Should you Hibernate, Shut down, or put your PC to sleep? 

I turn off my PC, unplug it, and then completely disassemble it and place all of the components in static resistance bags, and then I reassemble it when it's time to start back up.

I pour water on mine until it sparks and shuts off, then in the morning I use a blow drier until it powers up. I never have any problems with that method.

Sleep mode when I go to bed. (5-7 hrs) Hibernate when I go to work (9-12 hrs) On for the rest of the time because I have no life outside of the above.

I throw away the computer and get a new one whenever I need to use one again. It's a pricey lifestyle, but I haven't had any issues with my computer(s)

Well my pc sounds like a bloody jet engine so I’m turning it off as much as possible to hear my own thoughts.

I shut down and unplug, no good reason i just newer felt comfortable knowing appliances had power while i sleep. Guess its a irrational fear of fire or maby deep down i fear they are gonna revolt in my sleep and take over Earth.

i have a friend who never shuts off his pc, and i've been mentioning every now and then that i think he should turn it off when he's not using it. and a few weeks ago, his pc died and needed a replacement part to work again. i ain't saying i knew that this would happen, but i fucking knew that that shit would happen

How I do it is: Turn it on when I wake up in the morning, use it a little. Turn it off when I leave for work. Turn it on when I get home I turn it off when I go to bed

For Desktops... You might want to turn it off AND unplug it if Lightening is in the area. For all computers... Another good reason to shut it off (or at least sleep or hibernate) is to protect your computer from Viruses (i.e. even though you aren't doing anything, someone else may remotely penetrate your defenses and access it while it's unattended).

Sadly Hibernation Mode is Gone in the latest Windows 10 Update..

I'm so old school, I always turn my PC OFF when I go to sleep.

I shut my computer off every night because my PSU is super loud and the case has super bright LEDs on the power button. If I don't shut it down, it's nearly impossible to sleep.

I turn my PC on in the morning and off at night. Another consideration that Linus didn't mention is that if you leave it running for several days without shutting down, your OS can become unstable. That's why the most common fix for an issue with your phone is to turn it off, cause no one really does it.

I am rendering in Adobe AME and need to transport my laptop without shutting down and losing my render progress. So I need to know if hibernation or sleep mode would be okay to transport my laptop safely without the hdd beig damaged. Looks like hibernation is my best bet.

Besides, you are much more likely to replace your computer due to new technologies and features, than from wear and tear from shutting off the machine.

I have a smart meter for my energy. I can tell you that watching youtube videos all night uses the same amount of power as boiling the kettle once for the coffee to keep me awake to watch them.

Great video,I have started using the sleep mode for this new PC build that I recently put together because as you mention in your video there are concerns as to how much wear and tear completely shutting down a PC can cause on the PC components.I bought SSD drives which is what I will be using from now on and I have to say that this new PC build is fantastic,once the PC goes into sleep mode if I didn't know better I would swear that the PC is completely powered off and waking the PC is a snap.I decided to use sleep mode because when the PC is running the cooling fans are also running which means that the PC is drawing in dust when I am not using it.I decided against completely powering off the PC because I share my PC with my other half and she doesn't like having to turn the PC on from a cold boot so sleep mode in my opinion fits the bill perfectly.Thank you for another great video and may God bless you and your family.

you forgot a point. Dust build up. Obviously having your pc on 24/7 will make the dust build up very fast compared to turning it of(or sleep etc.)

watching this in 2019 i learned something My brother has 32 gigs of ram and was getting blue screens. I asked him what he was doing, which was mostly video games, opening 1000 applications, and *putting his computer to sleep at night* It turned out after many months of periodic troubleshooting that one of his ram sticks was not working properly. Something about read/write errors when we ran a ram test. When we pulled that ram stick out, it solved the problems I figure what happened must be putting the computer to sleep was putting a chunk of data onto the bad ram stick and when it restarted, the bad data caused an unrecoverable error leading to the Blue screen.

My PC is on all hours of the day, generally. If I'm home, I'm using it frequently. I use videos on the computer to help me fall asleep, and they're on loop while I'm sleeping. I looked up this video to see if this is bad for the computer.

