30:12 - The pawn structures that let you do a Minority Attack are called Karlsbad pawn structures. That name comes from the time the Minority Attack was kinda invented as an idea and that happened on a tournament in Karlsbad. It's not known, who really invented that tactic, but I have read that even Capablanca speaks about a Minority attack in one of his games. I think it was popularized by Anatoly Karpov since of the classical greats he is considered to be the one, who follows Capablanca more closely. Or at least at the time when Karpov was on top of the world of chess.

I legit suffered through watching this with shitty internet just so you get the ad revenue (rather than me downloading it). I really love this channel! It‘s not the biggest chess channel out there but I think you make amazing content and managed to do your own thing despite a relatively saturated market. I also like the way you sound and articulate yourself. Just spreading some love. Was watching this and just kinda thought “Man, I really like his content!” Hope you keep it up.

This type of stuff is super useful. I feel like a lot of chess educators assume we have some kind of background in chess (other than playing it). I've been playing pretty avidly for 2 years now and there was tons of new information here for me. As always, thanks Nelson.

Doubled pawn are not always so weak. One way to make them protect each other is by a third pawn to one of their sides, and forming a triangle formation. Ie the back-doubled pawn protecting a pawn on one of its diagonals, and that pawn in turn protecting the other doubled pawn (which has to be one extra square from your first-doubled pawn). Of course it's still a weaker structure, because if your opponent trades pawn with your front doubled-pawn and you take with your side pawn, then you still end up with doubled pawns (not protected from side-pawns anymore). But if the opponent attacks your side-pawn then your back-doubled pawn can take, and solve the problem.

Hi, just in time! I think for people like me, weak intermediate, the great issue is how to make decisions about when to capture and when to advance in pawn break situations especially in the early moves -- long before we get to big strategy on pawn structure. In some of your other videos (watched piles of them) you deal with a few of these, but there is something about linking early pawn decisions to overall strategy that one lacks.

I like your videos Nelson, but I cannot believe that you put out a "complete" guide to pawn structure without mentioning the ways that pawn structures can create weak squares. It is kind of an important consideration in pawn structures.

As an absolute beginner there is a good chance I might be wrong, but I think I've heard the "sicilian backwards D-pawn" referred to as the "benoni structure" or "benoni pawns" by multiple people in relation to the kid, pirc and modern as being the reason for kinda needing to study the benoni as well.
