On Jan. 6, 2024, AZDPS troopers were closing a lane of traffic on northbound I-17 for a collision scene ahead and positioned a fully marked patrol vehicle with emergency lights activated in the far-right lane. While road flares were being placed for visibility, a sergeant at the scene observed a small white vehicle approaching the closure at a high rate of speed. He attempted to use his flashlight to get the driver’s attention, but the driver failed to slow down or move over. The sergeant was able to run out of the way just before the car came through the scene, narrowly missing him and striking the back of the patrol vehicle.
Fortunately, neither the sergeant, other troopers on the scene, nor the at-fault driver were injured. Further investigation determined impairment was not a factor, and the driver was cited for failure to maintain a speed reasonable and prudent to avoid a collision.
Just a second of inattention can have potentially fatal consequences. Focus on your driving, and always move over or slow down for vehicles with flashing lights in the road ahead.