I use my PC (desktop) for the longest period time in the morning, which is when I write my tales, research, or shop.I step away from my PC for 2 to 3 hours intervals, so when I step away from it during the day, I simply put it to sleep for those few hours. Then I come back to it and check things -- Facebook etc. Then when I step away again I put it in sleep mode. But at night, when I go to bed, I turn it off for those 6 to 8 hours. Then it's rinse & repeat starting in the morning. 1. Use, sleep @ day breaks. 2. Bed time, off.

I'm going to be a bit rebellious... I only lock my computer. (Restart it once every few weeks or so to flush memory)

Best advice is to hibernate instead of sleep if you are going to one of the 2 instead of shutdown... but I suggest that you save your work first and exit if you were typing something in a password protected document for example. It does not matter if you have a hard disk drive or not as either way it should not take too long to turn back on, it should still be faster then if you just booted up the computer instead.

I have an ssd and only 8gb ram and waking up from hibernation takes way longer than booting normally. The ssd was more expensive than the entire pc.

I'm not an expert. But, from hearing experts talk about this, I think one can fairly assume that the only thing that could potentially die from turning off your pc every day is your HDD, which is one of the cheapest components on your pc (atm, you can get 1tb hdd for 30 bucks). You should back up important data anyways. And that's only after years of use, so I think it's worth it, since pretty much pc runs really smoothly after a fresh start.

Great video as always Linus. Just a question, don't all electronics components have an Average Rated Lifetime Hours ? Meaning that leaving the PC On all the time is a matter of necessity (Server, Remote Access, etc) rather than a convenience. Although I'm almost certain that the average rated lifetime hours of PC components is very high, but it still is there. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :-)

I used to leave my PC on all the time but I've recently switched to placing it into sleep mode when I"m gone or when I go to sleep at night

For the past 4 years I only put my laptop to sleep. Perfectly fine. The only times I do a restart or shutdown is when I'm troubleshooting, installing updates, or upgrading a piece of hardware.

My pc doesnt have a power button and my psu power switch is broken, so i just kick my pc until it shuts off

I remember choosing to hibernate my pc, luckily nothing got wrong though it may fail. Better not hibernate if you were to plug the electricity off or else it would stop working among bsod. I have already tested it many times on my pc but if you were to choose sleep, then no worries at all.

Sleep if you are gonna be gone for a little bit, Like grabbing lunch, going to pick up someone etc. Hibernate if you are gonna be gone for a while; If you are like going to bed or to the beach, etc. Shut down if you want Shut down if you are moving a computer somewhere else.

I always turn mine off every night, I had a teacher that only ever put here laptop to sleep it got sooooooooooooo slow because of memory leaks that she was gonna buy a new one I restarted it for her and she was amazed at how fast it was (also it was a macbook pro)

I haven't shut down my pc for 3 years. I got it 3 years ago.

I used to just leave my PC on all the time, or put it in sleep mode, but my neighborhood has frequent power outages, basically anytime it rains, the power goes out. Plus i lost one PC due to a lightning striking a tree outside my house (took out my modem and tv cable box as well). I work 12 hour shifts every day, so my PC is not in use for up to 18 hours a day, so i just shut it down, and unplug it so i don't have to worry about power surges or lightning strikes while im away at work, but i power it up the moment i get home every day. But when im home on the weekends, i usually just leave it on all the time, and just shut it down and unplug it when a storm is coming through. Been doing it like this for about 20 years, and haven't had any issues with it. Although i have heard from some sources that liquid cooled PC's its better not to leave them turned off for long periods of time (like many days or weeks) as bacteria can build up in the water, and gunk up the insides of your pump, ect..

My laptop only takes a minute or less to turn on, so I just shut it off when I am not using it. Considering I use it in -20 sometimes, I dont think that extra wear and tear will kill it. Do worry about the condensation that forms when it warms and cools though

My pc is in my bedroom and has bright red LEDs in it, and as cool as they are, I'd prefer to sleep in the dark tyvm
