This show was televised on CBS Sports Network. The USBC, PBA, and CBS own all the rights, I do not. This upload is for those who don't have that channel available and would like to watch the show.
Player's Championship: $40,000 Masters: $30,000 US Open: $30,000 Not even two years ago, first prize for those tournaments was $50,000 each. What the hell happened?
Bowling is run by fucking morons who have no clue how to grow the sport at all. Fortunately many of the players do have a clue and are doing a phenomenal job trying to grow the sport. And, to be honest, no one watches bowling anymore, because it's not a rigged-for-entertainment soap opera like many other major sports that have many more viewers (NBA, NFL). Bowling used to be bigger than basketball and hockey, man.
When I was younger I had planned to use bowling as a side job when tournaments like these were $100,000+ for first and the prize pool for half the field was pretty decent (~$1000 or so+).
Those are still pathetic prizes for first prize at a sport's best annual tournaments. Look at how much Tommy Jones won when he first came on tour or how much WRW won in the 1990s. It was insanity.
After seeing the prize fund for a tournament like this. No wonder someone like Mike Fagan went back to school, got he’s degree and actually found a steady job and income. Nothing against the PBA but wow, they need better sponsorships and management.
Takayuki, Josh already has a degree in Business Administration. He's a pretty savvy businessman in his own right. I believe that he owns three pro shops plus he's sponsoring his wife in her business which is also doing quite well.
Marshall Holman is one of the most annoying, if not the most annoying, announcer. I was never a huge Randy Peterson fan, but he sounds like an angel compared to Marshall. His commentary when players miss their shot is horrible. He needs to be fired.
I'll take 30k for a few months salary at a "typical" desk job....where do I sign up for that??? Would love to know what you do because your ideas on salaries are severely skewed.
I think it depends on where you work in the country. But in big cities, your typical desk job is pulling that much money before taxes if not more (DC, SF, NY, etc). But cost of living is also higher.
I know this is super late to respond to this comment, but I was a part of that crowd. I can promise you that it was louder than this, the picked-up audio for the crowd must be muffled. An example is at 17:10 when it sounds like 8 people are clapping and everyone is actually giving a standing ovation. I will tell you it was a little quieter in the crowd when graham and butturff bowled because nobody really knew them at the time (course we all know who Jakob is now lol).
On Graham choosing bowling over hockey: "made the right call" lol. If he was anywhere near as good at hockey, I'd say he definitely didn't make the right call. $30,000 for winning a major championship. Smh.
$30,000 ???????....REALLY ????...A MAJOR Championship and all the brutal conditions and competition and this tournament can only pay the CHAMPION $30,000 !!!!!!!!!! No wonder there is a LOT of bowlers that don't go PRO, they can make a LOT more bowling the tournaments around their hometowns....SMDH !!!!!!!!!
Jace Welsh: YOU are an idiot !!!!!!! What do they do outside of bowling ???? For what they do FOR the sport, you'd think they'd get paid a LOT better...Think about that dumba$$...
Really. I don't know about that one, you're telling me that they aren't in it for the prize at the end? Tell the field that they're bowling for "the love of the sport", I doubt you'd have a field at all. I mean, the whole definition of professional is - " a person engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime." It's a shame that a top-level bowler in the entire world can't make a substantial living exclusively from his/her sport.
+jace welsh they do do it because they love it but it's gotta be hard for them to get by on those kind of payouts considering all the money it costs just for them to travel to these tournamnets enter the tournent. there expenses outside of bowling. I'm sure they make money in other parts of the bowling industry to but that's a terrible payout for a major.
making this tournament invite only is stupid. they could've had at least 100-200 more entries. thats a lot of money into the prize fund. way to go Tom.
Having bowled a stepladder tournament in the past, I can tell you there is a dedication like no other sport to win one. Other sports' athletes get paid many times more just to show up, but these guys spend their lives in bowling alleys for a "chance" at a middle class wage? No tournament like this should pay less than 250k for top prize.
Agreed. But the real breakthrough was when Rhino switched balls to the Crux. That ball was the perfect match up and everytime it hit the pocket it carried like crazy. Fach used that Motive Tank Rampage urethane ball which killed it in game 1, but he made the critical mistake all modern players seem to make when trying to use urethane on a modern condition, they fail to realize after one game that the ball will become waterlogged and lose its reaction. He should have switched to the same exact ball, but a fresh one. But he did not and tried to play the game 1 ball for the first 7 frames with horrible results. Then he switched to a fresh ball, a fresh Rampage Tank and it was hitting and carrying but it was way too late.
Are you sure? The "Lock" is a white ball with red and violet and a gigantic LOCK logo on it. I thought the ball he was using in the final game was the original "Crux" not the Alpha Crux.
@@nordattack Crux has a lot of purple, Rhino's did not; the picture here does have more white than I've seen on a lot of Locks: 123bowl.com/bowling-balls/storm/lock/
Rino Page 👍👍👍first time watching you 3months ago ! You’re one of my idol already !! Norm,Pete,Rino!!!😎👍love watching you gentlemen 👏🏻👍 you deserved it more to win that U.S. open !!!
