In this video I examine the name 'The Long Peace' for the period between the Napoleonic Wars and World War One. After the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte the Congress of Vienna created peace in Europe. During this period Britain was the uncontested hegemon in the world, with little contest from the other Great Powers. There was a great reduction in European Great Power conflicts, but the term really doesn't take the rest of the world into account, where wars were abound. It's an extremely Eurocentric term.
For more information about the post-Napoleonic world order I recommend these video's by Historia Civilis: • The Congress of Vienna...

I feel like Pax Britannicana is much better suited name than the long peace. The peace was barely there and many deadly wars still happened. The Taiping Rebelion, American Civil War and the Crimean War are just one of many examples of the more deadlier ones. Pax Britannicana feels more suited as alot of these ware usually had the involvement of Britain in some way, shape or form and mostly went in tandom with British intrests. The scramble for Africa is a primary example with minds like 3rd Marquess of Salisbury expertly carving up the continent to Britain's favour for the most part. *Tanganyika* *cough* Overall it feels like Pax Britannica is generally a better name because in many ways Britain was the most influencial nation on the globe between 1815 and 1914 and no nation was able to surpass Britain in its Dominance before the devestating WW1. Overall, Pax Britannicana for the win 😂. Nice video!

Pax Britanica is good because it references Pax Romana, which was only peaceful for the Roman’s. Tribes were still being invaded and slaughtered during Pax Romana, it was just the Roman core that was relatively peaceful. People around the world were being invaded and slaughtered during pax Britannica, it was just Europe that remained *relatively* peaceful.

Writing this in advance to watching the video (will edit later) - I like both Pax Britannica and the Long Peace. While the Victorian Era certainty had a lot of war, and especially deadly war, it would be hard to simultaneously deny the fact that these deadly wars always stayed within their own respective countries/regions, and never spread to become true continental or global wars. The American Civil War and Taiping Rebellion were truly massive in destruction, but still, were contained wars within their own countries. As so, the concert of europe's goal of maintaining a world without large multinational conflicts was secured, and thus comes the term of the "Long Peace". Pax Britannica also works because Britain was the main economic, social, and naval power of the age. It essentially had all the tools it needed to rule the world, and it did so. Challenging Britain internationally was basically impossible but to only the greatest empires of the age. Britain, in many ways, was a global power that almost matched the idea of "global authority" the Pax Romana was known to the romans for, but more in an economic and diplomatic sense than the military sense that Rome triumphed. There are some counterarguments, in my opinion, to the Long Peace, however. For example, is it truly fair to call a period the "Long Peace" if brutal conflicts, although limited to certain regions, still happened during it? I'd say this argument is understandable, and in some cases probably correct to use. The Victorian Era was still bloody and brutal in many ways. But simultaneously, it doesn't address the point of where the term itself of the Long Peace came from- the fact that empires rarely had big conflicts with each other. So I guess, depending on the usage, maybe the term is correct, or maybe it isn't.
@vihaankaushal7452

Pax Britanicana make sense if your talking about British supremacy from 1815-1914. However, there was no *peace* during that time. The revolutions of 1848, the Crimean war, franco Prussian war, Taiping rebellion, the American civil war, Russo-Japnese war..... and a few more. Was Britain the most powerfull nation on earth during all these wars? yes, however it was not a peacefull era lol it was just an era where the empire would shine.

You seem to have omitted or missed one of the key components in this timeframe being associated with peace. There were European wars, sure, and a lot of people have died, but they were very short when compared to the previous centuries. I remember seeing a graph somewhere on youtube which demonstrated that the chance of there being a war somewhere in the world (or just in Europe, I can't really remember) in a randomly picked point in time has gone down about five times after the Congress of Vienna.

As a BlackAmerican of British/Irish descent I see nothing wrong with the name and think it should remain. But I’m certain that I’m biased because I’m an English speaker and an Anglophile. Anyway good video I do think you maybe slightly biased against the name bc you’re not a native English speaker and the name is British-centric.

IMHO it's more accurate to call it the Metternich System or the System of Congresses. Europe was fresh out of the Napoleonic Wars and everyone wanted peace for some time (similar to after WWI and a bit more successfully after WWII). This meant they avoided conflict in Europe at all and tried to keep disputes localized and minor if they couldn't be resolved by diplomacy. The system failed pretty badly with the Crimean War and instead of learning their lesson of how devastating industialized warfare would be, the Great Power doubled down on their efforts.

To me Pax Britannia is either just a narative from the British to present themselfs as keepers of peace, when in reality they fought wars often and not just wars to protect the balance of powers but also to expand their own power or it means that there was no threat to the British Isles. Also the whole balance of powers idea seems to me like that it heavily favours the British, every expansion by other Europeans is a danger of the balance of powers while Britain who conquers whole continents is perfectly balanced and in no way a threat, for example Russia wants to take Constantinople and that is a problem, but Britain taking the Suez and Gibralter is not.
