I’m sure we’ve ALL thought of doing this to a PC at some point. But is building a computer in a mini fridge ACTUALLY worth the effort?

For those of you who didn't want to watch the whole thing: The mini fridge doesn't work, and _can't_ work, because it's effectively an insulated box with no airflow. The fridge has to run continuously just to pump out the heat that would dissipate naturally if the computer were exposed to ambient air instead. The only reason fridges work to keep food cold is because food isn't generating its own heat; once the fridge has cooled off your food, your food _stays_ cold, and the fridge only has to run for a few minutes every hour to pump out the little bit of heat that leaked in through the insulation.

I think you'd want a radiator or a plate heat exchanger, I don't think you'd want all the junk that makes it's way into a swimming pool circulating through your loop. If you building a new pool, instead of retrofitting an existing pool, you could embed PVC plumbing into the concrete floor of the pool.

@Hubwood
@Hubwood 6 лет назад
Napoleon Blownapart actually AC air is pretty dry, isn't it? And in a car you use the ac if it's damp inside to dry it out....
@Napoleon_Blownapart
@Napoleon_Blownapart 6 лет назад
the air itself is dry because the water condensate on the unit cold grills, but some of this cool down moist gets into the air itself and turn to water when it touches surfaces continuously. like metal. thats why ac units produce water, and fridges too. what im saying is, ac does not remove all the water out of the air, it cools it down so it will be more prone to condensation on surfaces. thats why you cant just plug in a pipe directly from the ac and the pc, if you could, there would be already ac cooling on pc's. but you can cool down a room where a pc is as long you are not planing to bring your room to fridge like temps.
@Napoleon_Blownapart

boffifis1 That is AFTER it has been cooled. Cold air still contains moisture, so when the build is in the mini fridge, (after very pro-longed exposure) it will probably get some form of damage? I could be wrong... Just a thought I had.
@Decent60
@Decent60 9 лет назад
MarcusMeyerTricks This is why he also said don't use mechanical drives (that would draw moisture quickly and wreck it). Now, because it's not really dropping below 0 C, it wouldn't rack up moisture quickly. However, they do build refrigerated server rack units, which normally have space at the bottom (or options for) case system. Those also draw a chunk of the moisture out and generally are gravity fed rather than conduction (which is where a lot of the moisture comes from).
@paktahn
@paktahn 9 лет назад
MarcusMeyerTricks silica gel in a vacuum = no moisture only way i can think of to safely prevent moisture
@paktahn
@paktahn 9 лет назад
Decent60 actually the mechanical drives should be sealed it isnt moisture it is the expansion and contraction of the materials that they are made of under extreme temps could cause problems with the close tolerances with the parts when they are moving thats why he mentioned only do it on a dieing drive cause sometimes cooling it will make it start to work again long enough to recover data

I think I understand why. it has to do with the pronunciation of the word refrigerator. The word was simply being mispronounced for so long that an errant abbreviation was created for it. You see "frigus" means cold but as you can see the g in "frigus" should be pronounced like the g in "grab". However, somehow people started pronouncing the g in refrigerator like the g in "hedge". Hence, when they went to abbreviate the world they added a d because that is the only time you shouldn't pronounce a g like you would in the word "grab", when its preceded by a d. That being said "frig" is a perfectly acceptable spelling of the abbreviation and is actually a listed spelling of the abbreviation in Websters dictionary.

To solve the no air flow problem, you use a small air conditioner instead of an refrigerator, rigged with the air flow going across the motherboard and the better the enclosure is to confine the air flow to across the motherboard only the better. I've actually tested this somewhat by putting my test bench next to an air conditioner floor vent and using cardboard walls to reflect the air across the motherboard. It looked kinda like a small garage with doors open both ends, with the vent on one side and the air flowing out the other. The computer ran unbelievably cool with the CPU below 90 degrees Fahrenheit under load. I wonder if you would need a CPU cooler under this setup.

It's the exact same principle. A refrigerator that has a lower set point on the thermostat. The same problem still exists. For this to work, you need to build a small room/case that will be cooled with an AC system, not a fridge. Just think of an actual commercial computer room full of servers. They don't just use a regular AC system like you have serving the rest of the adjoining offices. Those big Leibert units (yes I have a background in HVAC) were designed specifically for such uses. They run continuously rather than tripping on and off. There are smaller systems made for smaller computer rooms, and perhaps one could make a little closet with the indoor half of the system and their PC in there, and the outdoor half outdoors. Not exactly cheap, or practical but then again there's always somebody that will do it just because they can and no one else has.

Well, honestly it depends on how big the freezer is. A rather large (20ish cubic foot) freezer might be able to keep ambient temperatures down for an hour or so. If you had access to freezers that large restaurants use, which are the size of a room, then it could keep ambient temperature down for quite a while (possibly indefinitely). If you had access to a meat packing plant that processes frozen meat... But honestly, if you're going to do that, you might as well just build a computer in the antarctic. You could also just ask your local grocer how much it would cost to lease a spot in the back of their freezer section to put your computer. The larger the freezer, the less the thermal energy from the computer is going to make an impact. But you're right, it will always make an impact no matter how small.

