@@scottcrocker1320 If it sold at auction for $3,000 he walked away with $3,000. Auction house's do not charge 35% fees, most of the time the buyers pay the fees which is why there is a buyers premium added on to the final hammer price and for many things that are so special, valuable or rare, auctions house's will take no fees at all or even pay you for them to auction it for the amount of publicity it would drive to the auction and their business.

It is so sad that the owner of an item that is indeed priceless for him, part of history, has to sell it to buy surfing gear for him and his son, which is no more than a couple of thousands. Having held an Olympic torch, then having to sell it, just like Frank Sinatra said, "you can be flying high in April, shot down in May", life is so full of surprises. I was fortunate to be able to fly down to Fort Collins, Co from Alaska to watch her run the second time. It was very chilly, wet and slushy as it had snowed the night before. A little known fact is that the Olympic Committee had a Torch for the runners to use; OR each runner could purchase their own Torch prior to the event and run with it, and it was theirs to keep. I don't think my daughter would ever sell either one of her Torches.