This is a great tournament because for the past 4 years a belmo or a svenson or a tackett or rash hasn't won it. Its nice to see a first time major champion win so many times in a row, wish that would be able to happen more often but some people are just so good
Bowl 44 games, beat over 300 bowlers, gets only $30,000.00. Professional golfer Justin Thomas wins FedEx cup, beats 175 golfers, earns 10 million dollars. Both sports are equally boring to watch, why the hell can't bowling get any damn sponsors!?!
This is only one tiny part of it, but think attendance. At most centers for most PBA televised tournaments, you'll see a crowd of maybe 200 people, including for majors. At the Bridgestone Invitational here in Akron, there were tens of thousands of people there for each round. That's a lot of people paying to watch.
They used to make triple that in the 50s and 60s hahaha. It's the popularity... But it's coming back so they will make more money soon. And it's 64 games dude! Fucking marathon. On 3 different patterns..
John Doe bowling gained a bad reputation back then that it's currently recovering from. Used to be the air in most centers was borderline unbreathable because of cigarette smoke, and from this and other issues people just stopped bowling. Like I said though, it's recovering, and despite what most say, youth participation is on the rise, so the sport is actually making a slow comeback.
james borg it doesn't need to be equal, by any means. It makes it more challenging. If you watched bowling AT ALL, you'd realize that they are never totally symmetrical
My boy Tommy Jones just missed the cut. Also Wes didn't have any help breaking down the right side of the lanes and he should have used a more dull ball.
Can't manipulate ball surface during a game. And there was already a 1 board of margin at most from either throwing it in the gutter or going through the headpin for Malott.
All the people saying Randy should do the announcing instead of Marshall, I disagree. I would much rather hear Marshall's "Captain Obvious" talk than listen to Randy's repetitive sob stories about him and that bloody 8-pin lol 😅
Gotta feel for Butturff, to absolutely dominate qualifying and matchplay only to come up short in the title match. It's gotta be devastating. We'll definitely see Butturff more in the future. But congrats to Rhino for finally winning a major.
Brian Cloutier I don't know what possesses someone to start with urethane. Get a ball that's got some drive and swing it If you have to till you have no room or a lot of over under urethane is meant for dry conditions. Ball will not move like it should under heavy oil unless you have an incredible rev rate hense Svenson having great success with it personally watched Graham bowl about 2 months ago at an expo was impressed he's a great bowler but just doesn't seem smart to start with urethane of any nature
Tyler, Thanks for the reply. The lanes I bowl on are wood and fairly dry. I have had pretty good success except that one night. I had a 260 with the urethane a week before. The reactive balls tend to snap to hard at the back end.
Brian Cloutier they snap hard and that is exactly how you carry pins. Try a solid ball. The pearls will snap on the end and the solids will roll earlier and sometimes cleaner through the lane. I bowled on wood lanes for the first 10 years In my hometown house. Typically you have more miss area and more pin carry with reactive resin balls. If your just a crazy accurate bowler or the lanes are super dry urethane can be a great ball to have. I own and have drilled bunches of both.
It was an October 2015 release, one of the best balls that was out there on the market but unfortunately it's been retired already earlier this year after the Code Red came out. You might still be able to find some pieces in some pro shops old storage or bowling ball forums though.
What does that mean? Graham threw some BS shots and they had ridiculous carry. He took his L and this is the last time him and his equipment will grace these lanes most likely
YES MY BOIIII RHINO!!!! Was just telling my friend last week that rhino is my favorite left handed bowler and this is why. Great fricken bowling rhino.
Marshall Holman, great bowler, terrible announcer. He'd be good for announcing bowling on the radio because all he does is tell us exactly what we just saw. Randy tells us what's going on technically from a professional's perspective.
Work your way up to it, otherwise you're not going to be ready and it's going to destroy you mentally. I know you posted this a year ago, but still. I wish you the best.
Okay some of u guys complaining about the prize fund is ridiculous to me where else r u going to make that in one day winning a tournament either way it's still a good pay for one day i don't even make that in a year from being a pizza cook for a year.
Well, I'm sure if you were the best pizza cook in the world, you'd make substantially more. The compensation should reflect the achievement of winning a major championship, and in comparison with other sports, it is ridiculous.
M Smith Not in this area and it's not that great of a job either way to me it's still not a bad pay for one day plus look it walter ray williams junior he's made the most money from being a professional bowler over the years it is what it is also.
DAVID Dudley DAVID Dudley it’s not one day. I was there all week with the players. It was grueling 12 hour plus bowling for a week. The entry fee is high too.
He's one of the few pros that actually talked to me on a live RU-vid feed. While he isn't "in shape", neither are any of the other people on this telecast except that Canadian.
Yeah I was talking to him when he was guest hosting a tournament on RU-vid and I was debating whether someone should loft and move left or bowl up the right gutter with plastic or urethane. He agreed I had a good point. I bet many PBA bowlers would have cussed me out. But he also explained why it might be hard to do that too.
Not hating on Rhino, but he got the most inefficient release. By cup he wrist a lot, but not uncupping the wrist smoothly. Lots of wrist power but low rev. Not saying he is a bad player, but definitely not a ideal physical model to follow.
jjpiazzajr. 666 yeah I'm not hating on his form. Although he did mention he had to alter it slightly. But he's incredible. It was back in 2013 but to think he went from struggling to throw 8 pounds to US open champ is beautiful
