mistakenly switched the letters around. This led to some confusion with people wondering if there were two new airplanes. That was quickly cleared up, however. There was only one. Since President Johnson has said Sr-71, then that's what it became, and they came up with Strategic Reconnaissance. You hear some crazy stories about what the top speed was. I'm not sure if was ever known what the absolute top speed would've been. However people who know about this sort of thing say the aerodynamics of the engine intake system would start to break down at anything much past Mach 3.5.
