Yeah, the general 'rule' is to shoot from the hip around 50% the expected value. For auctionable items this drops a bit... but not down to 25%. He must have had some sort of read on the guy thinking he'd take much less... or maybe he didn't want to fiddle with it for anything less than a nice big payday. Either way, I think the guy should have kept it.

Rick would have been more kind, he has a soft spot for rare, antiquarian books. He would have started at $10k, not 5k. This is an old episode but the value of this book hasn't really gone up that much, given its condition, even with its great provenance, and it's worth ~$25k today. I would feel comfortable offering $13k, maybe 14k with a handwritten, notarized letter explaining the current owner's history with the book and how they acquired it, and associated receipts and documentation.

But he’s the one that accepted the deals. The only the one to blame is himself, don’t try to blame the pawnstars for trying to make money for their business, they were straight toward to offer them that much . You still HAVE TO REMEMBER, the deals on the show is real, everything is upon the sellers decision to either sell it or leave it, the history channel aren’t making you do a performances on your personal item from what you’re trying to do from the start

The old man was the king of the lowball. Rick's top dollar is almost always about 55-60 percent of his experts lowest number, and Rick would have been a lot more interested in this book than the old man was. I think he could have got 12 if Rick was the one negotiating

Should have flown to London and sold it to a Museum. 500 year old book by Issac Newton would have fetched a lot more here in England than in the US. I’m sure he would have got £40,000+ considering what Pokemon cards are going for.