There's no fucking way you can put hole family 1 week or even a few days worth of food in one of those... What do you do to survive in Denmark then?
@FelixNielsen
@FelixNielsen 8 лет назад
Suffice to say that we are a bit better at... restraining ourselves, but I'm sure that for some danes it would be a huge inconvenience, and as it is the trend points toward the american way to. Likewise our population, on average, become more and more obese, we have more health problem, and so on and so forth. In short, you and your family likely eat a whole lot more than you actually need to, statistically speaking that is, though considering that comment... (no I don't mean to offend, but really?) But you haven't even heard the worst part. I actually have a fridge of around this size, but it contains a freezer to, so that the actual capacity of the fridge is maybe 75% of the one showcased here, though of course I only need to feed myself, so at least there's that. I any case, it is certainly possible to get by with something like this, you just have to go about it a bit differently.
@HormigaZ
@HormigaZ 8 лет назад
With all my respects, I understand your point and I highly doubt it. In my fridge there is only food for launch/dinner for 3/4 days, and it is quite full every time I fill up. Then, I don't believe there is a difference in "restrainings" as to be honest, I don't really even eat that much neither does anyone on my family. Of course, in fact, if you plan it and go shopping often you can survive with this as well, but doesn't feel "normal" fridge to me at all. Nice conversation, enjoy. Cheers.
@FelixNielsen
@FelixNielsen 8 лет назад
It's really a rather silly debate, but let me explain it like this. A typical day contain 3 meal for a typical dane, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast will usually be cornflakes or similar, thus you only need room for the milk. lunch traditionally, though that is changing, consists of rye bread with butter and and whatever topping (for lag of a better word) you prefer. Again, not something that takes up a lot of space, and the bread at least can be kept outside the fridge. And then there's dinner, and again the traditional danish dinner is not exactly extravagant. It could for example consist of ground beef, potatoes, gravy and perhaps some readymade vegetables, which will be kept in the freezer, not the fridge. And not only that, it is not unusual to dine on leftovers. All in all I can agree that it may be difficult to stuff a fridge of this size with food for a typical family of four for an entire week, but half a week? Certainly, and with some effort, also longer.

There's much better ways to benefit from the heat exchanger because a fridge is insulated meaning sure it cools stuff down, by pulling the heat out, but it also traps heat in, and a PC is pumping out heat faster than a normal fridge could cool it down so you'd at very least need to have the door open to let the majority of the heat escape, at least then the heat exchanger at the back has some benefit of exposing some part of the system to a cooling effect, but really what you'd want to do to benefit from a fridge like heat exchange system is to gut the fridge and only use the heat exchanger with the heat absorber inside your case and the heat expeller end outside of the case, the problem I'd want to address in this case is to negate any chance of condensation that might get introduced by the extremely cool bars, which might be mitigated with some kind of plastic covering, or find some way just to introduce the cooled air from the heat exchange into the system, essentially think of it more like an air conditioner than a fridge

You do not put the computer inside the fridge. Instead you put 1/2" copper tubes inside the fridge in a giant spiral and then blow air through the tubes with one tube leaving the fridge aimed like a nozzle directly on to the CPU lid. That way you can still store your beer in the fridge.

I thibk it could work with a defferend fridge. A fridge with a opening on it like you see in supermarkets

I'd watercool the pc, use an old fridge with the serpentine on the back, put a big car radiator fan on the top then build a case around the fridge to give airflow, then i'd put a full bridge rectifier and a capacitor to power the fan with the input from the FBR going in series with the fridge itself so that the fan only turns on when the fridge is on, the fan can take 10A+ so it is very easy to put it in serial without it burning.

In my experience, a mini-fridge can barely keep itself below room temperature. It would be interesting to see this tried with a real fridge.

BUILD A COMPUTER IN A AIR CONDISHER!!
@Chuckiele
@Chuckiele 8 лет назад
There is a methode called "aqua chilling" which is basically a watercooled system with the water being cooled by an air conditioner instead of a radiator. The problem is, that the aqua chiller needs more power to cool the computer than the computer itself so that youre actually paying twice the electricity bill. Also you need to put the air conditioning part outside of your room because it is creating an insane amount of heat so that you need loooong tubes and holes inside your walls. Also there is the problem of condensation: If youre cooling your computer down too much there will be dripping water which will eventually destroy it. But the idea isnt that bad ^^

At the beginning when he's standing near the door frame. As a contractor, I've hung many doors in a lot of different places. You get used to their size and width. Seening Linus next to one is a good indication of how short he is. I'd put him somewhere around 5'1'' - 5'3''

Yes it would. I've seen it done on older cpus. Biggest issue is freezing, it gets too cold. So you still need to insulate the motherboard. You should google it, it definitely is a thing.

the freezer would have a similar effect, freezers arent built for constant use with maximum power, just like fridges arent, freezers simply have to maintain a lower temperature.
@mp-uy9sv

+Freddy Looger what if the computer was submerged in a special oil that does not freeze below zero similar to antifreeze , and then the whole thing put in a freezer , with the freezer modified so it bypasses the on & off cycle so it runs permanently , ( like alot of people do this to bar fridges for home brewing beer) ? that should eliminate condensation & freezing and the oil should circulate by pumps inside the submerged case so it will be super recooled constantly
