Almost every cell in our body has a molecular clock, and those clocks are coordinated by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) which serves as the body's master clock and helps regulate our lives in a 24-hour pattern commonly known as Circadian Rhythm.
When we pay attention to this cycle, and regulate our activities accordingly, all is well. But when we shift our eating, drinking, and sleeping patterns outside of this natural rhythm, circadian disruption may occur. This can lead to serious health issues. But with simple, non-invasive lifestyle changes, we can support our biological clocks to optimize performance, prevent and treat disease, and delay the onset of age-related illnesses. Emily Manoogian, Ph.D. is a researcher at the Salk Institute who studies the intricate interaction between our body’s biological rhythms and the timing of our daily habits. These internal rhythms interact with our daily behaviors of when and how much we sleep, eat, and exercise. As the head of human research in Dr. Satchin Panda’s lab at Salk, Emily monitors the timing of these behaviors in thousands of people around the world to gain insight on how they relate to health. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

As a nurse I’ve experienced working different schedules. But if I’m hired for night shift, I’m working ONLY night shift. No rotating. It’s unhealthy and absolutely dangerous for myself and my patients. It’s also highly important to not deviate your home schedule from your work schedule. If you work nights and sleep during the day then you should be staying up at night and sleeping during the day on your days off as well.

Thanks to modern age where we have so many disturbances, I do not see humanity being able to get healthy sleep. Everywhere in the cities we have lights that are never turned off. We do not have nature, but hear various engines working day and night. Phones, computers, lights at home, and our lifestyles negatively affected the way we function. So unless we manage to control those external factors, there is no way most humans will be able to sleep undisturbed and at normal time.
@xolang

@CptGoldbeak 5 лет назад
Probably, yes, but modern lives are not necessarily exposing us to those clues. This video tells us eating is really important. A lot of people don't know that, and when sunlight is not something you can use to determine the time then eating becomes even more crucial.
@stefan1924
@stefan1924 5 лет назад
This means that it would be best to go with the natural rythm and get up when the sun rises and go to bed when it goes down again. Early early late late free night night night free free early early late late night etc. Im doing this for 3 years straight now and i havent felt better because i can take care of different problems or cravings my body or mind brings up. But im still concerned about what happens after years. And i cant keep a shedule because of that shift module. Also foodwise, i eat occasionaly. Sometimes 3 times a day,sometimes 2 times within 3 days. And i think thats because of shifting

Don't know about 12 hours of fasting she mentions, I have my doubts about this, as I don't know of any official recommendations with regard to this long fast. Wouldn't it take into consideration the windows between meals during the day as well? Would appreciate the notes with the scientifical data she refers to. Is it just one study? Or is it a meta analysis and official recommentations? Quite important to mention, because why would we just believe what she says?

it’s very well established as a field. See dr panda “circadian code” too. research on circadian rhythms has led to blue light filters on glasses, and the fact that smart phones and laptops now have nighttime filters. As for the food, a 12 hour fast really isn’t long if we sleep for 8 hours. Our bodies need downtime to process calories and eliminate waste.

This is also about generalizations. Individuals may not fit the 1 standard deviation of the study, this is normal. As more study is done these concepts can be tailed to an individual. The takeaways are stay on a schedule for sleep and eating, and do not eat and drink only water 3 or fewer hours before bed.

I understand that it is a normal thing but just because it is very common doesn't make it ok. I was just surprised that she never mentioned how badly schools are messing up teen's circadian rhythms. An average teen receives melatonin between 12am and 6am and they start to wake up naturally around 9 am to 12pm. Obviously the world can't run on those times but schools can change a little bit.

That is a weird theory to be honest, especially from a biological point of view (except maybe the day/night reality). Didn't the modern human develop in a very irregular lifestyle? We ate when we wer able to gather food, we slept when we were safe (probably with many interruptions) etc. Why is the human body so dependent on routine? I feel like there is a wide variety of these effects between different individuals as well. Idk if I'd take everything from this tedtalk at face value.
@groundhogb
@groundhogb 5 лет назад
That was ancient human being, not modern. They ate when they gathered food, because they had their fair share with starvation in between meals to find food. You know how difficult it is to find food in the wild? Now she was saying 12 hr block of fasting. Does 8 pm to 8 am sleeping count for 12 hrs, or only when your awake? Kinda leans on the side of calorie constriction for a healthy body weight and BMI. I know first hand circadian rhythms exist and I pay attention to them. Like an easy one. I notice I get tired around 930 pm at night. If I listen to that rhythm and go to sleep, I will fall asleep instantly and sleep good. Ignore the rhythm and keep watching netflix, I wake back up around 1015 pm, then find it difficult to fall asleep until my next sleep cycle kicks in around 1 am. Good sleep is very healthy and important. Human works better on routine always. Im sure you have automatic routine, if you think about your usually day to day living.

"Circadian disruption occurs when those internal circadian clocks are challenged by conflicting external cues." Yes, but that disruption can also be intrinsic. It could be damaged eyes, or having bad genes in the SCN. Not all circadian disorders are "self-selected".
