Oh I remember PC Golf from LGR's series on Keypunch Software, titled as Par 4.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 месяцев назад
Yep! Keypunch had a habit of renaming everything and removing author info but this game just didn't seem to have author info in the first place...? Also, LGR moment in question: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ct6G4nGtGoY.html

I recall playing PC Golf quite a bit way back in the day, I believe it was part of the FriendlyWare PC Introductory Set.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 месяцев назад
Mmm! That's a good catch because whoever made that FriendlyWare menu system clearly also made the PC Golf interface; the styles are IDENTICAL! :O

Man, even by the late 80s, there were golf games with pseudo-3D displays and standard swing gauges. Early PC gaming was poverty central. God bless id, Apogee, and Epic for saving us from the dark ages.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 месяцев назад
Part of the reason we remember Id, Apogee, and Epic best is because they at least made an effort to keep their legacy going. For the most part and with only a handful of exceptions, they were NOT the companies pushing DOS gaming technology forward, but the companies which were such as Accolade and EA had no interest in keeping the legacy of their games alive; to them it was always about money, while others like Access would end up getting bought up by competitors who then failed to make a good effort at keeping those legacies going. :/

My first DOS golf game was Caddiehack Golf from 1994, was nice to have polygons by then.

Heck yeah Caddiehack is awesome! It'd be neat to see Kris tackle that one, I love its graphical style.

Caddiehack is amazing! I played a ton of the shareware version back in the 90s off of a great compilation CD. I gotta find a registered version now!

@@Pixelmusement Well, given the limitations of technology, I don't think golf games really changed much until SVGA came along.

@@XanthinZarda Maybe not with the core mechanic of how to set swing power and aiming, but there's definite aesthetic differences between all of them and one look at screenshots of Caddiehack immediately made me think Mean 18. :B

Thanks for covering this. I was recently trying to remember (and find online) the ASCII golf game I played regularly in the 80s, with no luck. PC Golf, was it, played it on the PCjr without problems. I seem to recall the version I had came with other ASCII based games. Maybe a collection with other games similar to blackjack and hangman. Thanks again.

There is a basic file for PC Golf floating around as well. For example, in "Carousel by ALDE Publishing" (Internet Archive). There's a bunch of garbage embedded in it for some reason, so I'm not sure if this was a decompile or some sort of edit protection or something. What is interesting is that it's dated 1982, with an author of "A.Vanchura". A quick search for the author didn't turn up anything relevant, but the date's a little more interesting, as that's the year before the "FriendlyWare PC Introductory Set" was published. Not sure if this was because it takes time to write software, or if there's something weirder going on.

I know for sure that PC Golf is written in BASIC, because we had a floppy disk filled with them when I was a kid, and that was one of the games - and one I played a lot. I never looked into how it was made, unfortunately, and the disk is definitely lost to time.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 6 месяцев назад
That almost makes me wonder if perhaps it was a magazine game; One of those games included strictly as BASIC code in a magazine which the reader would then have to type in themselves? Would certainly explain the lack of authorship... :o
@MikoKisai
@MikoKisai 6 месяцев назад
@@Pixelmusement A bit of googling suggests it's an enhanced version of a golf game found in one of David Ahl's BASIC books. The text mode graphics don't seem to be in the book version I found, and Perfect Player isn't listed as an option, but there may have been a later book that did contain it specifically for PC BASIC? It definitely seems like that's the OG version.

I remember writing a very similar game in Turbo Pascal as a kid, inspired by NES Golf (the blackbox one). Also used ASCII for graphics. Didn't know that a similar game already existed.

I will say, I rather like the way that PC Pro Golf depicts its trees--in terms of all of sprite, placement, and use of colour (at least in the palette shown here). ^_^

To be fair, I didn't own a boxed copy in 1990. Instead, it was shovelwared onto a CD-ROM of other games as a pack-in for the (Vendex) HeadStart LX-CD, a Dutch 8088-1 IBM compatible. I miss that machine.

I see PC Pro-Golf is listed as shareware. What are the odds that there never was a full version and only a demo. I bet things like happened during the shareware days. My first golf game was the first DOS PGA Tour.
@Pixelmusement

Oh, I'm 99% certain there was a proper registered version of PC Pro-Golf. The documentation has proper registration details and pricing in place, where to send stuff, a proper registration form, allows you to select which course you'd like included free with the registration, and chances are the course editor mentioned is the same tool used to make the game's built-in courses. There's not enough warning signs to suggest it was an unfinished product, especially given some of the file dates and everything alluding to MUCH earlier versions, as well as a "course converter" I didn't mention which was needed to convert existing courses for earlier versions into the format recognized by the later version! :B

The oval-shaped character choice for the ball is just incomprehensible level of lacking care. There are at least two reasonably round ones in CGA font: lower-case o and 0x09.
