How do they test on a sigma? Are these real gold?

There is no way that 1851 $5.00 is an AU-50. The details just aren’t there

Yes, I agree. The problem is that the grading companies continue to insist on a subjective standard for many coins which takes into account the preponderance of weak strikes on an issue. I wish the companies would hold to the same objective standards. If a coin grades VF overall (because of weak strike), so be it. They play this game in silver dollars a lot. Presumably this is a compromise that serves collectors who want to obtain high grades in everything, even where the high grades are non-existent.

It's comforting to know they haven't been able to counterfeit a Ben- he's just too real and detailed.

Are these gold coins known as contemporary counterfeit's? That is they were made in the day to fool merchants rather than today which fool collectors? Are these made from gold?

Thanks for the detailed info. Looks like this book is a must have $20 investment. I bought an 1851 $1 gold coin from a reputable dealer that likewise came back from PCGS "Counterfeit - False Dies". Luckily the dealer not only gave me back my money, even though it was 4 months later, they also threw in an extra $30 to pay for my grading fee. Before that 1851, I never knew thought that someone would go to the trouble to counterfeit such a small denomination coin, and in a common date/mint.

Thanks Ben. Great video. This is why I will continue to say that I would rather buy a details coin than a raw coin . Atleast I no the details coin is REAL and not a FAKE and be out my money . The stigma around details coins is crazy . The coin still is what it is and has made it all this time .

Are these counterfeits contemporary with when the genuine coins were being minted and circulated? Or are they more recent counterfeits? Also, I assume they are not genuine gold either, though you didn’t say. In that case, couldn’t they have been tested prior to submitting for grading?
@josefigueroa3930
@josefigueroa3930 Год назад
Im sure they are gold no way they can look that good and not be gold another metal cannot match up that good to a real gold coin

@mjanovec
@mjanovec Год назад
@@creativity.studio4967 So if real gold was used, but they weren’t faking key dates, that suggests these were contemporary fakes. And it also suggests the face value of the coin exceeded the value of the metal, to the point that made them worth faking. Is that correct?
@EmptyWilbur
@EmptyWilbur Год назад
Those definitely would have fool me. So what percentage of the counterfeits are gold and not gold? I imagine the weights wouldn't be right.
@Jinxster-lo1uy
@Jinxster-lo1uy Год назад
Very curious about gold content and weight also. I thought counterfeiters wouldn’t waste real gold to make their ‘planchet’? Do the authenticators use XRF type machines for metal content?

Always remember that PCGS, NGC are not the true authority on coins, they have both wrongly called real coins fake. There are die varieties, errors and special strikes the mint made that were not recorded so always keep these coins that have been labled as counterfeits because they could be worth more then you could imagine, the 1913 liberty head nickel was originally thought a counterfeit but was found to be real, I've had a few coins that were like that also.

At the beginning of Covid...I had 2500 to invest in coins with to get my first five $5 Gold Indian coins raw....I got three of the Israeli counterfits from two different coin shop locations and I never found out if everything was on the up and up or not but the conversation about the Israeli Jewelers from the 1960s would make a good video...got my money back because gold went up and 14-16karat was thankfully worth a little bit more...If you don't know anything about what I have just said it's fascinating. It contrinuted to Nixon taking the US off of the Gold Standard in 1971 a little bit. Had to! ;) Secondly, in your video, that first $1 fake had some serious doubling on the "1" on the Reverse!

China has been putting counterfeit U.S. coins in counterfeit PCGS and NGC slabs on the market that are so good it's hard to tell. When you look up the coin with the serial number it will be on the websites. Older counterfeit gold coins were sometimes made for jewelry and you can see where they were mounted in a bezel, if you look close enough.

Scary and helpful. I wonder how many have passed through our shops unknowingly? Gonna start looking a lot more closely. Maybe even paying melt only for raw that can pass Sigma, and normal % of greysheet for slabbed only. Seen fake slabs too, but they're easy to spot.... for now anyway....

Hi Ben, Are these real gold? Are they meant to be high grade? because in circulation a bit, you may not to be able to spot some of those markers. When were they made? Was it the actual date? or later. Lots of other questions, maybe do a follow up on these topics. And do they have any numismatic value? I know the Omega doubles are kind of collectable.
